Sunday Superlatives

What superlative will you use to describe the day?

Or any other kind of word, come to think of it!

For me there will be church, seaway, ships, chips, and hopefully sun.

Dh is leaving for the first church service (he's the church musician today) with the minister, so I don't have to leave home until 10:15. But the car will have to be ready for a picnic by the water (so jackets, blankets, additional food and beverage to go with the fish & chips) and my walking sticks.

We need gas as well. Just remembered. So I'll have leave a bit earlier. We used to fill up at the general store each weekend but they pulled the gas pumps out over the winter. They've been trying to sell the place for over a decade and a new regulation came in requiring them to replace the tanks, again, so they decided to remove them completely and do the environmental requirements so it wouldn't be a liability against the building when they sell it. So far, they've spent of $80K but hopefully it will make the place sell.

Knees are still very sore. Will do physio before getting dressed.

So how is dh getting to church or is close enough for a walk?

I'm up, s2s, and meds done. Had to get up shortly after 7 for a bad cramp up the front & left of my left leg. Then something bit me on the outside ankle bone and of course it's driving me CRAZY.

Talked to dh quite a while last night. Just about the same time both DS-A and DDIL#2 sent me pictures of dgs2 completely dressed in his 'fall out gear' that we gave him for Christmas. Think he's been afraid to put it all on because he seemed afraid he might then have to go on a real call. This suit is completely like a full fireman's gear and he is just too adorable (there's a superlative) in it! For some reason he has his face scrunched up in both pictures and I had to really look to make sure it was him.

Time for breakfast and coffee and then off to church.

Well, dh and I were so tired last night that we stayed home and had coffee together on the sofa. Well, I had a cup of tea. What the coffee date ended up being in reality was dh talking for about 15 minutes - and then falling asleep. LOL! No kidding. He's still jetlagging and pushes himself hard.

Engineering School Ramblings: If you want to know the engineering professor's opinion, I can ask dh. He would likely say the top school for a certain engineering discipline depends on the type of engineering, and he's mainly looking at schools from a research point of view - b/c that is most of what he does. I think he'd agree with Harriet that NC (not sure which one?) is good as is Rochester Tech. Other schools: Minnesota has a very strong chemical engineering program and Univ. of Illinois' civil engineering has been ranked the top 3 nationally since I was a child. Of course, dh would recommend UMich as an all around top notch engineering school - and I have to make a plug for it too. Ds is really thriving in all areas of life, and his education has been broad as well as deep. He's gotten some excellent summer internships - with Microsoft this summer. It is ranked among the top 10 nationally in most engineering fields, top 5 in some. It is respected enough that grads who do well can get into MIT, Stanford, etc. for grad school - if that is important. In fact, dh is losing an outstanding undergrad currently working in his lab to MIT for a PhD program next year. Dh just couldn't compete with that name. Also, I can personally vouche for the fact that UM has some great engineering professors! --Not just dh but also Mr. skiing friend and others I know personally too. Stanford is another school dh loses grad students to. I don't know the environment at MIT or Stanford. UC Berkeley is also very highly ranked, as is Univ. Illinois - and Georgia Tech where a cyber-nephew here is finishing up studies. UTexas Austin is strong too. Dee, if dgs15 is interested in Comp. Sci., Carnegie Mellon is excellent as are some of the Ivies, interestingly. And dh has a colleague at AZ state in Phoenix and they do good research in his field. There are also some small engineering undergrad-only private schools that are really good, like Rose Hulman in IN and Harvey Mudd in California. Probably more than anyone wants to know. LOL! This is a topic discussed in this house a fair bit, though dh mainly knows about his own very specific area - and he treats rankings with a grain of salt. Still, there is something to a reputation and a name that can help with future grad schools and/or connections for jobs. $$ can be an issue as some are very expensive. In fact, I think UM is the most expensive public university in the country. Out-of-state tuition must be high.

Remarkably beautiful morning here. EPL team not perfoming well, however. Highly disappointing.

Dee: The minister swung by and gave him a ride. He lives about 10 minutes from here and we are (sort-of) on the way. I have to go get him (so may as well go to church) because the minister isn't coming home after services.

I've s2s and done my physio. Knees are worse (this seems to be a pattern I'm hoping will reverse - ice helps a little and physio doesn't hurt much while I'm doing it but my knees are worse after.)

Will make up some cut veggies for my lunch and then head off in the car. Have checked gas prices and the best is actually just 15 minutes past the church and I have enough to get that far. I hope. I should have enough for 100 km and I'm only going 50.

EPL team is being torn apart. In keeping with the theme, I could say I am devastated. However, it's just a game. And it's still a gorgeous morning.

Knees - gee, these are not good knee stories, guys! Hoping everyone feels better soon.

Prom was a success. The overriding disappointment I heard was that the music was mostly rap or hard-driving rock - not the girl's first choice for an evening for which they had spent all afternoon dressing up like Disney princesses, no. I'm not sure how anyone got the bright idea to hire these particular djs, who were not prepared to play slow or romantic songs. (Pouting girls) But other than that, all reports were just FABulous. Dd said almost all the other girls were in long, romantic dresses, too (her biggest question mark). The theme was "A Night in Paris", and the students got that message but the djs somehow did not.

Three different mothers of the group took photos. Dd's young man's mother had to do a last minute seam repair in his tux, missing her chance for photos, so others will share. She gave dd a present of her initial, written in faux pearls. One boy in the group was "stag", so dd and another girl stood with him in between for his photo and gave permission to tell his prom story any way he wanted in future years, lol.

The boy who knew how to get to the restaurant for pre-prom meal, and was supposed to be leading the mini caravan, sped through a yellow light and lost everyone behind him. (men start young with that, don't they? ) His date was livid, and spent the rest of the trip to the restaurant on her cell phone guiding the other girls, who were telling their dates the directions. He was in big trouble!

Dd got home at 11:30, so kudos to the two of them for not giving her Daddy a stroke.

We've already been to rehearsal this a.m. Church will be up next. And then possibly a nap, since we all stayed up late hearing stories from dd and the young man last night.

Oh, sorry. EPL is English Premier League.....what we call "soccer" in North America, and is known as football in the rest of the world. I'm sad for my favorite team, but am watching another game now involving teams I don't care about. Actually, my son-in-law, who is from the UK, is a lifelong fan of one of them.
about the music at the prom. Poor girls. But I'll bet the young men were happier about the music choices. Glad your dd enjoyed herself and her daddy is still okay.
