The flugelhorn is a high brass instrument similar to the trumpet and cornet, but with the wider conical bore of a bugle, producing a darker, mellower sound or timbre. Like trumpets and cornets, most flugelhorns are built in B♭, though some are in C. Developed in Germany in the late 18th century from earlier traditional signal instruments, bugles were fitted with tone holes to produce keyed bugles around 1800. The keyed bugle was soon replaced by valved bugles after the invention of valves in the 1820s. Modern flugelhorns usually have piston valves, though flugelhorns with rotary valves are common in central and eastern Europe. Initially adopted by military and brass bands in Europe, the flugelhorn began to be used as a solo jazz instrument in the mid 20th century by musicians including Miles Davis, Shorty Rogers, Clark Terry, and Chuck Mangione. It has established a place in band, jazz, and popular music, and is commonly played by trumpet players as a doubling instrument.

Notable players
As a member of the Woody Herman band in 1936, Joe Bishop was one of the earliest jazz musicians to use the flugelhorn. Shorty Rogers and Kenny Baker began playing it in the early 1950s, and Clark Terry used it in Duke Ellington's orchestra in the mid-1950s. Miles Davis further popularized the instrument in jazz on his early albums Miles Ahead (1957) and Sketches of Spain (1960), both arranged by Gil Evans. Chet Baker recorded several albums on the instrument in the 1950s and 1960s.

The American bebop trumpeter Marvin Stamm performed the flugelhorn solos on the song "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" from Paul McCartney's album Ram (1971). While most jazz flugelhorn players used the instrument as an auxiliary to the trumpet, in the 1970s Chuck Mangione gave up playing the trumpet and concentrated on the flugelhorn alone, notably on the title song from his jazz-pop album Feels So Good (1977).

In popular music, other notable flugelhorn players include Rick Braun, Mic Gillette, Jeff Oster, Scott Spillane, Terry Kirkman, and Rashawn Ross. The British-Bahraini musician Yazz Ahmed commissioned a quarter-tone flugelhorn to explore Arabic influences on her album La Saboteuse (2017) which received wide critical acclaim, including "Jazz Album of the Year" in the British music magazine The Wire.

Today DH is WFH and I have a free day. .My plans are going to depend on the weather, as I have both indoor and outdoor jobs to do. If it's anything like yesterday when we reached a very , very humid 28C, I'll need to get moving outside early. The temperature itself.was pleasant, it's just the humidity felt.like.being in a.jungle!

Summer vibes are still strong with you, aren't they, kittykatt!

For the first time in over two months, I get to have a work from home day without kids around! Of course, the downside of this arrangement is that I had to get up at 5:30 to help get them ready for school, but good things come at a price

The getting back to school week is tough, and it's not helped by the fact that work is super busy after everybody got back from summer hols, so I not only never got here since Monday, but also let the house slide into chaos.

What helps even less is more family drama. This will get deleted later on, but SIL, in her stupid greediness, managed to do something which would criminally implicate not only her, but also my husband. I think I will be able to roll everything back, but it won't be in writing till the end of the month, and I won't be sleeping well till then. I am slightly mad at my own husband, who, despite being married to a lawyer for over twenty years, still will sign things without consulting me and leave me dealing with the inevitable fallout. Also less than slighly mad at him for still making excuses for his sister, like "she didn't realize that it was wrong!" - like, dude, she's a selfish cow who has you jumping through hoops at the expanse of your immediate family and you keep falling for it every single time and you still don't see it?
I've already made up my mind - I do not want to see her or talk to her this Christmas. Depending on what happens between now and Christmas, I will either fake an illness, sending DH and the kids alone, or be frank abour my motivation. I do like DBIL, he's a decent guy, and I have no beef with him, but I don't know whether I can ever forgive her for the strain she's been putting on our marriage and for seriously endangering one of "my people". Fiercely protective of my own is one of my core values (another one is "doing things right even if it's less convenient", so you get how well this has been sitting with me), and if this was my sister, I'd go no contact without thinking twice.

But yeah. Family drama means that I get emotionally exhausted and things get chaotic. I've done tons of overtime this week (with a 12 hour business trip planned for next week) so I won't feel bad if I don't clock my full 6 hours today and work on getting things under control while kids are at school!

Trissie, I'm sure you will make the very best use of your time at home without any kids! All that family drama sounds horrendous and incredibly stressful for you having to pick up the pieces and sort out the mess created by your Sil. And I totally understand being mad at your DH for just signing something without consulting with the "family lawyer" first. BTW, IMHO, Christmas is stressful and exhausting enough without having to deal with those people in your life who cause extra stress, so you're quite right to stay home. Sometimes, one needs to think of one's own sanity and mental / emotional wellbeing.

trissie, it's nice to see you here, but ugh - I'm sorry about the family drama which you really don't need and your lawyer training makes you more attuned to. Sounds so stressful and exhausting. It sounds like your sil is a piece of work. I would wonder if she really didn't know that action was wrong, but I don't know her or particulars. I hope you can find the time and space for some emotional rest this weekend. . . Maybe spending time on the house to get things under control would be helpful emotionally/ mentally. ((HUGS))

We just had a thunder storm roll through, and it's supposed to rain off and on all morning. I'm meeting MM at the park to walk this morning. I've just texted her to see if she's still up for it. It looks like the rain will ease about the time we'd planned to walk. We will keep it short anyway bc of the leg/ buttocks pain I've been experiencing. Walking is less painful than prolonged sitting.

Kittykatt, about planners, I definitely have them on my mind. Well, I have "desk" on my mind in general. Will probably be posting about my adventures in desk-envy in the planner topic. Noticing, for instance, whenever the actual surface of the desk emerges and reminds me what color it is. Planner does serve as calendar, yes. The theory (and it's only a theory) is that cardfile and planner are on the desk and suffice for me, knowing my dh has his own calendar.

(((trissie))) that is so hard when it's not your family, but you keep having to deal with the fallout. I hope that your dh has learned at least to hold off from signing things until you have looked at them.

We had that high humidity earlier in the week, Kittykatt. It was so weird that I had to keep going back to the bathroom to sponge off with a facecloth, even though I had the air conditioner running, which should have dried the air out.I hope that the weather cooperates for you.

We seem to be missing your storms where I am, helia, but Toronto got walloped by a big one this week. I'm glad that the tornado missed you. Was there a lot of damage?
You asked about my trip: I'm leaving the Monday after Labour Day, so mid-September. I am hoping for better weather this time, My db and his bff have been joking that I bring the rain with me every time I come, and take it away when I leave. It would be nice to sit out in my db's beautiful yard this time.
