Revive a Card No Electricity Nite Prep.

Post by Nancy »

Do you remember that card?
What did you do?

Yesterday got a text from the power co. that in the next 48 hrs. possible no power fire / wind ect.
So I've been thinking on this. Some had been done watering jugs down stairs.
Some in freezer to help keep it cold.
Not much in it thankfully.
I have meat cooked and on hand for sandwiches.

Woke up thinking of the 5 gal. water jug we used for camping.
So I have it set up outside for use at the work station.
Could be for hands, plant, did remember I have pepper plates.
Popcorn was a fav. snack when kids were young and could be done
on the grill.
I do have a small table top propane grill, and camping gear.
I did give away the tent.

I've asked dsis for ideas as in the south the Tornado took off part of the roof one time.

Next up water stuff like duds.
I made a list of things to do w/ out power.
Crafts read write draw etc.

Slept well up at 4:45 ish.
Watered the beds in back.
Some called it pioneering.

Charge up devices.

Good morning, Nancy.
Oh, the power going out - ick. Hope it is brief!
For us, the problem often relates to trees going down somewhere along our very tree-lined rural pathways of electric lines around here. I fill up jugs with water in general prep for that. The few times we've known in advance, the bathtub.
Ddolder is on a different line from us, ds on the same. So, communication with neighbors, as you mentioned before - yes, that can really help and be reassuring. But in a situation that takes out an area's power, of course you have to be even more thoughtful for that wider problem. I'll keep thinking and maybe come up with ones you haven't.

For one thing to do while power is out - make notes about bright things you want to say to your friends here!
Also, if there is hand-sewing as part of any project, store that up.

I can just FEEL Twins' Mom wanting us to consider the fact that we are at the end of July today - wow, the summer is hot, but not lingering!

In the night, with difficult side effects, I figured out the relatively new med that is causing at least some. I will be on the phone with dr's offices today. HRH was up with me, and that didn't do him any good but made me feel better, lol. The med is certainly not an "elective", but is just not the most important thing, and so it's outahere. Looking forward to at least some improvement in how I feel.

I was up before 5.

I vacuumed. I mopped. I moved all books back into the library. I put a small bag of flour into the container I use for flour. I even did the only load of laundry and dried it and put it all away already. I also had a shower. I've burned all the small cardboard.

What's the only thing I haven't done?? Dishes.

Dh's PSW came just after 9 a.m. today, which was nice.

Oh, no, Nancy! At least you have some warning instead of that unexpected tree coming down on the line. In our early years in our second house on the mountain (1996 to ???) we had power outages all the time. We were at the end of the subdivision and the back way in was a road that looked like it had left civilization altogether for a bit. There were trees that often came down over the power line and I was consistently prepared with oil or battery lanterns for lighting, sterno, a grill for cooking outside, and later a gas stovetop that could be lit manually. Later, the road was improved because the elementary school and later middle/high school was built further out and they consistently took out the trees that could reach power lines. On the other side of the road was the state forest. At least it's not cold right now Nancy, and you have the basement.

It is the end of July - I don't know how I didn't see Nancy's post when I tried to start this a.m.

I vowed yesterday that I would call the doc today about the knee and of course it's better today. I also woke up with the "runs" this a.m. and had crampy tummy for awhile. I think it's better now but I'm just having trouble getting started on anything right now. We're going to services tonight and having dinner out with A and V and family after.

Good morning

No electricity is sadly normal happening here. It isn't unusual to happen a couple times a month. Sometimes for a few hours and occasionally for days. Cash is king when it happens. We have one grocery store (miles away) that will stay open when power is lost. They hand out flashlights for customers to use as they shop in the dark store. Cash is the only payment they accept during these times. A fairly new service is the ability to purchase gas when the power is out. A local convenience store recently installed a generator to runs the gas pumps when power is out. Again....cash is required.

We have a whole house generator that runs everything when we lose power now so it is normal life here when electricity is off. However, this is a fairly new luxury for us (10 years) so we have decades of experience going without power.

When we only had private well water we lost water when we lost power. Now we are on city water and it continues with no problems.

Food prep is focused on what is easy. We have gas stove and can always cook outside if needed. Restaurants are closed.

When lose power in summer, spend more time outside in the shade. When lose power in winter, close off the house and focus on keeping a small area warm. Candles work as light and heat source. It is like having a camping adventure inside the house with sleeping bags and lots of blankets.

My biggest prep for going without electricity -
** Keep cash on hand. The banks are closed and ATM don't work without power.
** Have a way to charge cell phones. They can be charged in the vehicle but an easier way is to have portable power banks ready to be used.
** Have a battery powered radio available.

Good morning! Things are running a bit better this morning. I don’t really want to get moving, so I told myself I would do one of the next three cards, and here I am! I will do the treadmill after this, before the sun hits it, then tackle the breakfast dishes. That shouldn’t be too bad because we don’t have leftover dinner dishes — we picked up burgers on the way to take DC to rehearsal.

Nancy, you sound not only well-prepared but ready to make the most of your potential power outage. I hope it misses you, though. (Although I’m glad the warnings are for potential outages and not for fire headed your way.)

Harriet, since the med is not an elective, as you say, I hope they can find an alternative without the side effects.

Once those dishes are done, it sounds like you have a nice, leisurely day ahead of you, Cathy!

I hope your tummy feels better soon, Twins! Is your DH back already, or expected back later today?

Once I’m done here, I will head up to rouse DC again. We need to leave for their rehearsal in less than an hour. Then I may end up doing dishes before treadmill — my legs might mutiny if I try to hit the treadmill right after going up and down stairs.

CI /
We have walked.
I cooked up the bacon there was maybe 1/4 of a package.
Peeled the eggs.
Did an inventory check on pantry stuff. Pretty good.

Making notes on the items to do while power is possibly down.
Back in the day they said card games, chess, board games.

I do not have a full sized ice chest a half sized one.
Other fam. members do I think have ones to spare if needed.
I could use a tote.
I do have a small lunch box sized one, and a half sized one.

Glad to know I do not have to worry about a well pump going out and am on city water.
1st load is done in the dryer.
Last load is in now.
------
In other news lead pastor is stepping down.
Been thinking that would happen for a year now.
So yes I did see that coming.

Some OMM
-cemetery, I didn't get there yesterday, need to check several things (see yesterday)
-pedicure if I'm wearing sandals tomorrow night
-what to wear tomorrow night
-get back with friend that is to host an event this month
-ditto another friend
-dr appointment for knee? It's consistently hurt pretty badly since Tuesday but it's not bad right now

More....I tried on some things from my closet and most are too big. I have a sleeveless knit sundress, knee length that is cute with a white denim jacket. OTOTH might be underdressed. (Better than overdressed. There's a tea length cocktail dress I could wear but it's dressy and has to have a special bra or go braless. Don't have a bra that would work with it and don't want to bra shop. I think it would be overdressed.) Summer chic? I have no idea.

I'm going to the mall for a look see. I made an 11:15 appointment for a pedicure. And I'll go by the cemetery while I'm out.

Why am I so worried about what I'm wearing to this? I guess growing up as a child w/o nice clothes and with goodwill clothes marked me for life. And I like these people but this will be a dressy crowd I suspect.

well...... it appears Astra will have more interaction with me than I expected. I do hourly outside walks and Astra is doing them with me. I wasn't expecting this but it seems to be happening. Hopefully DD15 will decide to start doing the walks with Astra. "you can lead a horse to water but you can't force them to drink"

Knee and hip joint pain - a couple OTC supplements have proven to help us -
turmeric ginger and black pepper
Glucosamine & Chondroitin
I know they work because I have quit putting them in DH daily meds as a test. He didn't know they were missing. Within a couple days he started saying how his knees are hurting. Without telling him, I add them back into his daily meds and his joint pain goes away.
