Re: Turnip Tuesday
The turnip or white turnip (Brassica rapa subsp. rapa) is a root vegetable commonly grown in temperate climates worldwide for its white, fleshy taproot. Small, tender varieties are grown for human consumption, while larger varieties are grown as feed for livestock. The name turnip – used in many regions – may also be used to refer to rutabaga (or neep or swede), which is a different but related vegetable.
The most common type of turnip is mostly white-skinned, apart from the upper 1 to 6 centimetres (1⁄2 to 2+1⁄2 inches), which protrude above the ground and are purple or red or greenish where the sun has hit. This above-ground part develops from stem tissue but is fused with the root.[citation needed] The interior flesh is entirely white. The root is roughly globular, from 5–20 cm (2–8 in) in diameter, and lacks side roots. Underneath, the taproot (the normal root below the swollen storage root) is thin and 10 cm (4 in) or more in length; it is often trimmed off before the vegetable is sold. The leaves grow directly from the above-ground shoulder of the root, with little or no visible crown or neck (as found in rutabagas).
Turnip leaves are sometimes eaten as "turnip greens" ("turnip tops" in the UK), and they resemble mustard greens (to which they are closely related) in flavour. Turnip greens are a common side dish in southeastern U.S. cooking, primarily during late fall and winter. Smaller leaves are preferred. Varieties of turnip grown specifically for their leaves resemble mustard greens and have small roots. These include rapini (broccoli rabe), bok choy, and Chinese cabbage. Similar to raw cabbage or radish, turnip leaves and roots have a pungent flavor that becomes milder after cooking.
Turnip roots weigh up to 1 kilogram (2 pounds), although they are usually harvested when smaller. Size is partly a function of variety and partly a function of the length of time a turnip has grown.
Fun fact: The turnip is an old vegetable charge in heraldry. It was used by Leonhard von Keutschach, prince-archbishop of Salzburg. The turnip is still the heart shield in the arms of Keutschach am See.

Re: Turnip Tuesday
Back from the vets. Somehow everyone has managed to retain all their limbs, as, after being suspiciously quiet in the car and in the waiting room, Freddie unleashed the full extent of his anger in the consulting room.
His next appointment in September nis.not likely to be any better, either, as he needs his bloods done again (sigh) . There was a slight issue with them back in May, as his potassium levels came back as low. Our lovely vet wants to retest to check if it here is anything going on, or whether it was just a blip on the machine, or a side effect of Freddie having to starve before his sedation. Fred is now asleep on my lap, so I shan't be doing anything for a while!

Re: Turnip Tuesday
I've been released from cat servitude,
so I've done a little in my front garden, taken Fred for his walk and had a long chat with Dnextdoorneighbour C. DH has taken the stuff he cleared out from the garage to the tip , and Ive finally started the housework.

Re: Turnip Tuesday
WTG getting Freddie to and from the vet, Kitty. That's kind of the cats to release you. What is the tip?
It is drizzling outside right now - and the juvenile hawk is fussing again. LOL! The blue jays are making lots of noise. Maybe they're trying to make the hawk leave? And there are chipmunk alarm/ indignant calls as well. SO much drama right in our own backyard. I prefer this drama to the drama in the news. Quiet wild turkey sounds are in the mix too, not alarms or gobbles - more like they're talking to each other.
I do like the birds here.
Dh and dd27 are coming home today! They'll need to hike out (their last campsite is on Lake Superior about 7? miles from the road) and then drive 10 hours. So, I don't expect them until this evening. It looks like it is not raining there though it is here.
I went to bed early for me (10), woke up at 4:30 -- and then had trouble getting back to sleep. I did finally get back to sleep -- and overslept my 7 a.m. alarm. SO, may plan didn't really work, although I do feel better this morning. I think I have a sinus infection. Ideally, I'll be otd in 1:10 showered with my class prepped and a lunch in hand. Not sure that's possible. Walking otd in 1:30 would be OK too.
Today is my most scheduled day of the week: 9:30 - 10:30ish, get together with K, S2, and J. 11-1 payroll: teach IR D4. 1:45 - 3:15-ish coffee with M. I doubt I'll get in a jog this afternoon, but I'll try for a walk. I'd like to make progress in the fridge, do towel laundry, and start on the bin -- but that's a lot when I'll get home late and will be tired.
Next:
- payroll: prep IR D4
- s2s and self care
- squeegee and wipe down shower
Later:
- make a lunch

Re: Turnip Tuesday
Good morning, L.Ann and Helia!
L.Ann, we have cool , grey, drizzly weather too, but I think it's supposed to clear up this afternoon. I hope Little Bit enjoys her playdate.
Helia, I just waited until Freddie got up of his own accord!
The tip aka the dump aka recycling centre, is where you can take things you dont want any more, and the council will recycle them/dispose of them safely. DH took a very, very old carton of (unused) oil, that almost certainly wouldn't be any good in a car, and there's a place at the tip where they collect engine oil. He's also taken other stuff from the garage that the dustmen won't take, like old, broken tools. The cardboard boxes all went out for the recycling collection this morning.
I never answered your question yesterday. I don't think (hope!) there is anything majorly wrong with the roof, but a few small bits of mortar are missing from the "verge" on the edge of the house roof, and rather more has dropped out from the edge of the garage roof. It's not a major issue, but it shouldn't cause any leaks, but it's something I really need to have fixed. An added complication is I need to decided whether just to have it repointed with mortar, or whether to go for the new method, which involves some form of composite cover, which is more expensive, but supposed to be much longer lasting. I was hoping handyman A would do it (he's a roofer by trade) but it appears he's having some long lasting personal issues and isn't working ATM. So, I need to bite the bullet and look for someone else.
Just stopped for lunch with DH, as he is back from the tip.
