Re: Gabriel Fauré Friday @ TDD - C&C
Gabriel Urbain Fauré (12 May 1845 – 4 November 1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the foremost French composers of his generation, and his musical style influenced many 20th-century composers. Among his best-known works are his Pavane, Requiem, Sicilienne, nocturnes for piano and the songs "Après un rêve" and "Clair de lune". Although his best-known and most accessible compositions are generally his earlier ones, Fauré composed many of his most highly regarded works in his later years, in a more harmonically and melodically complex style.
Fauré was born into a cultured but not especially musical family. His talent became clear when he was a young boy. At the age of nine, he was sent to the École Niedermeyer music college in Paris, where he was trained to be a church organist and choirmaster. Among his teachers was Camille Saint-Saëns, who became a lifelong friend. After graduating from the college in 1865, Fauré earned a modest living as an organist and teacher, leaving him little time for composition. When he became successful in his middle age, holding the important posts of organist of the Église de la Madeleine and director of the Paris Conservatoire, he still lacked time for composing; he retreated to the countryside in the summer holidays to concentrate on composition. By his last years, he was recognised in France as the leading French composer of his day. An unprecedented national musical tribute was held for him in Paris in 1922, headed by the president of the French Republic. Outside France, Fauré's music took decades to become widely accepted, except in Britain, where he had many admirers during his lifetime.
Fauré's music has been described as linking the end of Romanticism with the modernism of the second quarter of the 20th century. When he was born, Chopin was still composing, and by the time of Fauré's death, jazz and the atonal music of the Second Viennese School were being heard. The Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, which describes him as the most advanced composer of his generation in France, notes that his harmonic and melodic innovations influenced the teaching of harmony for later generations. During the last twenty years of his life, he suffered from increasing deafness. In contrast with the charm of his earlier music, his works from this period are sometimes elusive and withdrawn in character, and at other times turbulent and impassioned.
Not the Claire de lune you'd been thinking (that one is Debussy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10snKfsyahs

Re: Gabriel Fauré Friday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning Trissie and thank you for another interesting start. I'm familiar with Fauré's requiem, as DH has sung in a production, but the rest is new to me.
Helian, I'm glad your DH is back safely. Will he be much affected by the time change, or does he adapt quickly?
Bama, thank you for sharing. My vet doesn't recommend dental treats, as a cat would have to eat quite a lot to get the benefit, and as a treat they are almost certainly high calorie and relatively low nutritional value. There is a complete dental food available, but Matilda has some (very mild) food sensitivities, and we don't want to risk triggering them. (Warning of TMI: since we switched her diet to a GI one, she has almost completely stopped "scooting" across the carpet on her behind .) So, once she's recovered from her surgery, I'll probably try the finger toothbrush, without the toothpaste to begin with, and just touching her mouth, and then gradually build up and add in the toothpaste . There's a four week "course " with video that shows you how to do it (I am slightly sceptical of this transferring to real life, but we shall see!). There's also product called "plaque off" made from dried seaweed, and supposedly inert. I've used it on a cat with food sensitivities before and she was ok. It's not as good as tooth cleaning, but much better than nothing. There's also stuff to put in the water, but I'm worried that if Jude doesn't like the taste, then she would just refuse to drink it, (she's stubborn that way!) which would be dangerous, especially as she prefers to eat mostly dried food. Interestingly, cats who hunt a lot tend to have better teeth as when they crunch on bones and feathers that helps clean their teeth. But I don't want to encourage Matilda to slaughter the local wildlife!
Up and out early for my nurse appointment at the health centre. I'll park at the church, which is about a 20 minute walk away, but it's a nice day and Ill hopefully be able to run some errands.

Re: Gabriel Fauré Friday @ TDD - C&C
Friday's list:
2 nurse appointments for me - one at 9.40 (I think - they keep texting me and changing the time
) and the other at ?? (It would be sensible to have them one after the other, bit they don't seem to work that way
. I'll take a good book with me.
)
Remember to take the printout of DH's email, so I can pick up DH's shoes from Mountain Warehouse
M&S Foodhall - chocolates for vet
Do I need anything else while I'm there?
Pick out outfit for this evening
Fold laundry and PA
Flea control F, J, M
Brush F
Clean shoes
Polish bag
Delicate / wool wash?
Feed kitties before we leave
6.45 pm leave for meal out with DH's amateur dramatic society committee members
Before bed -Matilda's anti inflammatory
Can I do something in my garden?

Re: Gabriel Fauré Friday @ TDD - C&C
Back home again after a successful nurse appointment (she condensed everything into about an appointment and a half, as the next patient hadn't turned up, and as my asthma is currently well controlled, she didn't want to change anything, and I didn't have any other concerns.) I've picked up DH's shoes -he was very happy- and also chocolates and a card for the vet. I did have a look in M&S, but their stock still has numerous random gaps due to the cyber attack, so now they've reinstated online shopping I'll buy the underwear I need from them online.
I'm out in my garden now. It's clouded over, but still dry so far, and the threatened thunderstorms have so far failed to materialise. I would like, if possible, to get laundry folded and PA before we leave this event, but that depends on what time DH finishes in the spare room today (he's WFH today). I'm also going to need another shower after an afternoon's gardening, so that's going to take priority!

Re: Gabriel Fauré Friday @ TDD - C&C
Early in the day here. I washed my sheets yesterday, put the bottom one on, crawled under a blanket at 6pm, and slept almost 2 hours
Was up for about 90 minutes ( don't know what I did) and went back to sleep, so altogether I've had about 10 1/2 hours of sleep. Much needed, but my joints are stiff this morning!
Many surfaces are fully cluttered, but I think I'll start with some floors and eat breakfast later. Then think about my day
Which I know will include lunch with Mom and visiting dfBS in the hospital.
Kittykatt, I'm happy that your asthma is stable
Trissie, I've loved the composers this week.

Oh, I didn't know M&S went through a cyber attack, kittykatt!
So sorry about DDoggie, gma! How is your mom taking it?
Never made it here yesterday. I had about an hour after work at home to get things done and then I went to a work-related evening event (my mom was babysitting). It was fun! I wish I was getting more business invitations - but I generally only work "inhouse" and don't meet contractors or clients who would invite me anywhere. Back when I was an investment fund manager, working with multiple banks and basically every big law firm in the city, I'd be getting so many invitations that I had to carefully select what was worth attending and what was not (concerts and theatre were always a go
somebody asked yesterday - I used to play piano, and combined with the way music is taught here (especially in high school a broader knowledge of composers and music styles in required), I am well versed with classical music, even if I don't usually listen to it. I like Chopin and Debussy (wrong letters there), and Tchaikovsky, and Dvorak's Largo from New World symphony will never not bring tears in my eyes:

and I will never not feel a great love for my country when listening to Smetana's Moldau from My country:

and quite a few others. so... you probably could say I enjoy classical music!

Re: Gabriel Fauré Friday @ TDD - C&C
Kitty, dh purposefully keeps his body as much on US (Eastern) time as he can when traveling. --Though, admittedly that's not too much while in Japan. I think he was getting up at 2/3 a.m. Japan time and going to bed as soon after an early dinner as possibe. He keeps his trips as short as possible, so he'll switch back pretty quickly. WTG on the successful errands and time in your garden!
trissie, I know I played some Faure piano pieces. I liked him - and Debussy - a lot. And Chopin.
I'm glad you got some good rest, Gma.
I slept pretty well last night, so I'm feeling better rested this morning. I'm drinking coffee and getting ready for my day.
Today: I'm going to stop by the school early again to drop off more books I found yesterday. I need to deposit some checks I found - and had forgotten about, like reimbursement for moving my mom up here. I guess that's my reward for tackling the piles in the study. That and I found my Hebrew textbook from the earlier classes I took at the big Uni. LOL! I hope to spend some time in a coffee shop with dh working on exam prep. A walk this afternoon would be good -- and finishing the piles.

Thanks as always, trissie. Smetana’s Moldau was a class favorite in my music class, and I still listen to it. Feels like I’m riding the river.
Kittykatt, cats are so much harder than dogs. Hope they get used to the toothbrush. I’m glad the nurse appointments went well and are over with.
(((Gma)))
Helia, yay to found money as an incentive to keep at the piles.
I’m up and ready to tackle the daily challenges…
