Claudius Ptolemy ( c. 100 – 160s/170s AD),better known mononymously as Ptolemy, was a Greco-Roman mathematician, astronomer, astrologer, geographer, and music theorist, who wrote about a dozen scientific treatises, three of which were important to later Byzantine, Islamic, and Western European science.

The first was his astronomical treatise now known as the Almagest, originally entitled Mathēmatikḗ Syntaxis (lit. 'Mathematical Treatise'). The second is the Geography, which is a thorough discussion on maps and the geographic knowledge of the Greco-Roman world. The third is the astrological treatise in which he attempted to adapt horoscopic astrology to the Aristotelian natural philosophy of his day. This is sometimes known as the Apotelesmatika (Αποτελεσματικά, 'On the Effects') but more commonly known as the Tetrábiblos (from the Koine Greek meaning 'four books'; Latin: Quadripartitum).

The Catholic Church promoted his work, which included the only mathematically sound geocentric model of the Solar System, and unlike most Greek mathematicians, Ptolemy's writings (foremost the Almagest) never ceased to be copied or commented upon, both in late antiquity and in the Middle Ages. However, it is likely that only a few truly mastered the mathematics necessary to understand his works, as evidenced particularly by the many abridged and watered-down introductions to Ptolemy's astronomy that were popular among the Arabs and Byzantines.

His work on epicycles has come to symbolize a very complex theoretical model built in order to explain a false assumption. Epicycles were a geometric model used to explain the variations in speed and direction of the apparent motion of the Moon, Sun, and planets. In particular it explained the apparent retrograde motion of the five planets known at the time. It also explained changes in the apparent distances of the planets from the Earth.

Epicycles worked very well and were highly accurate, because, as Fourier analysis later showed, any smooth curve can be approximated to arbitrary accuracy with a sufficient number of epicycles. However, they fell out of favor with the discovery that planetary motions were largely elliptical from a heliocentric frame of reference, which led to the discovery that gravity obeying a simple inverse square law could better explain all planetary motions.

Thanks for the start, Kitty! I'd heard of Ptolemy but didn't remember details. Have a good morning at church!

Yesterday, I drove AC home after tea and got home myself at 6:40 pm. I couldn't make the shrimp pasta dish and had contacted dh earlier that we needed to pull from the freezer for dinner. Since he'd gotten home before me, he did that, and we had a simple meal of chili, rice, and watermelon. We ate out on our patio. After dinner clean up, AA and her sister came by. She'd replaced the tire to her car and then left it at our house until her sister could come and help her get it home. AA and dh discussed their book; the publishing company editor got back to them, which has been pretty exciting! I think a book pitch is next. AA and her sister left -- and then M got home and wanted to discuss dynamics at her Bible study. By the time she went off to her room, it was 10 pm. I made a little progress on exam prep - but not much. I need chunks of time at home during the day. That wasn't really possible yesterday. I'll try to make that a reality today.

Today, AS moved my work out session with him to tomorrow morning, so I get a more relaxing start to my day. I'll be out of the house from 9:45 - 1-ish: visiting my mom and then meeting B for my birthday lunch. :) I hope to spend the afternoon cranking on exam prep, though I'll have house stuff to do as well. I'll revisit the shrimp pasta dinner tonight. Hopefully, we can have a quiet evening without lots of conversations with other people.

The sun is shining and the forecast high is 95*F (35C). That's really hot for us. ☀️

Good morning/ good afternoon, Helian! You certainly had a very social day yesterday. I hope you can have some uninterrupted time today to make progress with exam prep.

Church was lovely, and I managed to hoover the car and walk down to the vet and back to pick up Fred's Yumove. And I even remembered to order Matilda's flea control.

Afterwards we had coffee and chatted, and I remembered to take a picture of the sign up sheet for parish lunch. Then it was time for my podiatrist appointment, and now I'm finally back home. I met G12 and L11, who have been making water bombs and handing them.out to Amy kids walking past. L was outraged when she told me one mother of 2 small kids had frostily declined her offer  (My sympathies are with the mother. It's a pleasantly warm day with 24C / 75 F, but one still doesn't necessarily want to get wet!)

I'm having a very late lunch, and then I really ought to power wash the car. If G and L are still around I'll see if they would like to "help". That would channel their energies into something.morw productive.

The car is done - both G and L decided they wanted to help, so it was easy for me! (And their Mums were very relieved to have their offspring productively occupied. ) And they helped dry and polish it afterwards.

Matilda is on my lap now, while we wait for Waitrose to arrive.

Hi, all. It is another day off for me [snort giggle] I don't have specific goals, but the need to to create space is pressing in. Space in the kitchen where dirty dishes are on the counters, space all around the apartment where I have laundry layered on drying laundry, empty boxes waiting to be packed with things that could go to the lockers in the basement. I am spoiled for choice, when it comes to activities.

Thank you for starting us off, Kittykatt, and for the introduction to Ptolemy. I have heard the name, but did not know what he was famous for.
LOL, I can well imagine the mother was reluctant to arm her small children with water balloons. One way or another, she would end up with a mess to clean up.

Hi, helia. I'm glad that your df got her car back and in working order. I hope that you are able to set some boundaries to get your work done today, to relieve that stress.

I'm back home and feeling very very sleepy, but I'm going to try to make progress on payroll stuff. I think it will go pretty fast once I get going with it.
I like the water bombs idea! WTG to G and L for helping you clean your car, Kitty!
I'm enjoying your delight in your "days off" Doggedly! :) Were you able to create some space?
