Wow, with all the discussion about heat, maybe I had better check our forecast. And I did, and WHOA!!! This may be bad. They are using the symbol that is vertical waves of heat for both Friday and Sunday, which is really a serious one. They almost never use that symbol. Tomorrow and Saturday both have highs of "only" 96. (Fri is 103, btw) What will I do for the hens... ...

harriet, that is a serious concern of mine - what to do for the hens. Even if we don't reach the predicted highs, it will still be hot here. They do have some shade and always have water. What about letting them out to dig troughs in the dirt? it might be cooler for them to lie in the dirt than on the grass? The major downside is that I have to be out with them when they're out of the coop; it's not safe otherwise. I think you are generally hotter than us -- what do you do for your hot hens?

We are lucky when we have a high like tomorrow of over 100 it only lasts a day. But to add insult to injury it is going to be an air quality day.

Almost too tired to even post but I have gotten through today and don't have to go to work tomorrow! Happy dance!

Got home a little past 8 p.m. and just now CUOP - dh isn't home yet but I may be asleep by the time he gets here.

I think I've told the story of dropping stuff off at Goodwill, to find, a day or so later, that one bag was video games, cables, etc. that ds had left in my car, and which belonged to Z. I made a trip to the Goodwill about 40 miles up the road to retrieve some stuff, but some was gone forever. (Moral of the story is don't leave your stuff in Mom's car.

Harriet and Helia - when we had chickens in SD (back in the dark ages) we would put a fan in the chicken house on hot days. Also make sure their water is cold - ice works good - and give them lots of room to move away from one another.

If you are really worried - you could get a patio mister - sold at home improvement stores. You hook it up to a hose and it sends a fine spray of water out that helps cool. Not sure how they would work in more humid areas but lots of people have one out in AZ. The big dairy near our old lot had fans with misters on them and the cows would line up in line with them to keep cool.

I forgot to tell you we are going to the ballet tomorrow. Dniece owns a dance studio and it is the recital for the summer camp.

This has been on my mind, helia.

Up until now, we have put ice cubes from the fridge in the drinking water several times through the afternoon. I want to try two new ideas from Backyard Poultry. One is to freeze water in an ice cream container (or somehow create a frozen block of ice) and place the frozen block into the waterer as you fill it, to keep the water cold for hours. The other is to fill large softdrink bottles with the lid on, freeze and place near where the hens sit. That tip is from North Queensland, where a lady says her "chooks" will sit next to the bottle and it will help keep them cool. For either tip, I think noon or 1:00 p.m. would be the time to bring the hens the help. (My hens hate shiny plastic... maybe a milk container, I'm thinking... ...)

As a matter of fact, HRH just walked past me and said, "Why are we freezing a bowl of water?" (I'm trying a rectangular Glad-ware container because I haven't bought any ice cream lately!) I told him, and he says, "I like it."

They will love to dig and get down to cooler earth, yes. I don't see how that is as much help as other things but they are the experts I guess. If there is a way you can offer new shade, additional shade, it always helps.

Same lady from North Queensland says if a hen ever actually collapses from heat, she can be saved by placing her in a bucket/tub of tepid water and splashing it under her wings, then setting her in a shady place protected from wind.

I'm blowing in the wind again... This time the dust wall is 3000 ft wish there was some rain behind it. That would settle the dust a bit.

Dh just called and they are about 800 miles from home. They plan to ride 400 miles tomorrow and then get up early again on Friday and head for home. They are now back in the hot weather after riding in cooler weather in Canada.

Happy Birthday Helia

My Wednesday woops was not walking dog in any dryer spatches of a mostly miserable wet day.
My 2nd woops was reading something late, turning off light at 2.30 - still too wired to sleep.
Todays woops was dog waking me at 7.15 to go outside. there was a tiny break in the weather - just let him out door on running lead - by the time I was ready to walk him it was raining again. I ended up back to bed for a little - then walking at 9 in another break in the weather. We got another walk in this afternoon.

I have been busy since 9am and it shows. Need a couple of regular nights sleep as Sat is a long tiring day. Tomorrow - I need finish the reading for saturday. at least 2 hours I think - guessing from how many pages I did last night..
