Elizabeth - ugh I hate when a "quick" stop becomes a LONG stop!

Dinner is done, DS13's papers are signed, Bills are scheduled to be paid when paycheck hits the bank (get my pay-stub 2-3 days before pay day), need to do homework although I have a bad case of I DONWANNA!!! Gonna take a few minutes to rest then need to get on it.

Whoa! So much going on here since last time I posted -- too much to CUOP on it all!

(((Elizabeth))) Bureaucracy and common sense rarely speak to one another.

Well, my DH isn't an inventive one (though he's way better than I am at making dinner out of "spare parts," as it were), but he did get credited by one of his former statistics students who went on to design a statistical method used in archaeology. That's gotta count for something!

First job? Light assembly work -- my DM worked for a company that put together valve subassemblies and got me a summer job there after my junior year of HS. I worked there every summer but one till I finished college -- the one summer, they had no work, so I temped. Much better $ than my friends who were working at Mickey D's, but they were able to go to the beach during the day while I was working. Needed that $, though -- couldn't register for my senior year, for example, till I could pay off the last of my junior year with the $ I'd made during the summer. (I had plenty of scholarship and grant money, but the cost/year nearly doubled while I was in college.) I designed something of a sort during one of those summers -- once the company learned I was studying technical writing, they put me to work updating instructions for their repair kits. One of them had three different templates depending on which size valve you were repairing, but the instructions were the same for each. I combined the templates into one -- they were so tickled to be able to save 2/3 on printing. To me, it was no biggie -- I'd used plenty of multi-sized patterns when sewing!

Got that shopping done, gassed up, & got groceries put away just in time to pick up the kids. Once I got home, I finished laundry & made dinner. Found out which account I wanted to draw hockey $ & got those checks written.

Dinner eaten now; I'm actually at the rink now, waiting for the manager to arrive. I think it's time to turn around and head home so dd can get a bath before bed.

Manager didn't arrive, and rink connection didn't work, so now I'm home, so dd can get her shower.

Hello to everyone!

I'm sorry for being such a grouch this morning... the day turned out pretty good, after all. I was a little bit -- maybe 5 minutes -- late to school, but that wasn't really a problem. We are supposed to be there at least 15 minutes before the homeroom bell (7:30 -- hr starts @ 7:45). That gives us 15 minutes to sign in, unlock our classrooms, and "monitor" the halls before the bell. I still had time to chat w/dfriends in the hall & there were no students lined up waiting for me to unlock the door, so I was okay.

Dbro is arriving a week from Friday, while we will be gone, but he will be staying until Monday, so MAYBE he will get to see dgs before he leaves. DH says I must NOT commit HIM to anything b/c our Wed-Sat is going to be quite a whirlwind next week.

And * sigh * The car is back home, running fine, apparently... w/out brake work, but with front end alignment completed. I'm really a little suspicious of the "suggested" brake work, and I hate to be suspicious of this guy, b/c I do like him -- he's a former student and has always seemed like such a nice guy... but in dh's conversation with him, it became pretty obvious that the brake work was NOT a high priority item, and probably not even needed AT ALL.

All in all, it has not been a bad day, but I am pretty tired, and I really need to grade some papers tonight, since I did nothing but stare at dgs last night.

Oh -- my first job -- working in a local drug store/coffee shop during my last couple of years of high school. I loved it. It was kinda a hangout for a bunch of retired men, my granddaddy among them, and the owners were wonderful people. I learned a lot from them, and I treasured the opportunity to get to know a lot of those men in town. I really, really miss those kinds of businesses, you know, where everybody knows your name.

My first job was counter help in a dry cleaners, bagging clothes, taking care of customers, etc. Not exciting stuff. I've never invented anything unless you count cooking or sewing.

DH, on the other hand is always figuring out a way to do something differently. I've helped him weld a couple tools together or heat up and change the shape of a tool, etc. to fit a unique situation. He has a different way of connecting a few sets of bifold doors, involves changing the shape of fastener/stops that come standard...he calls it the ___DH____ way of doing doors...and I've asked what about a patent...but we just slog along.. maybe we coulda' been rich...

I'm impressed with what others have been doing!

My desk is cleaned up nicely, account reconciled (another one) some kitchen work done.

I'm the one waiting for results. Dr. didn't call again today. I hate to be a nag, but I'm losing patience with all this.

Dee, my gyno wants me on cit racal 1200 slow release (2 in the am) but my GF tells me to just get whatever calcium form that is and take it, spread out through the day. I need to research all the types of calcium, I do know the calcium carbonate we've been taking is not very well absorbed and basically junk. I'm going to switch to the better type and add some D3 and Magnesium.

Speaking of security Dd has a friend who's hubby works for FBI and can't talk about his work, said there is another agent living in the hts. and I've seen the car on my walks wondered about it I know where he lives. That house has been for sale for a year and a half or so.

H. had a day from hel-l today got lost out in the boonies with a load on the truck no cell service, the co. radio did not work and the places he stopped did not know the address either they gave him bad directions. He was not a happy camper when he got home. Dinner helped!

I'm back from the rest of my walk. I heard a tap tap tap like the knocking on a window looked up and it was dson's bosses kids hand waving at me out their window! That made me smile!

Obviously I missed a whole line of discussion. My first job was as a Bun Girl (put the toppings on hamburgers buns) for a couple who had a food truck (actually a converted bus) and stall at the Alaska State Fair. During the summer we would go to large auctions and events and then it was two weeks at the state fair. I started working for them (under the table) when I was 12-13, and have been working ever since. I had to or face extreme guilt at home... got love DMother because of that and having to take care of my younger sister so that my DMother could "Live" her life, I did not make DS19 get a job until after he graduated from HS. Some people say that I made a mistake, but at least my boys have been able to have a childhood.

I got my homework done and completed a 100 point extra credit quiz.

I'm now going to enjoy a s'mores and "Criminal Minds" and then it is off to bed.

This has been so interesting today that I was reading a lot of the items we've talked about to Mr. Guy and when I told him what Cowinkie said about Bendix he told me that when he was a very young working man he made vacuum tubes at Verian Associates in Palo Alto and they went on space shots. I don't think he ever mentioned that to Cowinkie and Sweetie when we have had these kind of discussions. (I find out something new about him all the time and we have been married almost 29 years! )

Harriet, I have thought many times that Mr. Guy and HRH would have alot to talk about. Several years ago when he bought his hotrod in Charlotte we thought we might fly back there to see it first and then we could meet for lunch. That didn't happen and I am sorry it didn't. There is nothing like meeting forum members in person. Cowinkie and I can attest to that!

My very first job was ironing for DMOM for 5 cents per item ironed. I got paid a nickel whether it was a handkerchief, tablecloth or DDad's boxers. (Why did he need his boxers ironed?) DMOM hated ironing, worked full-time, I was so excited to earn $$ and thought I was rich. My next job, starting around age 12, was baby-sitting in the neighborhood for money. I picked fir cones once and picked strawberries for several summers, as a kid and teen.

After high school as a nurse's aide and marriage, I worked a temp assignment for the state for 7 months. I was a homemaker, had kids, but helped out with the income, if DH got laid off from work, to work as a nurse's aide. Later, when the kids were in middle school, I worked part-time in a mall dept. store for 18 months. But DD started doing poorly in school, as well as DS and it just wasn't worth it to me and our family as a whole unit, for me to work outside the home. Later, I worked legislative session as a House Bill Clerk. It was temporary with very Good pay. After that, I stopped working. When I was an empty nester, in 2005, I took a correspondence children's writing course, to find out that I loved writing romantic stories for women instead. I started writing for magazines about age 54. I'm going on 8 years of doing it now, love it, and want to start writing mysteries, too. I get to stay home, work from home, work around health issues, and still contribute.

I am a homemaker first, I think, because I love my home, taking care of it, and it's a worthwhile job. You get exercise when you clean, you can pick your own work hours, work around DH's schedule, or non-schedule, and it's just a joy to be able to do both. It's nice to be home with a retired DH because we spend time together, but if he's in my hair, I just go into another room or the office. It's a sort of joke between him and me, if I need to iron something. He asks me if I still iron for a nickle or does inflation count now; say a quarter.

It's so interesting to hear about everyone's first jobs, to see where we've all journeyed and what we all do now.

Back home; girls are in bed. So should I be, but I want to go check on the non-dailies I wanted to get done today....

• figure out which account to tap for hockey fees & write check (I think it's going to be the one the girls' tuition used to be paid out of; I don't think we've adjusted the deposits to there, so there should be a surplus) Done!
• e-mail hockey manager to find out what time practice is; she did send a bunch of information in the e-mail that asked for the $, but practice times were not there. (Umm... actually, practice times were there; I just needed to open the attachment.)
• send out my own e-mails as manager of dd's team; we have our first preseason game on Saturday, and I will not be at tomorrow's practice b/c I have to take DD to hers. Hoping that as we get to know people on DD's team, we will find someone who lives close enough that I can send her to ride with them on Thursdays -- the only families I know on the team as of yet live :25 SW of the rink and :30 SE of the rink; we are :25 NNW of the rink. Need to e-mail the head of our local program as to when he needs paperwork from the players -- I suspect before Saturday's game, which is going to be difficult with me not being there tomorrow. Will have to send paperwork w/DH and hope he can get as much as possible, then hope to catch any stragglers before the game. Not even started....
• reply to e-mail from other carpool parent; he is scheduled for surgery soon and needs to make alternate arrangements -- as he wrote, "pain meds and driving don't mix," and I suspect his docs wouldn't want him driving soon after the surgery even if he weren't on narcotics Again, not started....
• should noodle on bulletin board for former school's library; tomorrow is my day to volunteer there Nope, not this one, either....

OK, no way am I staying up past midnight. But, before bed, I'd like to:
• check e-mail
• load (and remember to turn on!) the dishwasher
• fill the girls' milk thermoses for tomorrow's lunches (and make sure their ice packs are in the fridge)
• check tomorrow's calendar & weather forecast
• lay out tomorrow's clothes

If there's any additional time left before midnight, I'll try to get that e-mail started.
