George de Mestral (19 June 1907 – 8 February 1990) was a Swiss electrical engineer who invented the hook and loop fastener which he named Velcro.

George De Mestral got the idea for Velcro® from cockleburs caught in his clothes and his dog’s fur.

During a walk in the woods in 1948, Swiss engineer and outdoorsman de Mestral caught hundreds of burrs in his clothes and his dog’s fur. He wondered how they attached themselves so tenaciously.

De Mestral observed the burrs under a microscope. He saw that each one was covered with hooks that looked like a monster’s mouthful of spiked fangs. These hooks grabbed onto anything that had a loop--clothing fiber, animal fur, or human hair. The common burr was a natural “hook and loop fastener.” De Mestral realized he could create a fabric fastener that acted like the burrs, and so the idea of Velcro® was born.

Thank you for starting us off, trissie. That is interesting about how Velcro was invented. I had heard the story, but didn't realize that it was as far back as 1948.

Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for starting us off. How fascinating to learn about how velcro was developed! It's evidently what comes of having an enquiring mind! Did the big kids get home safely yesterday, and did they have a good time at camp?

DH goes to the office today, and there's lots I would like to get done. (I probably won't get it all done, but at least I can aim high! ) I need to start prioritising self-care, and all too often a walk in the evening doesn't happen. So I need to get out early before it gets hot, even if it's just for a short walk. I have two DPCs (the caterers for parish Christmas lunch and the plumber ), and if I can get one done I'll be happy. I need to gather all my facts for the caterers, including their phone number, and write everything down in a logical order ( full address of the church, name and email address for the treasurer, date, time, number of guests and include a couple of gluten free meals, exactly which menu I've picked, with all the add ons ). Explain that the treasurer has the "chequebook" for the church (she actually does everything online) and ask them to send the invoice there.

And as well, there's the garden, the housework, I need to feed Izzy and let the plasters in to DF CW's house - he is coming to plaster G nearly 13yo 's bedroom while they are away. I'm not sure if he's coming.at 8 am, 8.30 or 9, CW didn't say. So I need to be showered and dressed by 8!!!

Edited to add: plasterer arrived at 7.20 am!!!! So I quickly threw on yesterday's dress and went out to settle him in. He seems very nice and hard working. I've told him I'll be in today, except when I go out for a walk, as I can imagine there will be an urgent problem with plastering! (It's not like water or electricity, when you may need to turn off something urgently, mop up a flood!)

This brought back memories of being charged with pulling burrs off my ddad's clothing when I was a child. They were just ridiculously multiplying things. There were never just a few, lol. I remember thinking, how could there be so many. He eventually began to sing the praises of pants that would "turn the briars" (thick), but having a slick textured fabric (nylon?) sewn on the fronts so that burrs couldn't get a "hold" either. I remember that the new concept of these pairs of outdoors pants would mean they were quite expensive compared to his usual khakis or khaki-colored twill, so he would wear them until the hems frayed but the features would still be working. We always had beagles, so the burrs were much more his problem than our very short-haired dogs'. My uncles' border collies had a worse time!

After an OTC pain pill takes effect, I'll be trying bed again, friends (smile). In the morning my 3 things will be bathroom cleaning, mud room declutter, and a finish (I hope) of Desk Day.

Night night, Dogged! I too was unaware how long velcro has been around!

Speaking of velcro, I will share a tip only mother of (pre)school kids can come up with - to remove accumulated grass, hairs and other hard to get debris from velcros, it's best to use a lice comb! The ones with the long steel "needles" work the best.
Anyway, now to the regular programming. I planned the week around Monday's city medical apt for DS, only to realize it's actually on Wednesday (after I gathered all the paperwork but before we left). Oh well, I have a pot of chili in the slow cooker that was supposed to be lunch (DH was to come home oversee the kids and he wouldn't have had time to cook) and a lot of extra time I didn't plan on having, so no complains there

I have payroll work to do, and then some cleaning - skipping the kids' room, as those have been cleaned out over the weekend, but the master bedroom and bathroom need some attention. Also need to make the kids finish unpacking and get rid of all the evidence of them being on a two week trip
And yes, it's kinda hard to believe that all of them, even the littliest one, are old enough to be gone for two weeks!

Last night, we had the full crew for Sunday dinner - the Cs drove back very fast from the swim meet. J11yo did well -- placed 15th in one race at zones (There are 4 zones in the USA. Our zone is Central with 14? states.). She is 11 in the 11-12 yo girls group, so she's hoping to place higher next year. Dd27 AND dd29 came to dinner, as did Fable and Raven. 8 humans and 2 puppies! LOL! They are playing well together; at one point, Fable started running zoomies and Raven wasn't sure what to do.

Today will be a quieter day. I'm going to go jog and then visit my mom. Payroll prep for tomorrow, finishing laundry, and getting some groceries are on the schedule. Making progress in the fridge cleaning project would be good too.

Morning all. 2 puppies in the middle must have been busy helian. I can't imagine Casper and Po ds26 puppy inside both at the same time. Of course Casper is becoming a much calmer guy but I doubt it with another dog. Po is 5 months Australian shepherd. They played really well together last time. Outside at the lake. They're going to be the perfect size for each other.

How nice of you looking after the contractor at the neighbors place kittykat. I'm sure g's room will be nice. Yup they do like to start early. I imagine you can carry on as you would and just peek in once in a while.

Yikes that's amazing planning trissie being ready for an appointment day with menu etc. Only to find wrong day. I'm glad you caught it before you went there. Certainly messes the week around.

I gotta get in the shower. My schedule says truck like normal which likely means late shift cause I didn't get a text he was going to be early. But I'll get dh to check when he's at work. I should be prepared for 8 in case but aiming late shift. I just finished last week freight on Friday and start right over Monday.
