The European green woodpecker (Picus viridis), also known as the yaffle and sometimes called a nickle, is a large green woodpecker with a bright red crown and a black moustache. Males have a red centre to the moustache stripe which is absent in females. It is resident across much of Europe and the western Palearctic but in Spain and Portugal it is replaced by the similar Iberian green woodpecker (Picus sharpei).

The European green woodpecker spends much of its time feeding on ants on the ground and does not often 'drum' on trees like other woodpecker species. Though its vivid green and red plumage is particularly striking, it is a shy bird, and is more often heard than seen, drawing attention with its loud calls. A nest hole is excavated in a tree; four to six eggs are laid which hatch after 19–20 days.

Good morning everyone and happy Wednesday!

L.Ann,.I hope Little Bit enjoys her first day at school.

Helia, you and DH have worked so hard on the room.,.I'm sure your guest will be very happy there.

LOL at the picture, Dogged!

I hope you enjoyed supper with your friends,.Gms.

Today, DH goes to the office and I'm at home. It's a grey day out, but I don't think it's raining yet. M.y main job today is to tackle the kitchen. If it's.not raining, I also need to water the roses in my front garden..

That all sounds very good for Little Bit, L.Ann. I hope you have a good day as well!

Ive done my cat duties, taken Fred out, sorted out upstairs and had breakfast. Going to water the roses in the front garden now, and then do some deadheading round the back.

Hi kittykatt, thanks for the start, loved hearing the owl yesterday. I read your message, thanks for answering my curiosity. It's grey here too and we will have storms.

L.Ann good first day of school to Little Bit ! 2 classes of each grade seems like a large elementary school to me.

Uneventful day at payroll so far. Lots of small tasks to catch up on, then bigger subjects later or tomorrow.
Greetings to all who will follow !

Tadas
Morning routine, commute
Morning at payroll
Handled annoying phone call from Boss who is on vacation
Lunch break

Todos
Afternoon at payroll, commute
Sow lettuces ? If not rainy
Plans for dinner with DNeighbours on Friday

I like birds and am enjoying this week's theme, though I've been a bit distracted. I can't wait until we start up the bird feeder again this fall! We don't have green woodpeckers here, so interesting! But we do have woodpeckers here with that same red cap. Thank you Kitty! And enjoy your home day.
Happy first day of school to Little Bit, L Ann! Will you see her today?
Nice to see you FFB. Have a good day back at work. I see your boss is still on vacation.

There were many excited messages and pics last night and this morning -- S and K are on their flight now!! It will land about 2pm. I'll aim to be at the airport around 2:30 pm, which means I have until about 2 to finish getting ready.

There are so many people in my life with a name that beings with S. In fact, the S that is on the flight has the same name as "S" our dear friend, wife of R the physician and mother to J12yo. S2 is another friend with the name that starts with S, and I meet yet another friend for coffee from time to time whom I call SS. I'm thinking of calling our niece, teenage S - SP, her first and last initials.

I posted yesterday that dh and I did a more thorough cleaning/ decluttering/ re-organizing of the room downstairs than I had intended. We didn't even start until 8 pm, but once dh gets going, it's hard to stop him. He pulled everything out of the 2 closets + built in shelves. He also moved some shelves and boxes, washed walls, took down blackout curtains (previous housemate M had wanted them in that room - but they can't be opened so the room got no natural light whereas it can now get a lot of natural light from the 4 windows that also have shades), and hung some pictures. I moved books, wiped down shelves, and cleaned a dried up mildew/ mold stain on the ceiling from an old leak. This inspired dh to wash the main wall (no mildew on the walls - he just has an old project of washing walls and told me he is the expert on that. Great! LOL!). I helped make decisions, shuttled bags to the garbage and cardboard to the recycling bin, etc. It was almost 11 pm when we finished -- and there are still some details I'm going to take care of this morning, like putting bedding on the bed. This room needs a good renovation - new windows, carpet, paint -- but not right now.

Other house news: the window washer dude is coming tomorrow and the carpet cleaners called me last night. I need to call them this morning.
