I don't think I told y'all --
DGS' team did pretty well at the scholars' bowl competition. They did not make the finals, but considering it was their first time ever to be in an actual match with another school, I think they were pretty pleased. DGS was the team captain, and in the individual awards, he placed fourth. However, ddil saw an updated list of scores, and he was actually third overall, and we were very proud of him.
As ddil said, it's the first time he's really earned something on his own -- he's been on winning sports teams, but he has never had a big part in their success, if you understand what I'm saying. He's a good teammate, and never complains about his playing time or anything, but he's just not gifted athletically. But as one of our friends commented on ddil's FB post, "He was born for quiz bowl." LOL.
Embarrassing note for his Nana the retired English teacher -- he said "If ___ had been there, we probably would have gotten into the finals. He's the one that knows all the literature questions!" LOL -- you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink (or read.)

LucyLee - Congratulations to your DGS on his success in first academic type meet.
I cannot understand why the academic meets are low-key but any athletic games are a big deal. Most of the academic meets don't allow anyone to attend. Parents aren't even allowed to watch. Can you imagine the outrage if no one was allowed to attend a football game? When DS52 was in high school he went to state and won academic meet. It was treated as no big deal. If they had won state in basketball there would have been parades and front page news. >>>>stepping down off my soap box<<<<
We went to funeral home to sign book for the brother of my XSisIL that died 6 weeks ago. I can't imagine their 89 year old Mom having to bury her 2nd child within 2 months of each other. So sad.
Gary and his children called to encourage us to come visit with them. They were gathered at a home a couple miles from us so went and visited for a couple hours. DH is quiet when in groups now, as if he can't process the conversations. He has always been the social one and I am the quiet one. Now our roles are reversed.
I am hesitant about taking DH to funeral where loads of people will be and the socialization & conversation will be nonstop. I guess we can go and see how he does. We can leave if he gets overwhelmed.

Happy for your dgs, lucylee. Maybe you could suggest that reading literature is an effective strategy for him, now that he is considering how to improve event success. The percentages would suggest it's efficient.
Ddolder's household did get their internet back at 4 pm, in time for the children to scramble and view classes after the fact, make deadlines. The repair guys came and managed it, though it took a long time and now they want to run a whole new cable later. She had to reassure them when they called her from the road that they could follow the tire tracks and get to the house. They were worried that they would be following tracks of a four-wheeler or something by mistake, leave the actual driveway and get stuck. I can see that - could be a worry. Mail carrier had made tracks halfway and dd had driven to meet those tracks to give the internet guys confidence that they had a path.
As for us, no one has been on our driveway. Tomorrow we will request that ds do some driving there for us, maybe back and forth a couple times. That's if he thinks it's wise to even contemplate us going out to my appt Wed. early a.m. We'll see.
It goes down to 17 tonight, after 10 last night. But tomorrow it warms up. It's possible we'll try the appt. Not too excited about it, since this is for the med that always makes me have such an allergic reaction, I feel yucky the rest of the day. But I can't get out of it, just postpone. So, if I can get it over with, I should.

Harriet, I doubt suggesting more reading to DGS would be futile. I might try it though -- I wonder if he could research something like literature trivia or something on YouTube. Maybe he should watch Jeopardy. Honestly, he is just not very competitive. It's strange how he loves sports but if they win, he's fine; if they lose, he's fine. He was kinda embarrassed, I think, by the attention at church yesterday -- the pastor announced how well he had done and he just smiled a little bit and blushed, I think.
LadyM -- you are so right! If a sports team even competes on the state level, school lets out to go support the team and it's a huge deal.
Academics are just something of an afterthought. I don't even know if the high school has an academic team. When I was teaching, the National Honor Society was pretty active, but more as a service organization than any sort of competitive thing. DS did participate in, and won, a history competition that his 11th grade history teacher took him and another boy. But academic-types are sorta seen as nerds and they don't get the attention athletes do. (I'm kinda crowding your soapbox, aren't I?) Belated congratulations to your DS, BTW!
I hope your roads clear soon, Harriet. Snow is pretty, but it sure can create a lot of problems.
And I hope things go well for LordM at the funeral, LadyM. You know, if you go late -- close to time for the service to begin, then you can avoid a lot of the small talk, and then sit close to the back and exit quickly when it's over.
Dmom and I got away very quickly the other day (although we were in line over an hour to speak to the family during the visitation time.) There was one lady who stopped us on the way out, calling dmom's name, and we did stop to speak to her. She told dmom her name, and dmom remembered her, but dmom would never have recognized her if she had not told us her name.
But the standing in line part... oh my goodness. People coming in spoke to us... people in line spoke to us... and we talked to the lady behind us for the whole time we were in line. I thought she looked familiar and I heard her say her name to someone else -- I immediately realized who she was then; her grandmother and dmom's grandmother were sisters! I graduated with her sister and she is a few years older than me. Of course, she has about 50 first cousins -- her dad was one of 12 children, I think. But we enjoyed talking with her. I'm just saying you can avoid all that if you just go in and get a seat.
Laundry is on hangers now, except a few things belonging to dgrands that are in the dryer.
Church meeting was... tiresome. I need to type those notes. Pastor wants to start a lunch-time ladies Bible study on Thursdays and the senior adult outings, etc. I am just going to have to tell her, I am doing all I can do. Sunday School, Wednesday night group, signing checks every week and taking care of these council notes every few months, plus the yoga class once a week and the adult Bible study that I am doing, on my own, (so ddil can attend the class) but still -- doing. My cup is FULL. And that doesn't even mention the time I spend with dgrands and my dmom. I am finally beginning to realize that I actually do do a lot of stuff.

Lucylee, you do a lot for your family and your church. I completely understand not taking on more and surely she will also.
I'm up with ddog, who is in the yard trying to defecate. It's 30 degrees out, I sat on the porch for awhile in my big robe watching her. We've been up about 45 minutes so far. Our own vet is in the office tomorrow afternoon, and i left a long phone message for him and the receptionist was leaving him a note that I need to talk to him in case he didn't check phone messages before he got started. Surely there is something we can do. I don't know, we've used this vet for years and years but they are so busy now I feel like I can't get in to see him.
She's back in, I'm going to try to go back to bed.
