Groundhog Thursday PWYC

Post by Twins' Mom »

What are the repetitive jobs that keep your household going? The ones you do each and every day that keep the household looking its best? For me, it may be straightening up our great room - straightening cushions and pillows, picking up left behind shoes, tucking charging cords away. I know when someone walks it, the room is presentable. Or wiping kitchen counters and a once a day clearing and put away of debris, papers and clean dishes.

For habits that use the power of repetition to keep your home spiffed up.

For me, my first repetitive chore was bed making. The older I get the more important it is for stopping me from going back to bed some days! (Wearing shoes adds to that as well.) Dh often stays in bed long after I leave and bed-making is now automatic for him as well.

My other is emptying the dishwasher and/or dish drainer (we only run the dishwasher every second day) in the four minutes my tea takes to steep in the morning.

Oh, and hanging my keys on the hook in the front hall closet.

Aside from these, I wouldn't say anything else is automatic, they may happen very regularly but they are not automatic.

It is snowing again here. Just an inch is expected but it is another grey day. It is to get extremely cold overnight and tomorrow and Saturday will have sun but also be so cold and windy I may not go out. The apartment buildings create a wind-tunnel so it is almost always very windy here, so just the idea of stepping outside can be hard to follow through on because it includes the acceptance of wind so strong it may be hard to walk back up the driveway. Even if I know the wind will be manageable for the rest of the walk, I also know I have to walk back up the driveway, body bent against the wind, hand on my head to hold onto my hat.

All that to say, I should try and get out today when it will only be breezy and not too cold, rather than windy and very cold.

I'm up and dressed by 9. Having that alarm set daily seems to be helping. For the first week I managed it only on days I was picking up dgs. Now I'm ready to go by 9 over half the days.

I had a lousy sleep last night, up 2x and woken 3 other times by arthritis pain over 6.5 hours. I dozed a bit until 6:30 but mostly just let my body relax, my mind was already up and racing.

And appropriately for Groundhog day, it's raining again, I'm afraid. .The sun comes out tomorrow and supposedly we're without rain for the weekend, so that's something to look forward to.

I have a workout at two today and I'm meeting dh for dinner tonight at the favorite restaurant at 5:30. In between, I need to polish up the long delayed article that I want to email off. And I need to pull myself out of the rabbit hole I'm been favoring

I need to go "Groundhog Day" and do all those routines!

Harmony: I have the Turbo beater head. Turbo refers to the fact that a turbine spins the beater bar so there is no electric motor in the head. My version of the vacuum has no power to the wand. I knew that when I bought it but back then I had only one carpet with a very low pile so this beater head worked fine. Now I have mid-pile area rugs and dh has long hair which is adding to the hair that builds up weekly. Lately I've switched back to the straight suction head for all the apartment except the living room and dining rooms, to minimize the amount of hair I need to cut off the beater bar each week.

I'll have another go at fixing the head; in the meantime, there are cheap options available from Amazon. The one I have now has been replaced by Miele and the new one is harder to clean, so I'm not tempted at all to buy it. I have a ton of filters and bags so I need to keep using this until they are used up and then consider buying a different vacuum if the cheap turbo head doesn't work.

Just ordered my night-time face cream (2x the US price but if I ship to the border and cross to get it, I may as well just pay the higher price.) And dh just called out that the order of newsletters from Staples printing is ready for pickup. So that's another step done in the prep for the AGM. That was one of the things that bothered me when I was awake in the night.

It seems like almost every day is Groundhog day around here. The only difference being that my older brother's birthday is Feb. 2. He died in January of 1968.

Almost every day I empty the dishwasher. These days I also scoop the litter boxes, now that I use clumping kitty litter. I usually sweep and most days I also mop. Bathroom to bedroom. I also get the worst spots in the kitchen and living room.

I go to knitting to get me out of the house on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Today dh needs me to help bleed the brake lines on a car he's got on the hoist. I can go after that.

The sun just came out, so I guess spring will start on March 20th. We have had overcast days with rain and very little snow this year. I think ice has been more of an issue this winter than snow.

Supper will be sausages, onions and peppers with a yam/sweet potato on the side for dh.
Dishes never stop.
Laundry never stops.
Litter boxes never stop.
Paper never stops.

Whoa! On my computer this morning rather than the phone. On my phone, I've had to modify the color I selected; I didn't realize that the page as seen on computer offered so many more. I just clicked on the right one, and it was actually the right one; I didn't have to go back and modify it.

Anyhow, good morning! Laundry is the big Groundhog Day task over here. Bedmaking is quick, and I don't clean the bathroom nearly as often as I should, but my minimal wardrobe means I need to keep up on the wash.

We have sun here, so the groundhog saw its shadow. Six more weeks of winter; as Cathy points out, we have six more weeks of winter every year, groundhog or no. :)

I'm sorry you lost your brother so young, Cathy. It's good that you remember him on his birthday.

Really dragging this morning for no good reason. I am hoping a cup of Lapsang Souchong will help with that. The smoky taste is like sitting by a warm fire. Which might put me to sleep, but this warm fire has caffeine. ;)

Nothing much on the agenda today other than taking DC to school.

Finished this month's book club book last night: Legends and Lattes, about an orc who quits adventuring to open up a café. It was cute, and it was good to read about a character following her dream. Speaking of dreams, I should veer away from the eyes-shut kind of dreams and towards my dream of a company-ready house! Have a good one, everybody!

Good Morning!

We are finally at the end of this multiple day/night below freezing temperature. It will be 48F later today. However, late yesterday we received enough moisture to cover everything with ice. So, at 6am this morning the school called letting us know that school is cancelled. Wait! I said that wrong.... school is not cancelled, but it is a remote learning day.... whatever that means. I suspect they use that description so they can count it as a regular school day instead of increment weather day. DD11 has no schoolwork to do today so how can it be considered a learning day? I love the teachers & administration in our little school but IMHO our public education system needs a serious overall. I could go on for days discussing the things I would like to see changed.

DH has an appointment with our family doctor (Dr K) this morning to get the results of his ultrasound. I am continually impressed with Dr K. I have not always appreciated his ways (he is against eating meat) and I have questioned his advice a few times. Dr K doesn't mind bucking the medical system in some ways. Years ago Dr K tested us for Vit D levels and started us on prescription Vit D. He checks our Vit D level routinely as part of the ongoing monitoring he does. I had never heard of doing that and our previous family doctor thought it was not necessary. Now we are seeing multiple studies proving Vit D is vital to our health and plays a significant role in covid.

In my hourly schedule I have a room assigned to each hour. This fits nicely with my 250 steps per hour goal. It takes me about 3 minutes per room to keep it in company ready status. Most times that 3 minutes also results in meeting the 250 steps. I have a few items that I routinely do in each room during those 3 minutes daily - PUPA (pick up put away), wipe horizontal surfaces, and vacuum are done in all rooms. The bathrooms also have swish/swipe toilet & tub/shower. Bedrooms include making beds. The kitchen includes sink & wiping appliances.

I have about two hours before I need to leave. I've finished a.m. routine, except for stretching which I will do at my workout. (And honestly, I usually don't get to it.)

I'm going to pull up the article I wrote awhile back and proof - it will go to Greene Co., Tenn. for there genealogy society publication in May

The dog only got one lap - the rain continues.
