Re: Mauna Kea Volcano Monday @ TDD - C&C
Mauna Kea (abbreviation for Mauna a Wākea, 'White Mountain') is a dormant shield volcano on the island of Hawaiʻi. Its peak is 4,207.3 m (13,803 ft) above sea level, making it the highest point in Hawaii and the island with the second highest high point, behind New Guinea, the world's largest tropical island with multiple peaks that are higher. The peak is about 38 m (125 ft) higher than Mauna Loa, its more massive neighbor. Mauna Kea is unusually topographically prominent for its height: its prominence from sea level is 15th in the world among mountains, at 4,207.3 m (13,803 ft); its prominence from under the ocean is 9,330 m (30,610 ft), rivaled only by Mount Everest. This dry prominence is greater than Everest's height above sea level of 8,848.86 m (29,032 ft), and some authorities have labeled Mauna Kea the tallest mountain in the world, from its underwater base. Mauna Kea is ranked 8th by topographic isolation.
It is about one million years old and thus passed the most active shield stage of life hundreds of thousands of years ago. In its current post-shield state, its lava is more viscous, resulting in a steeper profile. Late volcanism has also given it a much rougher appearance than its neighboring volcanoes due to construction of cinder cones, decentralization of its rift zones, glaciation on its peak, and weathering by the prevailing trade winds. Mauna Kea last erupted 6,000 to 4,000 years ago and is now thought to be dormant.
In Hawaiian religion, the peaks of the island of Hawaiʻi are sacred. An ancient law allowed only high-ranking aliʻi to visit its peak. Ancient Hawaiians living on the slopes of Mauna Kea relied on its extensive forests for food, and quarried the dense volcano-glacial basalts on its flanks for tool production. When Europeans arrived in the late 18th century, settlers introduced cattle, sheep, and game animals, many of which became feral and began to damage the volcano's ecological balance. Mauna Kea can be ecologically divided into three sections: an alpine climate at its summit, a Sophora chrysophylla–Myoporum sandwicense (or māmane–naio) forest on its flanks, and an Acacia koa–Metrosideros polymorpha (or koa–ʻōhiʻa) forest, now mostly cleared by the former sugar industry, at its base. In recent years, concern over the vulnerability of the native species has led to court cases that have forced the Hawaiʻi Department of Land and Natural Resources to work towards eradicating all feral species on the volcano.
With its high elevation, dry environment, and stable airflow, Mauna Kea's summit is one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observation. Since the creation of an access road in 1964, thirteen telescopes funded by eleven countries have been constructed at the summit. The Mauna Kea Observatories are used for scientific research across the electromagnetic spectrum and comprise the largest such facility in the world. Their construction on a landscape considered sacred by Native Hawaiians continues to be a topic of debate to this day.

Re: Mauna Kea Volcano Monday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning Trissie and thank you for a fascinating start - I can see this week is going to be very educational!
Today is forecast to be dry and sunny, so I need to make the most of the outside opportunities with a walk and some garden time. It would be good to finish the pots of bulbs if I can, and do a little more to that climbing rose. And, of course, there's plenty to do indoors too. DH goes to the office today, so I need to make the most of the day to myself.
(I'm aware these days are numbered with DH"s possible retirement looming and there will be a lot of changes for both of us, so I'm making the most of them while they last!)

Re: Mauna Kea Volcano Monday @ TDD - C&C
Back from my walk. It's a beautiful sunny morning, with 20C / 68F, so just perfect. Freddie has also been for his walk, so he is now snoring in a patch of sunlight
.
Going to sort the rubbish next, then have some time in my garden.

Re: Mauna Kea Volcano Monday @ TDD - C&C
Ooh volcanoes! Looking forward to this week! We visited this volcano once when the kids were very small, but dd27 was so small (just 1yo) at the time, that I stayed with her in the car while dh took ds5 and dd3.5 up to see it a bit closer. I'd forgotten about the observatories up there.
I hope you're having a pleasant Monday, trissie.
Good morning L Ann! have a nice walk! I might join you in getting groceries today.
Glad you got to enjoy your time outside, Kitty. Sounds like a lovely day!
Yesterday, CG2 was cancelled, which was helpful. We're scheduled to meet next week anyway, though we are an every other week group. (Skippable: We're now scheduling meetings when they work best rather than at regular intervals; L is in med school residency, and so her schedule is very full and varies. B is a medical fellow, I think -- anesthesiology -- but his schedule is pretty regular at this point, though he occasionally has to be on call.) It was nice to get the gradelink payroll work done as well as editing the next writing coursepack. I also wrote notes for my birthday speech to dd27, wrapped her gift, printed out a pic of the Etsy dog basket that is arriving soon. The meeting with dh's family was typical -- very cheerful, lots of people (he has a very large family), plenty of laughter, proposals to make a family hike as complicated as possible LOL!
. All in Dutch. I understood most - but not all. I completely missed the proposal for 2 different routes that would converge at the same huts at night? Dd27 got that. Good Dutch language practice. I didn't get in a jog; I also spent some time messaging back and forth with AC, my supervisor and friend. 6pm onward, we were at the girls' place for dd27's birthday dinner. Dd29 grilled chicken shawarma meat and also made rice and this awesome tomato and cucumber salad. Dd27 made her own dessert: a chocolate mousse-y pie!!
We all think she could open a gluten-free bakery here. There isn't really one, which kind of flabbergasts us all -- and her desserts and baked goods are so delicious! We got home around 9:30 pm.
Today, I'm meeting friend SS for coffee at 10. Then, I'm going to stop by and see Mom. End of life conversations with the NH and hospice, a jog, and getting groceries will hopefully happen this afternoon. I think I'm going to have a phone/ zoom call with ds at some point today re: traveling here to see my mom before she goes. That will be his decision to make. These are the main things for today. I think.

Re: Mauna Kea Volcano Monday @ TDD - C&C
Morning all. Helian that is a tough decision for ds. Deciding if he wants to come see grandma. Especially with it close to baby coming.
Kittykat I hope you enjoy the sunny day in the garden today. I bet it's still gorgeous. What blooms now in September?
Morning lann. Have a good day. And trissie is probably almost done work again.
A decent weekend.. beautiful weather. We went to mom and dad's twice. Good for a bit? Maybe? Saturday dh helped him with a couple things. Sunday we brought him cake and weiner roast. His birthday is tomorrow. Weekend works best for that. Missed ds and ddil. Ds had to stay out the weekend again. Trying to finish up that job 3 hours away. Ddil tends to spend most of the time at her parents place.
I think it's probably time now to deal with the rest of the garden. Dill. Carrots. A few onions. Cabbage. Kale. And herbs and tomatoes. I shouldn't have bothered with the pickle cukes. Getting one at a time they will be bad before I have enough.
Today I have to remember to do my big item shopping before freight comes. I need a couple milk crates to store potatoes in. Some bins and shelves. Seeing more project. I looked at the shelves the other day. The white melamine ones only come 4 ft long. Have to get the unfinished pine cause I want them 5 ft. Meaning I need to go look either they will be unfinished or paint or stain. Whatever is in my storage room i need to finish them first.
Routines first. School run and work after I drop him off.
Shower and scrub it some
Start laundry
Tidy laundry room and master bedroom some
Look and choose what to finish shelves with
Empty and reload dw
Finish tidying kitchen all the way
Finish getting ready for work
Breakfast for ds
School run and off to work
Buy my supplies
