The Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula) is a medium-sized diving duck, smaller than a Mallard. It's black on the head, neck, chest and back, and white on the sides. It has a small crest and a yellow eye. In flight it shows an obvious white stripe across the back of the wing.

The Tufted Duck are found in the UK on lakes, reservoirs and flooded gravel pits.across lowland areas of England, Scotland and Ireland, but less commonly in Wales, with most birds being year-round residents. Numbers increase in the UK in winter because of birds moving to the UK from Iceland and northern Europe.

Tufted ducks feed on waterweed, plant seeds and water insects. Like most ducks, the 'drake' (male) has nothing to do with the incubation of the eggs or raising the young. The 'hen' (female) has eight to eleven eggs in a brood; the young becoming independent once their true feathers have fledged.

The scientific name of the tufted duck, fuligula, means 'sooty throat'.

Good morning everyone and happy Thursday!

Helia, yes, you're right, I did some d.some.time.in my garden yesterday morning, and then DFCW messaged and asked if I would like to go for a walk through the woods with her, so that was nice too.

KitKat, we were a very pleasant 23C yesterday. Your dessert that DGD helped make sounds delicious!

L.Ann, you've reminded.me.I need to return my books to the library - I'll probably do this tomorrow when.Im in town.

Laura, WTG having your house almost company ready!

Dogged, Germane evidently likes fine.din8ng, and expects her.staff.to meet her needs! Your weather certainly did not sound conducive.to outdoor events.

Gma, I'm glad your DF BS is comfortable. Yikes on the water 8 gress, but good your roofer was able to attend so promptly. WTG with your housekeeping accomplishments!

Yesterday was full and productive. I had a good time in my garden, and a lovely long walk with DF CW. Her DD G13yo is struggling academically at school,.despite trying her best, although she does have e difficulty with concentration,. CW feels the time to act is now, otherwise she will slip further and further behind, so has pressed the school to test for dyslexia.amd.ADHD.

Fortunately,.G has already met the criteria.for.SEND ( special educational needs) so the school are providing extra English and maths lessons for her. CW is pleased,.but G.is.not at all impressed! CW is also implementing a social media ban for G from September (ahead of the government.bam.fir under 16s.from next January) as she is.cimcerned.ab8ut the effect Tiktok,.Snapchat etc is having on G's concentration. CW has an app on her.ohime.(I forget what it's called!) which gives.her.complete control over G's phone,.so she can.block..apos,.or even turn off.G's.
phone completely if she is being rude or.disrespectful. As you can guess,.G is Not Happy about this. CW is happy to listen to G's argument,.so long as she remains polite and respectful, and she can,. of course still chat to her friends through What's App, just not on the other platforms. ATM there's a lot of.rudeness.and.name.calling,.but CW is standing firm. She feels G's generation is the first to grow up with social media,.and from what she's seen,.it isn't doing a child who already has concentration issues any good. I did warn CW about the possibility of G.doenloading a VPN like many Australian kids are.now doing since their ban, to get round the age limit,.but she doesn't think G is tech savvy enough to do that. Yet. And in any case,.it would show up on her phone.

I also cleaned.the.kitchem,.and DH came.home.with the mews that the car is.now.booked.in.for.20th July.at.PS's garage.

Today will be church and then Jude has weight loss clinic in the afternoon.

That duck looks very similar to ones I think I saw on our local river this past winter, Kitty. I looked it up and they're quite rare in Michigan -- but it's still possible. I saw it diving, which made me think it was a loon at first, which we do see here occasionally in the winter, but its color and head shape were wrong. It's wise of CW to limit social media. J12yo still doesn't have her own phone yet. I'm SO glad smart phones weren't a thing while our kids were growing up. Easy access to lots of social media makes raising kids so much more complex. Smart phones were just coming out when our girls were in high school, but we didn't buy them one for a few years. We also had a home policy: internet use was only allowed in public areas of our house. Dh and I followed it too. Kids could not bring laptops to bedrooms. Although, I do remember ds working on a paper on his laptop in his bedroom once, so we must have made exceptions.
Hope you had a nice walk, L Ann. It's not too hot this early in the day, I'd guess.

It was a busy day yesterday. I barely got ready for class in time - but it went well. I had a lot of small things to do for payroll before and after class. AC has asked me to tutor the son of one of our students 2x/ week. I've said "yes", much to dh's chagrin, but we need to see if the schedule works for them. I know AC is desperate when she asks me; no other teacher is available.

I'm heading otd to WW now. It's time to face the numbers. I'm sure it will be a gain; I haven't been able to go the last 3 Thursdays, which were busy with hosting houseguests for dd30's ceremony, going to the conference in OH, going camping up north. . .

I'll BBL with lists.

Good morning :D
Thanks for another Ducky Start, Kittykatt - I really like this one:)
Yes, the dessert was good and DLittle added her touch by crumbling some amaretti on top... She is full of ideas.
LAnn - I hope Dr is routine and all goes well
helia - flip phones are a good option for kids . They don't need social media.

I disappeared yesterday as family came over just as I was going to put up my feet and we went out for dinner together.
Just as we were heading out a thunderstorm came with crazy winds that took down trees on the next street  .
The storm cooled temps enough so I was able to take ddog out for a walk when we came back.
However, it's back to crazy heat again (It was 114 w. humidity yesterday...)

Today:
I have my little DGd in the morning- then I drop her off.
Will take dDog for a store walk as walking outside for more than a few minutes is not an option for either one of us.
I do have a class tonight.
Going to start w. MR

Yes, our kids had flip phones at first, kitkat! 114 - THAT is really hot. Stay cool and safe. Enjoy time with DGD.

Back from WW - a 1 lb. gain which is fair. I emailed CG1 to let them know that we're making the weekend camping trip into a day trip. We're still trying to catch our breath after all the busyness of the last weeks.

I think our forecast high is 96F. I'm not sure what it is with the humidity. Kitkat has me curious -- real feel is 102F.

Today, I've already gone to WW @ 8 am. I'm meeting with AC online at 11:30 for our weekly campus academics check in meeting. I'm working out with AS at 2 pm, and I'm having a phone conversation with friend RVE after that, I think. Dinner will be gnocchi with sausage from the freezer and green salad. Other things to possibly do: update lists, call Dr., see if I can return a pair of shoes, get clean sheets on bed, and do light colored laundry. Also, I need to set up GGT spreadsheet for S6 and check syllabi. I was supposed to file S5 exams, but I forgot when I was at work yesterday.

I'm going to skip the todo list here for now.

Next:
- some qt
- back exercises
