Hay Tor, also known as Haytor Rocks, Haytor, or occasionally Hey Tor,is a granite tor on the eastern edge of Dartmoor in the English county of Devon.
Idetordoune (1566), Ittor Doune (1687), Idetor (1737), Eator Down (1762) and Itterdown (1789) are a few recorded examples of earlier names by which Haytor was known.[4] The name Haytor is of comparatively recent origin, and is probably a corruption of its old name and that of the Haytor Hundred, which covered the coastal area between the River Teign and River Dart,itself now considered to have been named after a lost village located somewhere between Totnes and Newton Abbot.
Haytor has the form of a typical "avenue" tor, where the granite between the two main outcrops has been eroded away. Its characteristic shape is a notable landmark visible on the skyline from many places in south Devon between Exeter and Totnes. The majority of the tor consists of coarse-grained granite, but at the base of the western outcrop is a layer of finer-grained granite which has eroded more than the rock above, leaving a pronounced overhang (a rock shelter) of two or three feet in places.
Haytorite, a variety of quartz found in an iron mine adjacent to the Hay Tor granite quarries, was named “in honour of its birth-place”.
In the 19th century steps were made to allow pedestrians up to the top of the tor and a metal handrail fixed to allow tourists easier access to the summit. This was not entirely welcomed and in 1851, a Dr Croker complained about the rock steps that had been cut "to enable the enervated and pinguedinous scions of humanity of this wonderful nineteenth century to gain the summit".The handrail was removed in the 1960s due to it rusting: the stumps of the uprights are still embedded in the rock.[9]
In 1953, Haytor was used as a major location for the feature film Knights of the Round Table starring Robert Taylor and Ava Gardner. An "elaborate and impressive castle" was built between the two main rock piles of the tor and traditional medieval sports, including jousting, were staged here for the film.
The whole of Haytor Down was sold to the newly formed Dartmoor National Park Authority in 1974.

Sleep well, Dogged -I think it must be nearly your bedtime? 
I've started to CUOP. Ice cream is tricky to decide what you're intolerant to, as it depends on what you mean by "ice cream". 
If it's a high quality product containing onIy cream and milk , sugar , eggs and a natural flavouring such as vanilla pods or coffee beans, and you react badly, then I would guess yes, it's probably a lactose intolerance. (Or possibly greed, if you eat the whole carton ) - it's very rich and a big amount would probably upset even the strongest stomach! I found this out the hard way, as I'm fine with a few scoops of Waiteoses's No1 coffee ice-cream, (which literally does only have 5 ingredients) in a dessert dish, but felt distinctly unwell after taking a spoon and finishing off the rest of the carton. 
. However, a lot of ice cream, especially the cheaper brands, have very little actual cream, but a *lot* of "non dairy fat" and other tempting goodies such as "emulsifiers", items with long and unpronouncible names, and, of course, E numbers, and the ingredients list often goes on for several lines. 
If you react badly to this, then I'm guessing you're intolerant to something ( or maybe several things) in the "chemistry set" it contains.
Welcome back, Trissie! I'm glad you had a wonderful time. Monet's garden is on my bucket list, though I've seen prints of the paintings, of course. (I dont think Ive seen any if the originals, but I could be wrong!)
L.Ann, I'm glad the latest problem is DD's health is a "good" one to have.
FFB, I think guilt plagues every Mum, you're doing so well reading to (and with!) your DKids. Many of my friends confessed they often found it so what tedious, especially if there was a request to read "The Elves and the Shoemaker" for the umpteenth time!
Helian, I'm glad you managed to sort out the insurance. I have limited experience (mostly with the cats -I still don't undees5 why our account at the vet showed a £28 credit after Petplan had paid Matilda's dental bill, especially as they wouldn't pay the £1.49 for the pouch of food she was given while recovering!!)
Bama, I think people who jump on the allergy / intolerance bandwagon either for attention or because it's "fashionable" are both tiresome and make life very difficult for those with genuine issues such as your DD. I used to work with someone who claimed to be intolerant / allergic to almost everything. And made a huge amount of fuss about it. She was "outed" one Christmas work lunch, when having claimed she could only eat braised carrots, changed her time very quickly when the dessert trolley was wheeled out, and suddenly discovered she could eat waffles with whipped cream, maple syrup, chocolate sauce and strawberries, and also chocolate cake!!! (With no ill effects that I could see that afternoon, and she came to work as usual the following day.)
I never made it back yesterday. I had a busy, productive day, and then then when I did sit down in the evening , Matilda discovered a huge spider that ran across the carpet and I Der a dining chair , and decided she wanted to play with/kill / eat it.
We don't have poisonous spiders here, but the big ones can still give a nasty bite, I'm not sure of the result of spider on her digestive system, and I really didn't want an emergency vet visit at any time, but least of all on the evening of a bank holiday! So I grabbed Matilda (she was very cross! ) and DH safely evicted the spider back outside. Matilda then spent the rest of the evening looking for "her" spider .
We had rain overnight, but the day looks quite bright so far. I'm not sure if it was enough rain so I don't have to water today. I'll check when I get up. Today DH is WFH, and I have a Tuesday with no appointments, so I'm hoping it will be productive.

I missed the whole allergy discussion last night. It's important in our household as dd29 has celiac disease, which is not an allergy - it's an autoimmune disease. However, some people in the past have treated her as if it's just a "fussy preference" she has. She would prefer to be able to eat gluten. Its diagnosis involved a biopsy of the small intestine. Dd29 isn't demanding in that she won't make other people make gluten free food for her -- because she doesn't trust them and wouldn't eat it anyway. She has become more sensitive over time, and her Dr. has told her to be more careful with cross-contamination. Dd29 knows the boundaries she needs to keep to stay healthy, but she does not expect others to eat the same. If anything, she offends people when she refuses to eat their gluten free food. She will only eat gluten free if it is made in a kitchen she knows is dedicated gluten free, including cookware and cutting boards, etc. We have chosen to keep our house gluten free so it can be a place where she can feel safe to eat. But dh and I certainly enjoy gluten outside of our home!!
The alarm was hard to hear this morning but I'm up. I got my class mostly prepped last night; I need to print out a couple handouts and put up a quizlet set. Then, I should be done.
Today, I have the KSJ get together 9:30 - 10:30-ish. I'll go straight from J's house to payroll and teach 11-1. This afternoon, I'd like to try a short jog since I didn't do that yesterday. I'd like to do more laundry and work on the fridge, pay Mom's PT bill. We're hosting the dinner crew tonight, 7 people, I think. L, the immigration lawyer, is coming! We haven't seen her for ages. M is coming late and A is leaving early. I hope the girls are coming -- maybe not dd29. She is very busy with work this week.

I missed the whole allergy discussion last night. It's important in our household as dd29 has celiac disease, which is not an allergy - it's an autoimmune disease. However, some people in the past have treated her as if it's just a "fussy preference" she has. She would prefer to be able to eat gluten. Its diagnosis involved a biopsy of the small intestine. Dd29 isn't demanding in that she won't make other people make gluten free food for her -- because she doesn't trust them and wouldn't eat it anyway. She has become more sensitive over time, and her Dr. has told her to be more careful with cross-contamination. Dd29 knows the boundaries she needs to keep to stay healthy, but she does not expect others to eat the same. If anything, she offends people when she refuses to eat their gluten free food. She will only eat gluten free if it is made in a kitchen she knows is dedicated gluten free, including cookware and cutting boards, etc. We have chosen to keep our house gluten free so it can be a place where she can feel safe to eat. But dh and I certainly enjoy gluten outside of our home!!
The alarm was hard to hear this morning but I'm up. I got my class mostly prepped last night; I need to print out a couple handouts and put up a quizlet set. Then, I should be done.
Today, I have the KSJ get together 9:30 - 10:30-ish. I'll go straight from J's house to payroll and teach 11-1. This afternoon, I'd like to try a short jog since I didn't do that yesterday. I'd like to do more laundry and work on the fridge, pay Mom's PT bill. We're hosting the dinner crew tonight, 7 people, I think. L, the immigration lawyer, is coming! We haven't seen her for ages. M is coming late and A is leaving early. I hope the girls are coming -- maybe not dd29. She is very busy with work this week.

helia, is DD actually able to eat anywhere outside her/your home? Even "apparently gluten free foods" like raw fruit and vegetables might have been placed on a contaminated surface... But I am sure you must have all learned and adapted to it by now.
There's an old (I think Jewish) story about a town where all the people were complaining about how others have lighter burdens to bear. And G*d grew tired of their complains and told them to bring all their burdens to the main square and leave them there overnight and come in the morning and take somebody else's burdens. People brought their burdens, but when they got home, they started thinking "Oh, neighbour H, he has plenty of money, but his face is yellow and his eyes are haunted!" and "and miss G, she's so pretty and all men want her, but her mother does not allow her to marry anybody!" and during the night, they all snuck back to the square to retrieve their own burdens!
So, for all my struggles raising neurodivergent kids (which is far from an easy task), I don't think I could handle what you have to!

kittykatt, Monet's gardens are definitely worth visiting, even if you've never seen the originals of the paintings!
I hope I will get there again, a different season (maybe spring for all the roses?)

Thank you for explaining all about being celiac, Helia. I have one acquaintance who is celiac (the whole family now eat gluten free, so as not to contaminate the kitchen.) And I know three people who have a gluten intolerance but I dont think are actually celiac. (We'll of course being having separate gluten free food at the parish Christmas lunch, and I think B, H and M will come, but almost certainly not S, as she has to be so very careful. Maybe I could have a chat with her and see if she would come if I said I was happy for her to bring her own food? Or maybe she's just too anxious to even do that? IDK)
Trissie, my DF CW told me recently that the school think her DD G nearly 13 yo may be dyslexic and also have ADHD. She is struggling with her school work, despite putting the effort in. But because there's 27 kids in her year that are worse, they can't afford to test them all.
DF CW is looking into getting G assessed privately, as she feels it would be good to know. The school's contribution so far has been to let G drop French and use the time for extra reading practice instead. In the meantime, G has started ballet lessons, and the teacher has said she's a "natural", so she has something she is good at and helps to boost her self esteem. Having seen G's struggles and the worry CW has, I am full of respect for you, raising several neuro divergent children!
Today I've taken Fred out, been for my walk along the stream, and had a good session in my garden despite the rain showers, and had lunch with DH. I really need to start my housework!
