Palm Sunday is the Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four canonical Gospels. Its name originates from the palm branches waved by the crowd to greet and honor Jesus Christ as he entered the city. Palm Sunday marks the first day of Holy Week; in Western Christianity, this is the beginning of the last week of the solemn season of Lent, preceding Eastertide,while in Eastern Christianity, Holy Week commences after the conclusion of Great Lent.

Good morning everyone and happy Sunday! Happy Palm Sunday to those who celebrate.

Having been privy this year to some of the discussions and planning behind the scenes for our Palm Sunday service, it isn't quite a smooth as the Wikipedia article! We have no incumbent ATM, so the poor lady Inc jarge of organising the service has been met with"help" from all angles. Do we have a procession? Some people emphatically said "yes" maybe getting confused with Candlemas, or thinking back to 30-40 years ago when the congregation was younger. Others said "no"! Are we having a live donkey for the procession? (It would be a great attraction, especially to families, but OTOH, it's probably rather stressful for the donkey, although the Donkey Sanctuary is happy to hire them out for a couple of hours, and then there is the matter of the carpet in the main aisle...) And then, of course, there is the choice of which hymns to have- there's a selection especially for Palm Sunday, and everyone has their favourites. And the organist has put his foot down over some of those!

About the only thing everyone could agree on is that we have a dramatic reading of the Passion instead of a sermon, and, as it's longer than the usual Gospel reading, everyone gets to sit down, instead of standing as usual for the Gospel!

I feel very sorry for S, who has had to wade through all this with great tact, diplomacy and humour!

As far as I know, the end result is going to be: a procession down the main aisle at the beginning of just the priest, acolytes, readers etc with two people going ahead carrying palm branches before laying them at the altar, and everyone else standing in their pews, four hymns that the organist and choir master have chosen between them. one.dramtoc reading of the Gospel, and no donkey!

kittykatt, our service will be similar to yours. No donkey here either! But we do have the children march around the sanctuary - down the center aisle, up the side aisles, down the center aisle again, then to their parents, while we sing the traditional "All Glory laud and honor..." Of course with palms. The passion narrative will be read instead of a sermon.
I am thinking that I will stay home and watch on line, as my foot has had a busy day, going to see mother. I am going to rest it on Sunday as this will be a busy week - my brother is coming on Tuesday, Mother has a hair appointment on Wednesday - he will have to take her. We have services on Thursday, Friday, Easter Vigil on Saturday, and Festival Easter service on Sunday. And my brother is not used to going to church where he lives (he used to, but there was such turmoil in his church that it turned him off). We have to get a few outfits to the NH so mother has something to choose from to wear to Easter church. We have an invitation to Easter dinner, so I only have to make rice pudding, at the request of the hostess

kittykatt, thanks for the start. A donkey would be lovely indeed if any kids are present. Not sure the donkey would have enjoyed it, and of course there are hygiene issues . I hope it all goes well. For many religious events I think every one has expectations and it must be difficult to satisfy all the demands. I just read that each country has their own choices of trees when celebrating Palm Sunday (French page of Wikipedia), but it seems many countries have specific traditions (Wikipedia page in English).

Gma I hope watching the service online is not too much of a disappointment for you.

Mostly sunny morning here, DS6 wants me to help him make an Easter basket, maybe out of of pizza boxes like last year. DS9 wants to type a story about butterflis that he eventually will print and bind or staple like a mini-book.
I'm not sure what I want to get done today. I need some fresh air and relaxation before next week at payroll which might be "interesting" again.

kittykatt, I wholeheartedly agree with the "no donkey" decision! I mean, in the usual congregation, there's gonna be plenty of donkey-attituded people, and that should be enough!
gma, online sermon is a good idea - with the busy week ahead, you don't want to upset that foot! Terri has gotten quite proficient with her crutches - we call them speedsticks, given how she can outrun everybody - but she's young and agile!

Home from church and quickie grocery run. They didn't have any suitable meat for BBQ, so I will have to dig through the freezer and quickly defrost something. Also, there were no red gooseberry trees in either of the garden stores - well one had last two bare-root ones, but they didn't look too healthy. I will keep looking (there's another garden store nearby, but it's only open weekdays), but worse come to worse, we'll buy the potted one in June. But I got strawberries and a mint plant. It really is the time of the year where the garden store bills keep piling

I think a donkey would be very interesting but not very practical for all the reasons others have stated, Kitty. I wonder, are real donkeys used in processions in churches anywhere? I hope it all went well and you're enjoying your Sunday lunch!
I love hearing. about your boys' creative ideas, FFB. How does one make a blanket out of pizza boxes? (No need to explain unless you want to. I'm just curious.)
You must have quite the garden, trissie! WTG getting to church for Palm Sunday.

We are not getting to church for Palm Sunday. I could livestream the service, though, as Gma is doing. We looked at the start times for the 5K run this morning, and my start time is so late, that we couldn't even get ready in time to get to church on time. I'm very sloooow, so my start time is at 8:35 while dh's is at 8 and M's is at 8:20. LOL! Dh will have finished by the time I start. He's considering taking the chip off his bib (so he doesn't get 2 times) and running the course a 2nd time to get in his traditional Sunday 6 mile run.

I'm up drinking coffee before the 5K. We're going to leave in about 35 minutes.

I did not sleep well last night. I lay awake fretting about everything I need to do and wondering how it will all get done. Not getting enough sleep will NOT help me get more done.

But. . . Today is forecast to be sunny with a high close to 60*F! So, I'm going to enjoy the day and make as much progress as I can.

7:30 - 9:45/10-ish OUT to 5K with dh and M
3:30 - 5:30-ish CG2 @ AA's place
6:00 - 9-ish? host Sunday dinner with the Cs, M, and hopefully the girls

I was up earlier than I wanted to be. DD32’s evening meds didn’t set well in her stomach and she woke me up to tell me she didn’t feel well. She fell back to sleep so hopefully she will feel better when she wakes up. Enjoy the services everyone. I have seen a parade through town to the church for Palm Sunday. I think a donkey would work for that. We are doing dancing popcorn this week, helian. It is another vinegar and baking soda experiment. They seem to be a real hit with the preschool crowd and I like them because they don’t involve a lot of “stuff”.

trissie the boys will stay home next week as well, with one day at daycare, like this past week. MrNG is keeping an eye on them the other days, and mostly they get bored and end up fighting... MrNG sometimes drives them to a wooden area or the sea side. I've read that getting bored is actually helpful for creative part of the brain. Then for Easter there is a small chance that inspiration hits us and we do something fun like sleeping in a tent somewhere or spend the weekend somewhere, but since it's only one week away and we don't have much time to make plans, well... Its is indeed the time of the year with gardening expenses. MrNG is taking good care of his seedling nursery. We have many tomato plants, and now the squash and zucchini have started. And yes, we have to wait until May for the real planting to start.

helia I was hoping I wouldn't have to share a pic of past baskets, then I found this website, there must be some equivalent in English : https://fr.wikihow.com/faire-un-panier-en-papier (how to weave a paper basket). I use pizza boxes to have long "ribbons" of sturdy paper. Then I weave the bottom like on this link, and then I weave the sides with cardboard robbons as well or with colored yarn. This morning we made a round base with rectangles darting from the side (like a sun shape with rays spreading out of it on all sides) and I will weave the sides with yarn.

L.Ann sorry for the short night. Oh, the many things you can do with vinegar and baking soda ! We had volcanoes here once, then "rockets" (with a plastic bottle), also bubbly paint... I will google dancing popcorn.
