Today is the 30th anniversary of the emoticon. : - )

It was first used electronically by Professor Scott Fahlman 30 years ago today. He posted it in an electronic message to a computer-science department bulletin board at Carnegie Mellon University. He also suggested the use of : - ( if something wasn't funny. He said, "read it sideways."

On our board now, we have to put spaces between the characters of an emoticon to see it that way, or it will pop up as a "smilie". Just a bit of trivia.

ellyphant, "History is written by the victors." is a quote usually attributed to Winston Churchill and HRH mentions it often. Oh, and I posted to you about "Clean Sweep" in Decluttered Home.

HRH is home this a.m. getting ready to take my ddad to the barber appt by 10.

Neither of us could sleep well for various reasons and were back up so late we even had hot chocolate watching the president on Letterman, which we didn't know was coming on. We just can't stay up that late and expect to manage a 5:50 alarm.

He and I have already dissected the regional newspaper. Lots of stuff to discuss today. We have an especially tragic murder on the front page.

While he is away with my ddad I could try to nap, but I feel guilty since he can't! lol

Glad you got a good rest, scattered, (pleased to "meet" you, BTW -- don't know if I said that already) and I hope Lynlee gets a good rest as well. Hoping, too, that you find some energy, Harriet, and that you and HRH get better rest tonight!

Never did get back here last night -- lots of "ooh, shiny!" (Hmm... trouble focusing... maybe I am going into a mood episode.) I did, however, find a cell carrier that might work for me. Can't sign up yet, though -- no space on my credit card. I really need to have a sit-down with DH (probably several sit-downs) regarding our finances. He's been handling them the past several years now (it didn't work to have me handling them when I was depressed and not doing anything, including paying the bills), and he doesn't realize, I don't think, how some of the things he does trash my credit rating. His guiding force is, "pay off the things with the highest interest rate first," so he's been paying huge chunks off his debt and leaving my lone credit card at about 90% of its limit, which is easy to go over now that I need to fill the gas tank on the van weekly rather than monthly -- with gas prices what they are now, each fill-up is easily $80. And he takes forever to pay medical bills b/c they don't charge interest... they just send them to collections, and it's usually my name on the medical bills, even though he's the one with the insurance, b/c not only do I use more medical services than he does, what with my illness, but I'm generally the one who takes the girls to their appointments and signs the paperwork. Don't know whether to scream or sigh.

Had time to post b/c I had actually reached the point where I could do virtually nothing on my l**t -- couldn't clean the bathroom b/c DD was still in it, and it was close enough to her pick-up time that I didn't want to go downstairs & start a load of wash in case DD needed a fire lit under her. OK, I could have done stuff in the rest of the house, but I'd rather post here!

DD has been picked up, and I'm going to go up and use/clean the bathroom then head to the girls' old school to meet with the librarian there.

Good morning! I am up, s2socks, and sipping my tea. It is chilly here, 42 at the moment. Dh went for a run; I declined, to his disappointment. I'll go later in the day when it is a little warmer and I have my teaching more under control. I know, eventually, 42 will be a warm temp for jogging, but not today first thing in the morning.

Last night, dh went over my hand out and notes for my teaching and basically ripped it apart - which is what I had wanted/needed. However, that means I need to restructure the entire thing today.

Book club last night was very enjoyable, even though I hadn't finished the book. It didn't matter. It was just fun to hang out with these friends, some closer some newer.

Scale said I am down 2 pounds since Friday, so that is good news! I'm not officially overweight, but I'm 5'7" and do prefer to be closer to 140 than 150. Also, I'm looking toward that 5K on Oct. 21. . . .

I enjoy your posts, Mystery!
Hope Harriet can fit in a nap.
Hello to others - I need to go, not trying to leave you out.

5x5
1. gather and wash towels
2. hand out revamped
3. teaching notes revamped
4. jog
5. confirm child care for leaders' meeting after moms group tomorrow

I'll have dh look at my teaching tonight and then practice the speaking parts over which I do have control.

Good morning, villagers ~
Harriet ~ Nap! Nap any and every chance you get! :)

I was wide awake at 4:30. What the what? :? 4 hours sleep is not nearly enough.

I knew I could nap later this morning, so I've been up writing follow-up Emails from the sewing group board meeting last night. I have 1 more high-priority task to do before I can go back to sleep.

Today's plan, in this order:
1. Proofread sewing group newsletter, write 1 more short article, and send corrections to editor.
2. NAP!
3. 1 load laundry
4. Dishes
5. Go to bank for library group
6. Lunch at McD's (near the bank), pick up mail on the way home
7. ??? Probably some sort of cleaning in the kitchen
8. Girls Night Out = supper with my mom, 2 sisters, maybe also the 3rd sister, and aunt. DH has to work too late, but he will get take-out fried chicken which he loves.

I've been working on sewing group business several hours every day since Friday. Other than the newsletter, which will go back & forth a few more times for proofreading, I should be able to take a break from that job for a week. It's time to get back to fun sewing!

Good Morning.

It was downright cold in this tin can this morning. I lit the heater at 5:30 and then snuggled under the covers until 6:30. I have now cut my hair, S2BF and got my bag ready for the day. I have 2 seminars to monitor today - 1 at 11:15 and 1 at 3:00. So I have an easy day. DH only had one at 8:15 this morning.

I want to go over early as some friends of ours drove in from CA yesterday. He had faked his blog from Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to make people think he was still in CA but they were hitting the road to the tune of 400 miles a day to get here. (That's a lot of miles per day for a MH)

Hugs to all - sorry I can't post to each of you. Gotta get some breakfast with my meds.

Good Morning!

For the 2nd day in a row, I overslept 2 hours! Arghhh! For several years, I've fallen to sleep listening to podcast of D Ramsey show. I guess my brain is trained to shut down and sleep when I hear it. Usually I fall asleep before the theme song (Baker Street) is finished playing. The podcast last about 30 minutes then shuts itself off. What changed? A couple days ago I found D Ramsey show on I heart radio. So instead of paying $80 a year to listen to ad free podcast, I decided to listen to the show for free. Simple decision. EXCEPT the radio show never turns off! So I just keep sleeping....and sleeping.....until the alarm to get LO ready for school comes on. Which means I haven't done 2 hours worth of AM cards. it is a SCRAMBLE to get him out the door. All because I found that free radio show............. There are several choices for an easy fix. Either find an app to turn radio show off after 30 minutes.....or set an alarm to wake me up.......or return to listening to podcast.

Today is the easy day of this week. The only activities on the schedule is pictures at school (easy to prepare a boy that has short hair) and church. DH will go to church alone because it is almost 9pm when we get home. That would get LO to bed too late.

3D status -
** Dishes - needs a few minutes attention
** Duds - washer going....dryer going
** Dinner - don't have a clue.

OKay, I totally understand your whole sleeping to the radio thing. Up until now, ds was the only other person in the world that I knew who needed it. For us it has to be talking not music so ds listens to comedy routines. I listen to the audio version of the Economist. You may recall the trouble I had when my new mp3 player (which I bought on an emergency basis in Darwin since my other one broke on a cruise) didn't have a sleep timer on it. It would shut off after the last article so I had to listen to the Economist from the last few articles to the end, then delete the articles I had been awake for and listen to the 'new' last few articles the next night. I'm thrilled to have a sleep timer once more!

I am joining the "poor sleep, woke late" group here this morning. Woke up at 9, but thought it was 10. Didn't get to sleep until sometime around 2 and work up again at 5:30. Poor dh didn't sleep well either because of my tossing and turning.

Today is a shower day again because we are adjusting our shower days (usually every second day) so I don't have to shower on Sundays or Tuesdays, the days I need to be out of the house early.

This Sunday we won't go to church but to cheer ds on at the half marathon.

Today is wide open but I have phone calls and computer work to do as well as housework.

Good morning to the village. Beautiful morning here - 55 degrees and sunny. I wore a denim shirt over my t-shirt to walk the ddogs.

I slept in this morning until almost 7 since I didn't have to be anywhere this morning. I'm so glad to be home today. On the PODA:
-do proofreading on a temple booklet
-prep for board meeting tonight, should be a quiet meeting, reports only
-do some home keeping, I'm tired of half emptied boxes and stuff everywhere!
-errands, grocery, cleaners, what else?

I need to get started on proofing - meant to do last night and completely forgot. This is due back to printer today and we have had enough issues already.

We have an offer on the old house - not the best offer but a good enough for a counter to let them know we're ready to sell.
