Off to do a few errands.
Have a good afternoon

Wait. What is "minimal assistance"?
The whole "Life expectancy can be predicted by ability to sit on the floor and get up with minimal assistance"

Got out on my bike! Biked less than 1 mile on the road and then round and round in the garage.

Our errand was to buy a new tire 'shelf' (it stacks the tires 2 over 2) which opened up about 3' of extra room across the front of the car. As well, the tires are now stored side-ways so only come into the space about 18" instead over 27". With the extra space, my bike fits in front of the car and it looks like I should be able to get it in and out on my own as well.

Our nifty driveway marker in wood that warns when the car is all the way into the spot (and might hit something) now needs to be remade but aside from that, the refit of the parking spot (second this week!) is done.

I rode my bike around while dh worked. It will be interesting to see what my knee is like tomorrow and Friday! I was (barely) able to swing myself onto the bike. Getting off, I can swing my leg over so mounting and dismounting is much better than when I started biking last year.

I have a chirping sound in my rear derailer and my back breaks are marginal so the bike needs a tune-up. But at least I can still ride. Will book a tune-up asap (last year it was a 5 week wait for them.)

Next up: clean the windows in the office.

Runkitty: first you must remember I was half asleep while listening to this but you are graded on a scale of 10, 5 points for down, 5 points for up. Time is not a factor. Each time you use your hands, a point is taken away.

Right now, from down to up, I roll on my tummy, up onto my knees, push up onto my feet and arms (sort-of a pathetic downward dog in yoga) and then walk my arms back towards my feet until I can stand up. The two arms would be two points off for sure and I suspect each time I use them (walking back) I'd lose more points. Ds tries to get me to walk forward with my feet but with my sore knee/leg it is easier to move back with my arms.

Oh, here's a description from a Prevention article. It is even worse than I thought!
The test is simple to grasp if not do: Just sit on the floor from a standing position without using your hands, arms, or knees to slow your descent. Then stand back up—without using your hands, arms, or knees to help boost you back up, if possible. (Hint: Crossing your legs on the way down and the way up seems to help, and loosely holding your arms out to your sides can help with balance.)
This is a better summary. The stats are scary. The link includes a video showing what they expect without a pretty lithe young thing (which was how the Prevention article was illustrated!)

Oy, Kathryn! This doesn't sound good. Will have to try later. I am getting into and out of ds's Honda Civic, which is obviously much lower than my Honda Pilot. Also, twice a day I am sitting on a very low stool next to Moses as he eats and then getting myself back up.

I got to grocery, my bank and cleaners earlier, then unloaded groceries, went to temple to sign cks and then met dh to look at cabinets. We are very dysfunctional about making decisions like this - one reason it hasn't happened yet.

Back home, I going to go stamp awhile. It's really been a pretty stressful day. Dh asked for three thank you cards for the staff at his office for Admin professionals day so I will see what I have, clean up some, and finish the card I started yesterday. I feel headachy and grumpy.

This is the SRT Sitting/Rising Test that dr Mercola challenged readers to try in his newsletter, January 2013, so the info Kathryn is citing from 2012 must be what he was quoting then. He showed the video but I was not wise enough then to watch video more than once and notice the numbers above the patients' heads, which I now see. He was very self-depreciating about his own tries, and said that even after being a dedicated exerciser for years (and he's a slim man), he had to use momentum to rock forward and up from seated to standing, without having points taken away, but was working on it. So, take that as a caution! I had tried it then (fitter then than now!) and the results for me were:

1) several silly tries for which I gave myself do-overs :)
2) getting down with a bump, so .5 points taken off
3) finally getting down without a bump
4) getting up with 2 points taken off many times (frustration)
5) getting up with 1 point taken off, finally
6) teaching it to dsonil, with a BIG bump while getting down
7) dsonil doing it perfectly, all on the first try :|
8) me never using that for a measure again!!!

So, advice: that mat underneath you as you go down is a necessity! LOL! Thicker is nicer! :D
Don't teach this to anyone else until you are great at it!
Don't give up just because your son in law is stronger than you!!! :| Of course he is! Duh.

I passed the test :-)

First time I made a 5. Second time a 4.5 because I warbled getting up ... :-)

WTG, RR!! Not surprised though.
I passed the test :-)
I can rarely pass up a challenge, so I tried it. Got a 4 down and a 4 up. I had to put my hand down both times because I don't trust my knees. :x I will keep practicing. Think I agree with Harriet's #8.
If this test inspires people to try to gain strength and flexibility, it is a good thing. If it scares them, not good at all.

My good news today was that I was able to fit into jeans I haven't worn in a long time. I love non-scale victories!!

I agree, no surprise that RamblinRose got the test. After all the work she has put into challenging herself this year, something like this test should be easy.

I was interested to see that Harriet had tried it before and I'm impressed with her results. She is pretty dedicated about working on flexibility as well as cardio and I see it pays off.

As for me, there's no point trying it, I know I'm a fail. But I will keep getting down on the floor and up again, more often I have. After all, if I am to have grandchildren, I'll want to be able to play with them. My mom was almost 39 when she had me and I remember her playing on the floor with my kids and my daycare kids so she'd be at least 70 at that point and still able to get down and up on her own.

I was on the floor tonight deep cleaning the office. It hurts to get down and it often takes me several tries to psych myself up to get up. But more of the office is cleaned now. Still not finished because I ran out of light. The large room (about 18' long) is lit by two 40 watt bulbs so once the sun went down I couldn't do deep cleaning. It happens dh will be gone out for lunch tomorrow so I'll get at it then. His desk and the other wood needs polishing.

I've ended up with two boxes in the kitchen. I emptied another box so that's an accomplishment. Of the two in the kitchen, one is dd's Nintendo she loaned me to entertain the boys so it needs a home. The other box is currently a mystery box.
