Re: Sense and Sensibility Saturday
Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility follows the Dashwood sisters—prudent Elinor (representing "sense") and emotional Marianne (representing "sensibility")—after their father's death leaves them impoverished. The sisters navigate societal pressures and heartbreak as they pursue love, ultimately learning to balance reason and emotion.
After Mr. Dashwood dies, his estate passes to his son from a previous marriage, leaving his widow and three daughters with very little money. The family is forced to move to a modest cottage in Devonshire. There, romantic and impulsive Marianne falls deeply in love with the dashing John Willoughby, while older sister Elinor quietly cares for Edward Ferrars, the brother-in-law of their half-brother. Heartbreak soon strikes both sisters:Marianne is devastated when Willoughby abruptly abandons her to marry a wealthy woman, later revealing he only pursued Marianne for her charm while in crushing debt.Elinor learns in secret that Edward has been secretly engaged to a manipulative young woman, Lucy Steele, for years.
Through these trials, the sisters evolve. Elinor handles Edward's engagement with dignified self-control, ultimately being rewarded when Lucy breaks it off to marry his brother. This frees Edward to propose to Elinor, and they marry. Meanwhile, Marianne, having recovered from a life-threatening illness caused by her despair, realizes that the older, stable Colonel Brandon is deeply devoted to her. She eventually learns to value his quiet reliability and marries him, bringing both sisters to a happy and secure life.

Re: Sense and Sensibility Saturday
Good morning everyone and happy Saturday!
Helia, I hope J did well at her swimming, and all of you had a good time.
Sorry about the smoke,.L.Ann, that must make life difficult.
Gma, ideally I would like to get Freddie's nails done before his appointment on Wednesday, but I would rather not sedate him (even lightly!) in this heat, so I may leave it until the west cools down.
Dogged, thank you for the maggi explanation - they do sound tasty. I'm sorry the cheap vegetable pick up didn't work out. Do you have the Olio app? That can be a good source of free food that's being given away but the supermarkets etc as it's nearly reached its expiry date.
Yesterday I had a big clear up in the kitchen as it was bad,
and took everything out that didn't belong there. Even DH noticed the difference! I then folded some.of the laundry that was dry enough to PA, and mended a small hole in my top. . Then when my back garden was finally in the shade,.and it had cooled from the high of 30C to a more pleasant 25 C, I deadheaded and weeded out there, and fed all the pots, sprayed the roses, and spent some time sitting out there messaging with DF PM (she had some news to tell me, and also needed to borrow a cake box - I've put one with my bag ready for Sunday, so I don't forget).
Today DH is going out with his friends. I need to bake early before the kitchen gets too hot. There's still some laundry left to fold and it would be good to spend even a little time decluttering, as I can see "stuff" is starting to build up a bit in some places - it either needs to find a "proper" home, or go OTD. I also need to water - early out the front and later on in the back garden - so I think I will find.plenty to keep occupied today!

Re: Sense and Sensibility Saturday
◕‿◕ * * * Good Morning! * * * ◕‿◕
Kittykatt, thanks for the start. Oh, at least one book in today's week that I have read (or, started). Finding the right time to garden is difficult these days, it's either very early or very late in the day. Is it your dessert for tomorrow that you will be baking ?
Sorry for those suffering from the wildfire smoke, helia, L.Ann... I hope it's not damaging for the health. I suppose it can be kind of depressing too, to witness nature / wilderness being destroyed in such large areas.
I'm not really CUOPed although I peeked in now and then during the week. We had an extended weekend in St Nazaire for the 14th July-weekend (Bastille day). Sad that most fireworks were cancelled due to forest fires or the very high heat. I hope we can see fireworks later in the summer.
The heat is now bearable again, there were storms on Thursday, they helped water trees and gardens and fields, so that's good. And our water cistern is half-full.
Many to-dos this weekend, but not too much cleaning because MrNG invited some friends for dinner on Thursday and cleaned the Entrance, LR and kitchen, also the patio, before they arrived.
TADAs
up late, I needed some extra sleep
coffee then tea and bfast
time with DS10 talking, while MrNG and DS8 did the weekly groceery shopping in the store
helped put away the groceries
TODOs
prep lunch, serve, cleanup
long list of to-dos, to choose from
prep dinner (MrNG will probably do it, he's planning pita sandwiches, with meat grilled on the plancha)
if courageous, dye my hair (first time, I expect there will be trouble and messes)
family movie night
there's the soccer "small finale" game, England vs France, the teams that did'nt make it to the final game, but it starts at 11pm
Have a beautiful Saturday !
I hope to BBL with tada-s.

Re: Sense and Sensibility Saturday
Good afternoon, FFB! I hope you had a lovely long weekend away, despite the heat. How helpful of Mr NG to have done some of the cleaning.
I'm going to bake a cake for us and make a dessert for tomorrow while the kitchen is still cool (it faces west, so ATM I'm trying to do as little as possible in there later in the day!). The cake is just for us to have something sweet during the week. IMHO,ost shop bought cakes here are expensive, far too sweet, amd often have questionable ingredients. ( I remember going to the patisserie when I was in France withy aunt as a child, and they sold the most wonderful sweets baked goods. Not sure if that is still a thing?)
I've enjoyed my tiny front garden while it was still cool out there , and now I really need to get on with the baking.

Re: Sense and Sensibility Saturday
LAnn, helia and even FrenchFlyBebe while away, it's disappointing to hear the results and the struggles with smoke. CathyS and Mystery Woman were telling yesterday about the daily difficulties, and Nancy as well. I hope safety issues improve along with everyone's air quality.
Kittykatt, that is a meaningful Emerson quote, isn't it? Really practical, really eloquent, gratefully too long for any needlepoint project but worth writing on something, for sure! Makes a good card file card. Nice to hear you are getting to mending and having gardening enjoyment.
My ddolder and the grandsons will be glued to the game I'm sure. I try to learn enough to say intelligent things.

Re: Sense and Sensibility Saturday
Which team are they cheering for, Harriet? Dh has a mild interest, but I don't know who he would cheer for. Maybe Enjoy the game!!
L Ann, has the smoke gotten to you now? It is passing us, according to the smoke maps.
Kitty, J got 1st in the races we watched yesterday. This is a state competition, so she's #1 in the state in these events.I enjoy Jane Austen books and have read most of them multiple times. Sense and Sensibility is a favorite. What are you baking?
AQI in Michigan is much improved!
We're currently in another city farther north, and its' significantly better here ~ Not hazy; we can see the sun. According to the maps, it's much better back home today, in the 60s. On Thursday, it was around 500. Yesterday, it was in the 400s. Apparently, Detroit, MI (about 40 miles from us) had the worst air quality in the world on Thursday. yay.
J12yo won the 2 races we saw yesterday evening, so she's #1 in the state in those events. Her best event for which she is nationally ranked #16 is today (200 meter breaststroke), but we're going home today. I'm sure we'll hear about it!
Dh and I slept really late. I think I got almost 10 hours sleep.
I think dh and I will try to join dd28 at a dog park at the beach (Lake Michigan) and then head home. She's already there, so we'll need to rush.
