Re: Winston Apple Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Winston is an English cultivar of domesticated apple which was first named Winter King because of its availability in the winter, but was renamed as Winston in 1944 or in 1945, after Winston Churchill.
It was developed in Berkshire, England, United Kingdom, by crossing the Cox's Orange Pippin with a Worcester Pearmain to get the optimum positive traits from both parents. This was actually what happened. It received the high eating qualities for which the Cox's is notable: a firm white flesh which is also juicy, a little sharp in taste, but well balanced with sweetness and aroma. From the Worcester it took the best part of its horticultural adventures: easy to grow, reliable crop and resistant to many diseases.
In appearance, it is usually conical in shape, medium-sized, a greenish background flushed with much bold red. It is very good in storage; harvested in December it will keep to April, and even improves its taste somewhat by keeping for some time after picking. It is one of the few apple cultivars that are self-fertile, meaning that it can set fruits with its own pollen, and doesn't necessarily need outcross pollination.
It has earned the Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society in 1993. Pick in England mid-October. Use December - April.

I'm in! Thank you for the link, Bama. And thank you for starting us off, trissie.
I am just waiting for the dw to finish. I'll take out the dishes to dry, and put it away and head to bed.

Re: Winston Apple Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. I've eaten Winston apples,.and they are delicious!
Sleep well, Dogged!
I'll keep this short, as the site is acting a bit strange for me this morning, with several different error messages - maybe it's undergoing maintenance?
Yesterday evening I dealt with some paperwork, had a chat with Dneighbour S when I was watering my pansies, and had a little time.working on my dolls house.
Today, we're forecast another beautiful warm sunny day, so I want to make the most of it outside with a good walk through the valley park, and some time in my garden . I also need to do some indoor jobs, especially end of month banking and wrap that parcel for tomorrow, so I can drop it off at our post office in the community shop (our PO is only open Thursday afternoons). DH is going to the office, so I have a day to myself and need to organise it well.

Thursday: County Council elections; DH is PO at our local polling station
Vote!

Laxapet -Jude and Matilda ( if we didn't do it yesterday)
Friday DH: WFH
At home for me
Saturday:
*Text DF E re coffee tomorrow* not this week, as we're doing coffees after church
Sunday: church 9.30 am We are doing the coffees this week
Coffee with DF E ? Not this week
Laxapet Jude and Matilda
Future dates to note: Order my meds
Outstanding deliveries: Mountain Warehouse, Seasalt
Extras:
End of month banking
Wrap that box
Address label
Put by front door ready to drop off at post office tomorrow afternoon
Process those Bramley apples, bag and freeze
Amend Amazon S&S items - TODAY WIP
Digital decluttering- Google Photos for 2024 and 2025
Pick up my footprints
House tasks: clean gutters and the swan neck on the downpipes where "stuff" tends to accumulate, clean cladding back and front and downpipes, and short return wall as well. Replace the bit of mortar that's fallen out of the edge of the roof (I think its called the verge?) , fix dripping kitchen tap ( new washer?), sort out cabinet that wobbles, fix garage guttering that's loose at one end and bending down. More as I think of them? Texted 10/3
and 14/4
If no reply by the end of the month, then definitely look for someone else (DF PM is also starting to become exasperated with his reluctance)
Steps to take to find a replacement: ask friends, look on local sources eg Nextdoor for recommendations
I may have to split the jobs between different people this year if I can't find someone who's good at a variety of skills, so:
For gutter cleaning, Dneighbours R and A used Ben's gutters -are they pleased with the work? Does BG also clean cladding? Do they have a website? Yes
Also The E Gutter Cleaners -they have good reviews
Prepare my "job spec" WIP
Fill in free quote forms for both the above companies
Wait and see the results!
Kitchen tap - DF E has given me the phone number of her plumber . I think DF CW also has a plumber she is happy with?
Garage gutter -probably something for a handyman - text /message a few likely people. Does Dneighbour R2 do handyman type jobs? I know he's done work for Dneighbour R in the past, but that was larger jobs, like laying a path!
Pick a new podiatrist from my "short list"
Book an appointment !
Take up and hem those thick winter curtains for the kitchen
Book eye test for me
Find picture hanging equipment for DH
Sort prints and put in albums (this will probably be an activity to do on wet days!) WIP I am now working on 2024
Think about setting up Guardianship for F,J and M - looked on Cats' Protection, I need their microchip numbers, approximate DOB, colour and markings and useful information about them. Bookmark link with local recommended solicitors (also ask DF CW?)
Change health centres to the one nearest us? On hold ATM , but I'll leave it on my list so I don't forget.

Re: Winston Apple Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Hmm.... I got several error messages getting here this morning too. I hope this posts.
I don't think I've ever had that sort of apple, trissie!
Enjoy the nice weather and a day to yourself, Kitty! Sounds lovely!
Were you cleaning your fridge Smile? Or was it literally taken apart? WTG with your early morning work out!
See you soon, hopefully, Doggedly.
Bama, we're actually generally happy with my mom's experience at this nursing home - so far. It has a very nice ambience, more homey and less institutional than her previous one. The cafeteria uses real dinnerware (ceramic, not plastic) and glass glasses with cloth napkins at each meal, for example. And they have activities scheduled for the residents every day which apparently my mom likes - as much as she can like anything. She has a large private room with lots of windows, much nicer than the previous facility. However -- I'm just not sure their medical capabilities are as high as the previous one. She was previously in a skilled nursing facility and this one is not labelled such, though there is a registered nurse on duty 24/7 and a bunch of med techs.
I've decided not to visit Mom today; I think it makes me feel a little depressed when I go every day. I will check on the urine sample -- and on the blood tests. Now, I'm starting to wonder if the blood was even taken for that.
Today, I have a dental appointment at 8:10. After that, I think I'll go straight to a coffee shop and prep for class. Then, I'll go to the grocery store and get that done. Finishing the morning routine, getting clean sheets on the bed, a little laundry, lunch - and I'll be otd to payroll around 1 - unless I can park at the school, in which case it will be more like 1:15. Class 1:30 - 3:30 and then home. After work, I'm going to try to force myself to go for a jog. It's perfect weather. I'm usually tired after work and that makes it more difficult to get out and jog. I'm going to check on a couple things for Mom, work on the neurologist appointment and dental practice application. Dinner will be lemon pasta with grilled chicken and a veggie, still TBD.

Laundry
Doggy walk /training
