French beans, also known as green beans, snap beans, or string beans, are the immature pods of various cultivars of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). They are a popular vegetable, enjoyed for their tender texture and mild flavour. French beans can be grown in gardens or containers and come in both climbing and bush (dwarf) varieties.

Climbing French Beans require support, like a trellis or poles, and can grow tall, producing a large crop in a relatively small space.
Bush French Beans are compact and typically don't need support, making them suitable for containers and smaller gardens.

Both types of French beans need at least six hours of sunlight per day. They prefer well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. The seeds can either be sown directly into the ground after the last frost or started indoors a few weeks earlier.

Climbing beans need support structures, while bush beans can be grown without support. They need consistently.moist soil, especially during flowering and pod development. The pods are harvested when they are young and tender, before they become tough and stringy. However, a few pods may be allowed to fully ripen and mature, in order to save seed for next year's crop.

French beans are versatile and can be used in various dishes. They can be steamed, boiled, stir-fried, roasted, or added to salads. They are also often blanched and then used in dishes or frozen for later use. They are a good source of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C, vitamin K, folate, and manganese.

Dogged, LOL at Germane not wishing to associate with all the other dogs! I found out something else about Freddie yesterday. About half way through our appointment, the nurse realised I was "Freddie's Mum" and told me that when the lovely vet D carries Freddie spitting, hissing and swearing in his cage out to the back office for his injection each month (we feel he is a little less badly behaved with5 me there) he tells all the nurses to "stand back and dont come near the cat". They all recognise Freddie and he always has the same blanket over his carrier, and also with all the noise. Apparently they are very impressed with the noise level he produces every single time and the fact that he never stops! Even when D carries Fred's cage back out to me he is still sorting, hissing and swearing. I didn't .think my embarrassment could get any worse!

Today I need to order Fred's meds and food.from the vet, (I'll email it across as I'm.not distracted and there's also a "paper" trail), I have the osteopath at 2.40pm (I can park at the church, but I need to leave early due to roadworks) and while I'm in town see if I can pick up my order from Lakeland. Other aims are to spend some time in my garden this morning, and to maybe paint the first coat on the bathroom ceiling. Oh, and I need to email DF HT about this month's parish lunch. Anything else would be a bonus!

kittykatt, isn't it amazing how we can know that the cat is actually swearing in his own language! I had one who did that when he wasn't allowed to go hide where he wanted to go.
Why are they called French beans? I've jus t always called them green beans. And, at least on this side of the Atlantic, when they are cut lengthwise, it's called French cut. I've wondered about that too.
Doggedly, I hope Germane was rightfully proud of looking good!

Sleep well, Gma! I think over here French beans may be called "French" beans to distinguish them from "runner" beans (also long and green and grown the same way, but are longer and fatter). But we usually just "top and tail" French beans to cook them, whereas runner beans need to have the "strings" removed from each side and then sliced diagonally.

I'm sitting in my garden enjoying the sun before it gets too hot. So far Ive cut the grass and trimmed the bits sticking out on part of the hedge. Oh, and I've sent a couple of emails.

I'm up - drinking coffee! Slept well and long (almost 10 hours) and feel normal this morning. I still have symptoms of the sinus infection, but they are improving and the fevers are gone. It feels good to feel normal.

Your dgson is lucky to have a grandma who bakes brownies for him, Gma. I forgot who the cookies are for.

Nursing Homes: I don't know MI's laws re: NH costs, but I think my mom is a 1 assist. Her NH does have those distinctions. Maybe she has just become 2?? She's private pay, and the bills go straight to the trustee so I don't see them. Interestingly, Mom is still earning money through her retirement pension and survivor benefits from Dad's pension. (Universities don't offer pensions anymore.) And I think some of the farmland, one piece in particular, makes money every year. (Not all farmland does that.) Dad did have that long term care insurance that covered $250K, but it ran out a couple years ago. Dh and I have thought of signing up for that insurance now, even though we're young (relatively - 58 and 61) and in good health. We've been told it is cheaper to sign up now than when we need it in the future. We've been too busy to look into it.

The staff at Mom's nursing home is wonderful. When dd29 was there on Wednesday, she commented that they were "really really good with Grandma." And she's not easy to impress. They truly care -- and they like Mom. And we like the fact that we could provide the furnishings for her room there, so it's more personalized and has some familiar items from her home.

Today, I'm going to pick up my exams at the school and visit my mom. This afternoon, I'd like to go for a walk. I think I'll wait until the weekend to start jogging again. M is hosting a work dinner here this evening. She's planning to hold it on the patio, but I know how these things go and people will end up inside. I'll make sure the living areas are tidy and s/s the main bathroom. I also need to finish laundry. Dh and I will go out tonight per our regular Friday evening routine.

Morning all. Interesting about the nursing home policies I feel like they are very different in the US than here. I think they just charge by how much income you have and assets. Which seems why dad is adamant that he figure out how to get mom's name off the property title and such. He's afraid it will be really expensive. Yet he didn't understand stuff before about getting things in place while she could still sign for it. Complicated relationship we have we've tried to help... he does it his own way anyway ... dh and I have all but given the stress back on him. I don't really understand much of it. My sister is good at the research and would have had most of it solved without so many troubles.... whatever.. tmi and he is adamant he can care for her. I don't know if any of that makes sense.

Anyway I guess I should get up and do a few things before work. Like make something for lunch. And tidy the kitchen a bit more.
