Most maples usually have easily identifiable palmate leaves (with a few exceptions, such as Acer carpinifolium, Acer laurinum, and Acer negundo) and all share distinctive winged fruits. The closest relative of the maples is the small east Asian genus Dipteronia, followed by the more widespread genus Aesculus (buckeyes and horse-chestnuts). Maple syrup is made from the sap of some maple species. It is one of the most common genera of trees in Asia. Many maple species are grown in gardens where they are valued for their autumn colour and often decorative foliage, some also for their attractive flowers, fruit, or bark.

A maple leaf appears on the coat of arms of Canada, and is on the Canadian flag. The maple is a common symbol of strength and endurance and has been chosen as the national tree of Canada. Maple leaves are traditionally an important part of Canadian Forces military regalia, for example, the military rank insignia for generals use maple leaf symbols. There are 10 species naturally growing in the country, with at least one in each province. Although the idea of the tree as a national symbol originally hailed from the province of Quebec where the sugar maple is significant, today's arboreal emblem of Canada rather refers to a generic maple. The design on the flag is an eleven-point stylization modeled after a sugar maple leaf (which normally bears 23 points).

Happy Monday!

Yikes about the car breaks, that looks like an expensive repair, Dogged :-(
helian, I was thinking, as member of the academia, it might be better if your husband travels with a forensically cleansed computer and phone - some universities even offer them on loan for their travelling faculty members.

Working from home today, as I am driving Terri to and from school. Plus I have two major tasks that I need to work on without constant interruption, and I never get that in the office. Housework will have to be squeezed in somehow - I am facing major overtime tomorrow (possibly up to two hours), so nothing will get done then. I am kinda fed up with overtime, I've been doing a lot of it lately and it's unpaid. I mean, I don't mind going above and beyond, because I have strong work ethics, but I do mind very much having to work extra because somebody else is irresponsible, lazy and incompetent. But enough of my rant!
I took yesterday off. Not all housework, of course, but I felt like rebelling against the lists and everything. Well, it didn't do me all that good, so I don't think I will be repeating that next weekend :-) But maybe I could/should plan the week so that I would earn a free Sunday (afternoon)! I used to have them, before kids. Not in many years :-(

Trissie, I hear you! In his previous job, my son would go in for 2-4 hours on Sunday afternoon, just to prepare for the week ahead, for the same reason as your rant. There were statutory deadlines for response in many cases. I don't think I hear you talk about the children's grandparents. Are they living? Do they have any interest in the kids? Like taking them for a weekend so you can have a date with your husband without responsibilities?
Thanks for the 🍁. It's sap/ syrup season here. We have friends who do it. I used to help now and then. They would boil it right in the forest, using dead, downed logs for fuel in a brick stove. Yum, I think I'll have pancakes for breakfast.

Maple syrup pancakes sound like a lovely treat, gma! :D

As to my kids' grandparents, both sets are alive (well my biological father's dead, but my mother has been with my stepfather for over twenty years).
My husbands's parents live over hundred miles away and they don't travel, like, at all - they used to come once a year, but haven't been here since before DBD was born. MIL is in early stages of dementia/Alzheimmer, FIL has his set of illnesses, but they didn't really babysit even for their local daughter (DNiece is 15).
My mother lives 25 minutes away, my stepdad drives, but she's interested in being hosted and talking about herself. If there's a major emergency, they will come forward, but it better not happen more than once or twice a year. I know I did enable her by being too understanding when she had all those reasons why she couldn't even see her grandchildren, but as my friend bluntly told me - she wasn't too much into raising her own kids (basically my grandparents raised me and I raised my sister), so why should she be into raising her grandkids?
So it's always been me and DH. And we do fine most of the time, and I try not to be bitter about it, because that's not going to change anything.

Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for the start. Is this extra overtime a seasonal thing due to the upcoming financial year end / start of the new financial year? Could you make a d prioritise an "appointment" with yourself for an hour or two off, the same way you would make an appointment for a meeting or to take the DKids to a medical appointment?

Gma, your friends' maple syrup sounds dangerous delicious!

DH has left for the office, and I have had two cats (Freddie and Jude) sitting on me and demanding biscuit, so it's been physically in impossible to get up or even look at my phone I til now! I have a"free" day, a d the forecast is dry and a pleasant 14C, so I would like to start the 6 monthly task of flushing the drainage channels in the windows, piling the hi ges and greasing the contract points. And yes, it's as tedious as it sounds! I could also "get ahead" of myself and give the windows and cladding a clean at the same time. Hmmm, maybe do the upstairs windows today (to take advantage of DH not being in the spare room!) and downstairs tomorrow? That might be the best use of time. I'm expecting a parcel (again!) so need to be around for that. I also need to put soda crystals down the outside drains, but that can be done any time. What an exciting life I lead! Being realistic, it's a good idea to tackle these tasks this week, as the weather is kind so far , and it's also a relatively quiet week for me - next week has more appointments. Time to get up! :D

Pick up my footprints! (Thank you, RRose!) What does this mean specifically for me? 0ff the top of my head: PUPA things out of place before I go to bed, PUPA tools I have used to do the housework, wipe down kitchen surfaces when I've finished there. Put my breakfast bowl and mug in DW. In other words, pick after myself!
Make list of outstanding jobs on the house and send to Handyman A. DF PM, who has been mentoring him through some difficult turns his life has taken, thinks he may be ready to start some jobs again. (If he doesn't reply in a reasonable time, or doesn't want to do anything, then I'll look for someone else, but I would prefer not to do that). Off the top of my head, clean gutters and the swan neck on the downpipes where "stuff" tends to accumulate, clean cladding back and front and downpipes, and short return wall as well. Replace the bit of mortar that's fallen out of the edge of the roof (I think its called the verge?) , fix dripping kitchen tap ( new washer?), sort out cabinet that wobbles, fix garage guttering that's loose at one end and bending down. More as I think of them? 😀 ( Waiting for a reply)
Take up and hem those thick winter curtains for the kitchen
Book eye test for me
Find picture hanging equipment for DH
Sort prints and put in albums (this will probably be an activity to do on wet days!) WIP
Think about setting up Guardianship for F,J and M - looked on Cats' Protection, I need their microchip numbers, approximate DOB, colour and markings and useful information about them. Bookmark link with local recommended solicitors (also ask DF CW?)
Change health centres to the one nearest us? On hold ATM , but I'll leave it on my list so I don't forget.

Good morning!
trissie ~ thanks for the start! Ikwym about the list thing. Sometimes, you just have to let yourself breathe. Sorry other people's laxity causes you more burden that takes away from your family. How frustrating. As far as family, it sounds like you and Dh have surrounded yourself with good friends for family.
Gma ~ mmm... pancakes! That's usually what Li'l H asks for Sunday night dinner. Well.. there also has to be bacon.
kitty ~ good for you on keeping up with mundane maintenance. It's so easy to put those things off when things are running "okay." Our HVAC guys have been telling us for 10 years - okay.. maybe 5 - that we need a new hot water heater. This year IS the year!
L.Ann ~ wow... you've been through your beds already? Hats off!

Yesterday -- had a fun time with Li'l H watching our men's college basketball team play in March Madness. She and G had all kinds of "comments" as they didn't do well - and lost. Lots of popcorn was consumed. She had requested homemade bread, so we had "bread & butter, sugar & cinnamon" for dessert. I did make her eat some eggs & yogurt.
Today -- just house stuff - me stuff.

Okies.. off to Flybys. QT up first!
