Michael Mann is an acclaimed American director, screenwriter, and producer known for his distinct visual style and hard-boiled crime dramas. Born in Chicago in 1943, he studied English literature at the University of Wisconsin–Madison before pursuing film at the London Film School. Mann initially cut his teeth in television, writing for hit shows like Starsky & Hutch and later creating the era-defining series Miami Vice, which revolutionized television aesthetics with its neon palettes and pop music soundtracks. His feature directorial debut came with the 1981 neo-noir thriller Thief, establishing his signature focus on professional criminals and meticulous attention to real-world detail.

He achieved peak critical and commercial success during the 1990s with a string of cinematic masterpieces. In 1992, he directed the epic historical drama The Last of the Mohicans, demonstrating his ability to handle large-scale action and deep romance. Mann then directed the 1995 crime epic Heat, featuring the legendary first on-screen pairing of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, which is widely considered one of the greatest heist films ever made. He followed this with the 1999 corporate whistleblower drama The Insider, earning seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Director and Best Picture, cementing his status as a premier Hollywood filmmaker.

In the 21st century, Mann became a pioneer in digital filmmaking, embracing high-definition digital cameras to capture realistic, low-light nightscapes. This experimental aesthetic defined hit thrillers like Collateral (2004) and his big-screen adaptation of Miami Vice (2006). Known for his intense research, atmospheric electronic scores, and complex, deeply masculine antiheroes, Mann has maintained a dedicated global following. His later projects, including the historical crime film Public Enemies (2009) and the biographical drama Ferrari (2023), continue to showcase his enduring obsession with highly driven, obsessive professionals.

Tonight, Germane lost a battle to pasta. I put a noodle in her mouth and turned away for a moment. When I turned back, she was rolling across the floor and the noodle was shaking its fist at her and yelling "And don't come back!" It's the first time that I've seen that happen.

Dogged, so how long did it take you to stop laughing?

Up since 4:50, which was not exactly planned - I think DBD was roaming around and that woke me up. She claims she's been up since 3:45, meaning she's likely to fall asleep mid-morning watching cartoons - not a bad thing, if you ask me, as it's a work day for me! Tomorrow would have been better for such an early start, as DS has a medical apt (follow-up on his ear infection - swimmer's ear as an unplanned souvenir from our Turkey vacation) at 6:30 am - the earliest I could get as he needs to be in the city at 9am for his programming camp. Oh well, I'll just get a week of early starts to reset myself for going to bed early!

I need to get groceries today - I'll do that before starting on work, and I want to get upstairs cleaned and tend to the garden. Maybe a trip to the small garden center in the afternoon? The one that's a couple miles from us should already have their own produce - the green houses used to grown their seedlings are put to good use over the summer growing their own vegetables for sale, fully local, completely fresh and oh so yummy! And also need to tackle a lot of paperwork and start reviewing packing lists for summer camps for the girls (DBD is going with the scouts for 2 weeks and the twins are each going to a week-long camp that I booked with an agency - summer used to be easy with all four kids leaving for the same place at the same time with the same packing list, but not anymore!)

Oh, my, that is an early start. It sounds like you already have plans for the extra time. But your dkids have fun plans to look forward to.
I have given Germane her pills with cheese, and they treated her much more kindly than the pasta. She has taken herself off to bed, probably for the night. The one last useful thing that I plan to do before bed is to wrestle the comforter into a clean duvet cover.
Oh, I'm wrong. Germane is back looking for what's on offer, so I guess she was not too badly traumatized by the pasta incident.

doggedly, I think fly swatters are still pretty cheap - unless you buy the battery operated kind that zap and shock the bug to death.

I actually did buy one of those, Gma, because I love gadgets. But it never worked, so I threw it away. Without the electricity, it's more like playing badminton with the fly than a functioning swatter.

My bed has a nice fresh duvet cover and pillow case, and I think that I really am done for the night. See you in the morning!

Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. Sorry about the early start but you're very organised (as ever! )

Dogged, WTG getting the table together - I'm very impressed with the layout you've planned. I'm especially impressed that the table you've put together is stable! ( Some months ago, you may remember that DH out together his new to his.work desk, and it rocks - both back to front and side to side. IMHO it's unusable in its current state, but he seems happy with it. However, I have plans when he retires to get Handyman J in to fix its deficits - I think it needs bracing underneath - and then I will be able to use it too! ).

Helia, than you for your kind words - Sunday is the day when I make an effort to do something a little special, and make a dessert (we don't have dessert during the week, except perhaps some fruit if we're.still hungry).

KitKat, sorry about the dog issues - I think any dog would.react at being disturbed in such a vulnerable position, so surely it's only common sense.for the other owner to pull their dog away, or not let them close in the first place? Doing Fred's nails is ok, but it does take planning, and works best if he is hungry!

Gma, I m sorry about your friend 's Mum,.but it does sound as though it was.a.release for everyone. I'm glad you had such a productive time when your DBro was visiting. I do hope you can find Jane Austen at the library. My personal favourite is Pride and Prejudice (I think Miss Austen really "gets" teenagers well!)

Today is not going as planned. DH started bombarding me.with questions.as soon as I woke up, wanting to know the exact itinerary of my day, as he will be WFH today once he has sorted out the car. ( I do not cope well with questions until I have had time to wake up properly, and I certainly have very little idea about what exact time I'll be doing things today, as it's a "free" day at home for me without any appointments !) I do, of course , have a plan of what I would like to get done.today, but the exact time.when each part of my day gets done depends on so many variables - how quickly it gets hot outside, who I chat to when I'm outside, and.what extra things I discover that need doing , (if I see that the path needs sweeping, it makes sense to do it there and then, rather than adding it to a list!) to name but a few. I have sent him to go and ring the RAC for a tow to the garage, to give.me a few minutes peace and help me.regain my sanity!

So... I had to find the telephone number for the RAC for DH as he "couldn't find it". ( It's in the filing cabinet.in the box file clearly labelled CAR in big black capital letters on its spine, so I really.dont know what else to do!). And the very nice RAC.man has just come.and is now towing our car and DH to the garage. I should really.be doing something productive while he's gone, but I'm just sitting and enjoying the quiet house.
