9/11

Eleven years ago today, we were living 40 miles from Boston. DD had just started 9th grade and DS was in 7th grade. I had gone back to bed that morning after getting them off to school. I was grieving as my DF had passed away 6 months earlier. DH called me on the phone to say that a plane had crashed into World Trade Center. Got up and watched the Today Show and saw the second plane hit. Soon my DM was calling from NC saying that she heard Camp David was hit by a plane (that was not true). I told her that the President was in FL, so he was safe. That was such a beautiful day in the northeast. Looking at the clear, blue sky that day, it was hard to believe these things were happening. Watched TV in horror as I learned of the other 2 plane crashes.

I started filling containers with water, since we were on a well system, and if power went off would have no water. After a few days, had to stop watching all the sad news. It felt like we would never laugh again and I wondered how TV could ever go back to all the usual silliness. Finally, I remember renting a movie, so we could all laugh together. DH and I made sure both kids had contact info for our relatives in their backpacks as they went off to school each day. We were concerned that we'd all get separated if there was an evacuation or some other kind of attack. I remember DH had a plan that we would head to Canada if we needed to get out of the northeast (us and a gazillion other people).

So that is my story. Lilac, I think I will go hang out our flag, too.

I was home that gorgeous day too, babysitting dgs (then almost 2). Dgirlfriend called and asked if I was watching TV -"what channel?" Answer: "ANY channel". Turned from cartoons dgs was watching and then was horrified for quite some time. Remember trying to reach dh as he was working on constructing the paddle wheel for Lake Ontario. Couldn't reach him for hours as he was in the belly of the boat. So he had no idea for hours. I remember all the preparations we all made for just in case. I remember the candlelight vigil we had along our section of road. How neighbors reached out to neighbors and the closeness that came of all that. I remember the impromptu prayer services and the local people I knew were in the Towers. Our flags are already out and the one on our berm is proudly flying and waving in the breeze.

I do remember some time later being in my kitchen and thinking, "what's that sound?" Suddenly realized that it was a plane going over once again. Ran out just to see and be glad that sound was out there (again). We were in a landing pattern for the nearby airport.

I will NEVER forget.

I can't listen to the news today about 9/11, to hard, but pray for the families and the individuals.

Belated happy birthday to Kathryn!

So nice to see that MysteryWoman stopped by yesterday.

I tried to get here early yesterday, but when I peeked in things were going along tickityboo and I wanted to get laundry started before posting.

Then I received an email in the morning about the death of someone in my sewing group. I did not consider her a close friend, but she had been an active member in the group for several years. Communications to various group members kept me busy all day. I lost track of coming back here and didn't realize that the GoDaddy sites were under attack in the afternoon. Although I do remember trying to click in and getting an error message, I just thought the site was especially busy at the moment.

Must get caught up with chores today, that makes it an Apron Day!!
* I've been waiting for the bank to open so I can make an appointment for tomorrow to add my signature to the accounts for Friends of the Library.
* Dishes are soaking.
* Washer & dryer are doing their things.
* Put dry pinto beans in water, by 3 they will have a long enough soak that I can start cooking them and make chili for supper. Good thing I inspected them, found a few rocks in the bag.
* Also realized that I'm drinking my coffee hot this morning. I've been drinking it iced all summer, even first thing in the morning.
* Nutella on toast for breakfast, yummy perfect with hot coffee!

* Get recycle bin from the garage & fill it
* Empty all small trash cans from around the house
* Make appointment at bank for tomorrow morning
* Cook pinto beans and then cook chili
* Something from the sewing list
* Go to post office
* Declutter enough paper to top off the recycle bin

Where shall I start? It was great to see Mystery posting last night and I truly hope she gets back today to give us an update.

Kathryn, I learned of Indiana's passing through an email from MT - I did not receive the one you sent out. And I had given Indiana my present email address back in - I think - November. I know i was posting at the time I moved out here and that is when my email changed. Anyway, it does sound like quite a job ahead of you to get everybody caught up. We all appreciate what you and the other moderators are doing.

On 9/11 I and two friends who were also neighbors were preparing to leave for a luncheon. That was early but two of us had responsibilities in preparing for it so we left long before lunch time. It was another's turn to drive so I was watching for her to arrive when the phone rang. It was ds/NC and he said, "Mom, turn on the TV. Click. Of course I did exactly that and like all of you was horrified at what I saw. My concern was heightened by the fact that I did not know whether my dd/NYC's office was near the site of the attack. Blessedly, she called before I had to leave to tell me she was fine, that her office was not close to the inferno. Meanwhile, ds/here and his oldest ds were moose hunting in the far northern reaches of Ontario and didn't know anything about it till they returned to civilization on the following Friday. We were concerned that they might not be able to get a flight back here but they did.

So that is my 9/11 initial experience. I'm sure you all have vivid memories of that day. Mine are even more vivid- and poignant - because of dd/NYC's experiences after it happened.

YES! I echo the enthusiasm for seeing Mystery here yesterday!! I've missed you and would love to hear about your busy household any time.

a.m. routine is done except for finishing the kitchen. Our glass glasses often get tiny bits of food on them, so I rinse them off while unloading the dw. This takes more time, but the roughness from the food particles bothers me. You can't even see it some of the time. But I can feel it.

I have also stripped MBR bed, including mattress pad, and have that load going.

9/11 happened on a beautiful Tuesday, much like today. I heard about it as I was leaving CBS (Comm. Bible Study). I had just finished with the kids' class I was teaching and the children's director mentioned it to me as I was handing her paperwork, but she didn't know details and was non-alarmist and I had no idea the gravity of the situation until much later. I had dd3(!) with me, while ds7 and dd5 were at school. I think the school sent an email about kids leaving/not leaving school - or maybe they were in lock down that day? That was my first clue this was something truly serious. I spent some time watching TV, maybe the next day? I'm not sure b/c I didn't let the kids watch it. But I remember making a decision at some point to turn the TV off. For me, the coverage was not healthy or helpful. We didn't (and still don't) watch much TV anyway. We had just moved here about 2 weeks earlier, maybe Aug. 27, so we were brand new to the community, no real friends yet, we hadn't sold our house in TX yet so owned 2 houses in 2 states, and dh was already hyper-stressed about his job w/ 2 year tenure clock. It was a hard time in general, looking back on it. Amazingly, we got an offer on our house in TX 9/12. That bit of good news, tiny in the larger context of all that was going on in this country and internationally, was a God breeze when we really needed one.

Thank you for the kind words, Dee! I'm glad to be back and notice my habits here are healthier. I think I've grown. Who wouldn't when in contact with such wise caring women?

Off to finish the kitchen.

Booksaver--We're having chili tonight, too!

Twins--I remember the day Kennedy was shot. I was at day care, which was "nursery school" in those days--was 5 years old. We woke up from our naptime and our cartoons were not on and all the teachers were crying. Got home and DM was crying. I always was interested in Caroline since we are the same age.

Fall is in the air! Love this time of year...

Mystery was here and I missed it???!!!! Drat! Hope she visits us again real soon!

Here, we are all in absolute shock! DDIL#1 texted me about half hour ago from court that the man who hit/killed our dneighbor & was indicted on charges for dwi/dwu for drugs and alcohol. was found NOT GUILTY by the judge on all charges. Our dfriend has to be beside herself today! Can't understand it -sure it'll be on the noon news -will be watching. DH just came in and had spoken with one of Jack's dsons. He said the judge said, "None of the EMT's or sherrif's on scene had testified that the driver APPEARED impaired". What?!!! When all the blood tests, etc said he was??? Sorry to vent this here, but I am so angry right now. Guess what judge is not getting our vote when he's up for Federal Judgeship?
