A slide rule is a hand-operated mechanical calculator consisting of slidable rulers for conducting mathematical operations such as multiplication, division, exponents, roots, logarithms, and trigonometry. It is one of the simplest analogue computers.

Slide rules exist in a diverse range of styles and generally appear in a linear, circular or cylindrical form. Slide rules manufactured for specialized fields such as aviation or finance typically feature additional scales that aid in specialized calculations particular to those fields. The slide rule is closely related to nomograms used for application-specific computations. Though similar in name and appearance to a standard ruler, the slide rule is not meant to be used for measuring length or drawing straight lines. Maximum accuracy for standard linear slide rules is about three decimal significant digits, while scientific notation is used to keep track of the order of magnitude of results.

English mathematician and clergyman Reverend William Oughtred and others developed the slide rule in the 17th century based on the emerging work on logarithms by John Napier. It made calculations faster and less error-prone than evaluating on paper. Before the advent of the scientific pocket calculator, it was the most commonly used calculation tool in science and engineering.

The slide rule's ease of use, ready availability, and low cost caused its use to continue to grow through the 1950s and 1960 even with the introduction of mainframe digital electronic computers. But after the handheld HP-35 scientific calculator was introduced in 1972 and became inexpensive in the mid-1970s, slide rules became largely obsolete and no longer were in use by the advent of personal desktop computers in the 1980s.

Kittykatt, thanks for the start, have a good time at church, good luck with the coffee service. Thank you for the gardening info yesterday. Actually MrNG tried several times to plant ant to sow cabbages and this year Brussels sprouts but they never succeeded - and the snails love them. Is it because he planted and sowed in the Spring, and would they be better when started at the end of summer ?

Bama thanks for answering my curiosity about your fall veggies. We have collard greens galore, MrNG planted them at the end of the SPring and they are an amanzing crop, they seem to love it here anyway. I thin we never tried mustard greens.

helia (( )) I'm so very sorry reading about your DM. I hope you can spend more good time with her while it's time.

trissie it seems to have been an amazing year for apples and plums everywhere. Trees are breaking under the weight of the fruit. Many people give away fruit, to their neighbours or others. Friday evening when driving back home I saw a large box of apples on a side curb with a sign "help yourself". Hopefully the price of fruit in the shops is lower as a result ?

Interesting talks about glue and scissors yesterday, and about spoons too

Unfortunately, the abundance of fruit on trees is not reflected by the supermarket prices, Frenchie, but we shall see as the season progresses.
helia, I kinda thought that letting your mom go would be the more compassionate option, but didn't want to sound insensitive. It still doesn't make it any easier! But I also think it's rather poetic - my mother in law, who lost both of her parents very early, around the time she was pregnant with DH and his sister, says that "the old souls make the space for the new souls to come".

Another slow morning. The full moon is messing up my sleep, so I didn't fall asleep till 2am, so slept in a bit. It's week 2 of the Christmas plans, but I hardly got started on week 1, and there's a basket (finally the last one!) of plums and DH said he'd try to harvest some apples, so I don't really foresee much cleaning in my future

trissie what did you manage to can yesterday, mostly stewed apples ? do you do plum jam ?

DS9 spent most of the morning with neighbouring kids T-- and R-- and seems to have enjjoyed it. They just left primary school for 6th grade which here is called the "collège" (11yo-15yo) and I think it's a good thing that he hears about it, because next fall he too will leave primary school - and he's not looking forward to it.
DS7 helped me prepare baked apples while I was fixing lunch, so we had a full meal.

I've been thinking about the timing too, trissie. Yes, very poetic: death and loss followed by new life and a bundle of joy! That feels like God. I believe that same pattern will be true for my mom as well -- after suffering for a bit, she will be ushered into a new life. Still, yes, it will be hard. Glad you're getting a slow morning - and I can't believe it's week 2 of the Christmas plans.
Glad you got a slow morning too, FFB. I still need to cook leeks! Maybe this fall. Glad DS9 had a good time with older friends.

Yesterday, the day with dbro and dniece went very well, all things considered. Dbro was either eating or sleeping or out on an activity with us, so not too difficult. He sleeps a LOT, I think like 3 naps yesterday. I made lunch for dniece bc he was asleep. When present, dbro does talk incessantly, and he doesn't help with cooking or clean up or anything. But he's not bad-tempered or demanding. And he greatly enjoyed and appreciated our meal last night as well as the banana bread dd27 made for him! The apple orchard was outrageously expensive for the amount of time we were there, but it was a fun outing. Dniece enjoyed feeding the llamas and goats! We didn't make it to the apple cannon, though. Oh well. I got a cup of hot cider, and dbro got some sort of homemade funyun snack. Dh bought some jam and pickles!! We all managed to stay away from the donuts.

Today is a new day and the sun is shining. Dbro + dniece left about 45 minutes ago. Dh is out on a long run. I'm sitting in our living room by myself drinking my coffee. We need to be otd to church in 1:15.

Today is quite scheduled but hopefully not stressful. 10 - 11:30ish is church. Dh's family zoom meeting is 1:30 - 2:30. We are hosting CG2 3:30 - 6ish. Then, dd27's bday dinner is 6 - ? -- at the girls' place, thank goodness. We don't need to cook for it, though we do need to have our gifts wrapped and our speeches ready beforehand. I should go for a jog today but I just don't see that happening.

helia, glad DBrother's visit is better than you expected!
Frenchie, I've already done two batches of powidl, which is kind of a plum jam, originally cooked for very long time (think a day or more) to evaporate most of the water, but the recipe I make uses sugar and vinegar and spices for a rich taste. Still it cooks for over 4 hours to be done DH wants to make another batch, and as long as he pits the plum, I am fine with the idea But I was working on apples yesterday - a batch of unsweetened apple sauce, and a batch of shredded apples for struedel (that's what my grandma used to make - you fill a jar with shredded apples, squeeze out as much juice as you can and then sterilize it in water. Making apple struedel is so much easier when the apples are all ready!
