The European turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur) is a threatened or vulnerable member of the bird family Columbidae, the doves and pigeons. It breeds over a wide area of the south western Palearctic including north Africa but migrates to northern sub-Saharan Africa to winter.
The Turtle Dove is a dainty dove, much smaller and darker than the Collared Dove – slightly larger than a Blackbird. Its upperparts are distinctively mottled with chestnut and black, and its black tail has a white edge.
Turtle Doves have been used as a symbol of love and devotion throughout history. Despite being most famous for their mention in the ‘12 Days of Christmas’ carol, these birds are a summer visitor and only visit the UK from mid-April to end of August. Each year, UK-breeding Turtle Doves travel up to 3,000 miles each way to and from West Africa.
The Turtle Dove’s gentle purr is a sound of summer, and Its iconic purring ‘turr turr’ call is where the ‘Turtle’ name came from, but it has become increasingly rare following rapid and sustained population declines. One cause of the decline is thought to be lack of seed and grain during the breeding season, resulting in a much shorter breeder season with fewer nesting attempts.

Gma, so glad your DMum did, in fact, have a lovely day, even though you've had to deal with her misremembering things as well. I hope you manage an uninterrupted night's sleep.
Today is supposed to start getting hotter again, so I need to get the outside jobs done either early, before Matilda's appointment, or later this evening when it's cooled down a bit. So I'll take Freddie out and do a little in my garden first thing, and walk later. The housework can be done during the heat of the day, as I'll be inside.

Sort prints and put in albums (this will probably be an activity to do on wet days!) WIP I am now working on 2024

Things that need to happen at home before DH retires!
Reorganise office (DH wants a new to him desk that work is getting rid of. Can I empty the tallboy and move it into the bedroom? Remember to measure at its widest point to see if it will fit!
More decluttering in bedroom - drawers under the bed, my clothes (a continuous process!)
Kitchen - measure for fridge, measure where bins are going to go. Order new fridge. Move freezer to where current fridge is now? Go through cubby hole which houses miscellaneous "stuff", including the surplus from my dolls house project (this is on a pause now until the winter, but I have all the pieces I need, ... and a lot of surplus!
Get it all out and divide into lots. WIP
Do I have enough boxes and bubble wrap? I think so
Clean everything so it looks its best and photograph.
Write description and list on eBay. Remember to state we are a smoke free home.I can do most of this this one box at a time, so it isn't overwhelming .
Once the boxes are sealed and wrapped and labelled with the contents, I can store them in the garage.
Decide what is going back in cubby hole - gardening trug? Extension cable, spare boxes of cat food? Will my folding chair fit? Yes

You’ve sent me on a dove chase. I didn’t realize there were so many types of dove. We have several kinds on our bird feeders. Seems the most common in our area is the mourning dove. We also have a smaller variety which I used to think were babies but they’ve never grown, which is why I think they must be a different type. Sharing the link here so I will remember to look at the feeders in the daylight and see what kinds of birds I have. I’ll see you in 8 or so hours.

Happy Tuesday!
We're still here, having a relaxing morning. It's raining both here and at the cottage, so no real hurry, eventhough I would like to leave after lunch.
We have turtledoves in our garden, kittykatt! They are rather loud, especially when they are "at it" (yes, we've had the dubious pleasure of that happening just outside the living room window at dinnertime one year

The kids complained it was too tomato-ey, so next time I will use less tomato sauce, and it was kinda hard to stirr in the spaghetti (though that might have been due to me using my 3.5 quart slow cooker), so maybe I would break them in thirds next time. But it was otherwise good and there were no leftovers and DBD and DH had (lots of) seconds, so it's a keeper

I don't know if I've ever seen a turtle dove. I grew up to the melancholy coo of mourning doves in summer. Now, here in Michigan, that call brings me back to those childhood summer days every time I hear it.
When we've visited the Netherlands, I've noticed the doves there are enormous!! They're almost the size of chickens! Their call is distinct and different from mourning doves - less mournful.
The kids can literally learn about "the birds and the bees" trissie!
I think it's healthy to start learning about it in nature. Glad you're having a relaxing morning.
I hope L Ann is safely off on her travels today!
Now I'm curious what sort of small doves you have in your area, Bama. Are you traveling today?

The writer's workshop last night was interesting and helpful. I'm not aiming to write a publishable book; I'm writing to process the hard things that happened THAT year, mainly the trial and its aftermath. It was nice to see dd27. I got home very tired a little after 8 pm. Dh and I chatted. I'm now ready to get the transcript of the trial and start looking through it. It is very long, about 1,000 pages. I think it would cost $1K; dh has said that's fine. Just do it. People have said vastly different things about what happened at the trial -- or ignored certain things that came to light during it. Dh and S were there for most of it. Dh gave me updates on arguments for both sides as he understood them. Perhaps everyone just sees what they want to see in it? I want to see the facts for myself. I might quote some of it in my writing. I might put transcripts of some emails I received in my writing too. . .
Today: The KS2J gathering is happening at 8:15 this morning. I'd like to get in a jog afterward. This afternoon, I need to procure groceries for the CG2 cookout this evening, the fifth evening event in a row this week. The fourth social eating event in 5 days. LOL! I'm ready for a quiet evening, but that won't happen for a while -- traveling tomorrow until 8 pm (11 pm Michigan time) and then the conference through Saturday a.m. with evening sessions. Perhaps we could skip an evening session? Well, I'll be on vacation starting tomorrow, so that should help. Time with my kids is different!

Trissie, I had to smile at the thought of the doves perpetuating their species when you were all having lunch. I'm sure you were able to take the inevitable questions in your stride.
Helian, I think writing could be a very good way to process your thoughts and feelings about the trial. I'm going to confess my first thoughts were: that's a lot of money for the transcript, but it *would* be the "official" and correct version, and hopefully will be helpful to you and the healing process. Also, our health, especially our mental health is priceless.
Back from the vets with Matilda. Her mouth has healed very well from the surgery. We went through her bloods and neurological exam results again, and the conclusion everyone has come to so far, is that her seizure last week is most likely either a random one off occurrence , due to her age and test results, or(again doe to her age and test results ) possibly the start of ideopathic epilepsy, but, fortunately , very, very unlikely to be an indicator of anything sinister. If she has another seizure, then they'll probably refer her for an MRI, but it's highly likely that nothing untoward will show up on that either. (She is in the exact middle of the age range when so called ideopathic epilepsy can start in cats, when all the tests and scans come back normal. And we know her age is accurate to within a month or so, as she was rescued as a kitten.)
I've taken Fred out and had a good session.in my front garden this morning, topping up the bark, and DH made very nice ham and tomato sandwiches for lunch. Oh, and we've bought a new fridge in the Amazon Prime day sale - we picked it out a few weeks ago, and I kept it in my basket waiting to see if it would go down in price. And it did! They'll deliver sometime on Friday (it's easy to ensure one of us is home, so I dont see any point paying for a timed delivery) and also take away the old one, so that's one less thing to think about. Although I am going to need to reorganise that part of the kitchen between now and then. Now, I really need to start the housework!

Reorganise office (DH wants a new to him desk that work is getting rid of. Can I empty the tallboy and move it into the bedroom? Remember to measure at its widest point to see if it will fit!
More decluttering in bedroom - drawers under the bed, my clothes (a continuous process!)
Kitchen - measure for fridge, measure where bins are going to go. Order new fridge. Move freezer to where current fridge is now? Go through cubby hole which houses miscellaneous "stuff", including the surplus from my dolls house project (this is on a pause now until the winter, but I have all the pieces I need, ... and a lot of surplus!
Get it all out and divide into lots. WIP
Do I have enough boxes and bubble wrap? I think so
Clean everything so it looks its best and photograph.
Write description and list on eBay. Remember to state we are a smoke free home.I can do most of this this one box at a time, so it isn't overwhelming .
Once the boxes are sealed and wrapped and labelled with the contents, I can store them in the garage.
Decide what is going back in cubby hole - gardening trug? Extension cable, spare boxes of cat food? Will my folding chair fit? Yes
