WOW -- the pressure re: college acceptances. Oh my...
Our experience is sooo much different. As helia said, kids always know where each other is going, but in our little tiny town school (approx 600 students, grades 9-12) the HUGE majority of college-bound students are bound for state schools. Probably a majority go to the local community college and another large segment go to a small 4-year university nearby. (That was my experience, 2 years at comm. college, then transferred to "local" university. Those who really want the "big-time" college experience go to Alabama or Auburn, and then there are other smaller universities that the rest balance out themselves around. Kids may be wearing the sweatshirt of their chosen school, but my goodness, they've all been wearing Alabama or Auburn sweatshirts since kindergarten, anyway, LOL!!! You might have a full-ride 4-year scholarship to one of those schools, but the guy next to you could be the first person in his family to complete high school and your shirts would be the same.
On awards day, scholarship recipients are announced, and the school takes great pride in the number of scholarship offers our students receive, but I cannot even remember anyone even applying to an Ivy League school, so it's not that kind of pressure. We have had a fair share, over the years, of students who have gone to military academies and that's kind of a big deal, but not everyone is cut out for that sort of thing, so there's certainly no competition.
* whew *
My dson didn't really apply to anywhere except AU. He knew, pretty much from birth, b/c of family tradition, that would be where he would end up. He considered briefly applying to some schools nearer to Nashville, but pretty quickly nixed that idea, saying that a college degree would not really help him in his ultimate career goals and living in "music city" would just be a detraction from getting the degree in the meantime. He figured he could put off following his dream four more years and continue the family tradition, share football Saturdays and things with his dad, and be just as well off in the long run. And I guess he was right; time will tell.

Ooohhh,
Twins!!! That IS a sticky situation. I can just imagine the talk around the temple...
Goals... well... my goals for 2014 are the same as my goals for the last dozen new years that y'all have known me. I am really going to get on track w/my cards and zones and all that good stuff. I know -- I say this EVERY SINGLE YEAR and NOTHING ever changes. BUT -- for the first time, I am entering a new year w/out a very stressful 40-hour + weekly work schedule staring at me. In spite of sporadic babysitting demands and dmom's needs, AND travel the first 10 days of the new year, I do hope I can get myself together a little bit.
(((
Ivy))) I'm sure the lung congestion is nothing to play with. DH and I were just talking about that last night. He has had a few scary asthma attacks, and my dgmother had emphysema.
I'm ready to start my day now. Or take a nap. Could go either way.....
LOL...
Kathryn, I'm right there with you. WTG on the biscuits!
I'm kinda excited to see what happens with those hens,
Nancy!
Today's PODA (and ta-da's)
* Early phone call from our pastor, needed copy of adm council minutes. Luckily I knew right where those were and was able to make copies and take care of that right away. She came by and got them just a little while ago.
* Next phone call from dcousin out-of-state. I love to talk to him -- actually, ddad's first cousin, who is about dmom's age. He was checking on my first cousin who has cancer; couldn't get them on the phone.
[x] Exercise
[ ] s2s
[ ] funeral home visitation in next town -- stepson of the man who mows our yard; we don't know the deceased, but must go for the parents
[ ] hurry back to our town for ds/dh to sing at nursing home
* So far... no need for anti-nausea meds. Yesterday, while talking to dmom about Christmas plans, I sorta had a panic attack and I did take some medicine (Z ofran). Usually, if I can get my stomach to stop churning, I can deal with whatever is causing the anxiety. But while my stomach is churning and I'm having hot flashes and cold sweats and trembling... no way can I think about WHAT WAS I THINKING WHEN I INVITED THE THUNDERING HERD TO MY HOUSE???
