The saxophone (often referred to colloquially as the sax) is a type of single-reed woodwind instrument with a conical body, usually made of brass. As with all single-reed instruments, sound is produced when a reed on a mouthpiece vibrates to produce a sound wave inside the instrument's body. The pitch is controlled by opening and closing holes in the body to change the effective length of the tube. The holes are closed by leather pads attached to keys operated by the player.

The saxophone is used in a wide range of musical styles, including classical music (such as concert bands, chamber music, solo repertoire, and occasionally orchestras), military bands, marching bands, jazz , and contemporary music. The saxophone is also used as a solo and melody instrument or as a member of a horn section in some styles of rock and roll and popular music.

The saxophone was invented by the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax in the early 1840s and was patented on 28 June 1846. Sax invented two groups of seven instruments each—one group contained instruments in C and F, and the other group contained instruments in B♭ and E♭.

The modern saxophone family consists entirely of B♭ and E♭ instruments. The saxophones in widest use are the B♭ soprano, E♭ alto, B♭ tenor, and E♭ baritone. The E♭ sopranino and B♭ bass saxophone are typically used in larger saxophone choir settings, when available.

Today we have a sunny start, so I'm hoping to have a good session in my garden. DH has men's breakfast this morning, and I m not sure what's happening for him after that. He has announced he plans to make.moussaka for supper and also to visit the Beer Engine this afternoon, so I'm not sure in what order things will happen!

Thanks for the start, kittykatt. It seems I've missed a very musical week. We are weather twins again. I hope your garden has enjoyed having rain recently and now sunshine ? We're finally having a few tomatoes and there may be a handful of green beans after all.

The week was long and extra-busy with both boys going back to school.
DS10 is entering the collège, the secondary school in France for kids 11-14yo, which means he has a different teacher for every subject, he has found some of the kids from last year (and doesn't get on better with them than at the end of last schoolyear), and more than half are kids from other schools, who know each other : difficult for him to get in touch with new kids.
Each night this week, we had to help him make his school bag with the right books / notebooks for the next day, and I did the emotional support by listening about his friendhship difficulties, giving a few tips and things to try, that he may or not follow.
DS8 has a teacher he had 2 years go, who is also a friendly lady neighbour, and has "no friend" - at the end of last schoolyear he had decided he didn't need any. On 1st September he realised, before entering his nes classroom, that his brother wouldn't be in the same school anymore, and wondered aloud "who am I going to play with during breaks?" I hadn't realised he was so dependent from his brother. Well, at 8yo it's still easy to make friends again with kids he had fights with. I hope.

I have a long list of too-dos for the weekend, including washing clothes, a weekly grocery pick up this afternoon, an empty fridge to deal with for lunch (there were no availabel spots for the grocery pickup in the morning).
We will to to the local clubs fair, a yearly thing, hoping to enrol our kids to some sport or other club for the school year. It's too late for swimming lessons and music lessons already, but there are other clubs. Or maybe we enrol DS10 to his athletics practice like last year on Saturday mornings (he doesn't really want to but may go nonetheless), and find something at the same time for DS8...

Good morning, FFB, you've had a busy week! I hope you find something to suit both the boys at the fair. if DS10 doesn't want to do athletics, maybe there's.something else he could try? I'm glad DS8 has a nice teacher this year. I'm sure the summer holidays are long enough for 8 year olds to forget about their previous differences from last term. A new school is always challenging, but it's also a fresh start for DS 10. Maybe he will find a friend (s) with one of the kids that previously went to a different school? I'm sure they're not * all* in close exclusive friendship groups, whatever his thoughts / initial impressions may be. But, of course, it's still concerning for you, as you want both your boys to be happy.

DH has left for men's breakfast, so I need to get moving. Ideally I would like to get downstairs tidy and hoovered while he is out and not underfoot! And I need the kitchen sink to fill the watering cans for the rose feed, so it would be good to get that done too.

Frenchie, those are some big changes! Sending good thoughts for DSolder! That was a huge change for DS back in the day (but he also changed schools, so on top of that, he didn't know anybody) and he needed tons of extra support. And DSyounger no longer having his brother around, well, now he will have more incentive to make new friends to play with!
kittykatt, how long is usually DH at the men's breakfast? Have fun in the garden!
helia, that injury / inflamnation sounds very painful! What's the prognosis, does it just need time and anti-inflammatory meds, or is there something more to be done about it?

I've treated myself to a slower morning, reading cooking magazine while having breakfast and coffee. We have some lovely weather, and it's the first proper weekend at home in probably a month, so I plan to enjoy it! I bought some bulbs - all kinds, so I will need to figure out where to plant them. Also, the House&Holidays plan is already well into the first week, and after the back to school shoppings and the kids getting their backpacks and pencilcases stocked, it's in sore need of attention!

The Holiday thread is stickied safe and sound. I'm relieved and befuddled. Yesterday when LadyM chatted about odd things happening on the board, I thought, well, yes, it's not new to hear that. But then yesterday afternoon/evening, I was rubbing my eyes, coming back to the Fun and Games listing and looking again and again for what should have been a rather obvious thread name, calling HRH over to examine, lol. I even had a message in to Twins' Mom to ask her to check behind me - where had it gone. I absentmindedly said, "Am I crazy?", which prompted HRH to answer, "Now that is a completely different question." But he couldn't see it there, either. This morning he offers us his usual explanation for such things: "It's a computer. We can expect the same thing to happen every single time - or not."

helia, thinking of you with this pain and hoping it is much better soon.

FrenchFlybebe, best wishes to your boys as they have changes in school. Yes, at that age children move back into friendship status easily. We have 3 grandchildren starting new schools this year. With the younger 2, I hear the stories and they are mostly positive. I need to check on our faraway student, too, but I hear he is thrilled with new freedoms.

LOL at HRH, Harriet! You're not crazy at all! I think I noticed the holiday thread in an odd place at one point. Thank you for taking care of it. I'm not ready to look at it yet. The girls are still here for 6.5 weeks. Then, I can turn my attention to the holidays.

After I called PT yesterday to schedule a bunch of appointments - starting in October , I think I'm starting to feel a little less painful. But I need to remember that I always feel better in the morning. I probably should take more NSAIDs during the day. That would probably help later in the day when I start to feel uncomfortable.

Skippable: Dh and I had a big fight/ discussion last night. He's not happy I said "yes" to teaching a class next session, starting next week - mainly because we plan to travel with the girls and because it means I can't pick them up MWF. He's also worried about aggravating my bursitis. I think it will be OK: I've requested the downstairs classroom so I don't have to go up and down more stairs. Dh said he might be available to do some of the Friday pick ups. I've already told AC that we will travel, and she said it's easier to find subs than to find someone to teach this class. Also, I've spoken to the girls + dsil (SP's mom) and no one seems to care if the girls have to find another way home. They never expected us to drive them to and from school every day. I think there's a city bus. Or they can walk - 45 minutes, probably. But they're German. And young - 16 years old. LOL! (Used to walking according to the stereotype.) OR they can wait at school for an hour, do homework in the library or something - and then I can pick them up.

We're going to talk more about this today. I feel like dh's stress at work - deadline on Wednesday and still waiting to hear back about his book - is coloring this. I think HE'S quite stressed. Also, it feels like with the girls here, he wants me to change my schedule to take care of them more while he will live his life as usual as much as possible. Granted, his job is stressful and some things can't be tweaked as he's dealing with institutions and organizations in some cases, but I already gave up 20 years to stay home with our children, and I really enjoy my job now. I think we'll figure it out.

Today: I need to do laundry (with the help of dh), make a WF run, maybe experiment with baking bread. I might go to the dog park with dd28 - not sure. I can't walk too far but a little walking would be good. CG1 is tonight, and I haven't decided what to bring yet. Also, I need to do more payroll: get the S8 vocab lists up and work on the book chapter + PD slides.
