A turnip is a versatile cruciferous root vegetable belonging to the cabbage (Brassica) family. It features a distinctive creamy-white skin with a purple, red, or greenish top where the root has broken through the soil into the sunlight.
Baby turnips are mild, sweet, and crisp like a radish, while larger, winter turnips have a sharper, peppery bite. Smaller turnips can be eaten raw (sliced or grated into salads). Larger turnips should be washed and peeled to remove their tough, bitter outer skin. Turnips are excellent when cubed and roasted with olive oil, boiled and mashed, tossed into stews, or air-fried into "turnip fries". The leafy green tops are fully edible and highly nutritious, tasting similar to mustard greens or spinach when sautéed.
A one-cup serving of raw turnips contains just 36 calories and 8 grams of carbohydrates. Vitamins: Turnips are exceptionally rich in Vitamin C, providing around 30% of your Daily Value per cup, alongside essential nutrients like folate, potassium, and fibre.
They are rapid growers, ready to harvest in 6 to 8 weeks from seed, thriving best in cooler spring or autumn weather.
Am interesting.note about the "Swede" confusion: In Scotland, Ireland, and parts of Northern England, the word "turnip" (or "neep") often refers to the larger, yellow-fleshed rutabaga/swede, whereas standard turnips are sometimes called "white turnips".

KitKat, the lemonade stall sounded great fun - I'm sure it was a huge success.
Laura, how lovely to spend time with little J -how old is he now? I'm glad your DD is doing well. You've probably already tried this with the dishwasher, but have you cleaned the filter and checked the salt and rinse aid are both topped up?
Harriet, I have seen "grow your own mushrooms" kits available in some of the gardening catalogues, where they provide everything you need - I think you just have to keep it in a cool dark place. I've never tried them, but they look interesting.
Dogged, I did see an interesting recipe for those bananas that "get away and become overripe. Simply mash and spread in the bottom.of a.small,.lined baking tin. Spread peanut butter on top, followed by melted chocolate, and then freeze. It can then be broken / cut into bite sized chunks and eaten straight from the freezer (or just allowed to thaw a little) as a.snack on a hot day. This recipe does assume,.of course, that there is space in one's freezer! ( Not the case with us ATM,.as fish and.duck breasts.were on special offer recently!

Yesterday the housework went smoothly (no interruptions, except.from the kitties, and I cleaned the upstairs windows and as much of the cladding.as I could reach.
DH and I had a long chat in the evening about adopting Mica if her owners don't return. Various events have led us to believe this maybe the case. (I'm very keen, he's less so ATM, due to very valid concerns about affordability and whether all the cats will get on with each other.) I did a few quick calculations and a couple of checks online to see what the likely fixed costs.(Insurance, healthy pet club,.food) would be, and explained that we won't have big "start up" costs, as we already have everything we need, and the healthy pet club scheme spreads the cost of her vaccinations, flea control,.wormer.etc, and gives us a huge discount on her spay. The only thing we dont have is a bed, as none of ours have ever used a cat bed ( they prefer our bed, the chairs and, of course the cosy blanket by the radiator in winter! ), but a cardboard box brought up from our stash in the garage and lined with a cosy blanket should do just fine. As to whether they'll all get on, I think they will, with careful gradual introduction, and, of course , after she's been spayed. ATM she's quite hormonal, (think teenage girl with fur! ) and I think she's still getting over having kittens back in the early summer. I'm going to start the scent transfer process today, rubbing ours with a cloth and then showing it to her, so she starts to become accustomed to their existence. Even if her owners do come.back, it won't hurt, and if they don't, we'll have a head start on their introduction .
Today I need to clean the patio doors, and the rest of the sitting room. I also need to prioritise a walk before it gets too hot!

I didn't know that turnips are in the cabbage family! Welcome suggestions for eating them.
I am so grateful for the kindness of the young people who are here. My kitchen sink totally backed up, plugged after supper tonight. I have to call "Jetter Clean" in the morning. They are the people who unclog the clogs around here. I called my brother, who knows a lot about plumbing. 2 of the young people helped, while my brother ( he's amazing!) gave us directions on what to do. ( He happens to live 1500 miles away!) When we discovered that the blockage was not in the trap but further in the line, actually in the part of the pipe that's in the wall, we stopped. There is a pretty big mess.
Fortunately, they liked what I had for breakfast Monday, and I have plenty left over, so we can have that again for breakfast. I think I'll try to shoo them out as soon as they eat, and hope the jetter guy can get here ASAP. Then I can clean things up, and we can go back to living normally.
