It's the 3rd Saturday of September, International Eat an Apple Day.
According to the National Day Calendar,
Apples :
* are high in fiber and water content, which helps with weight loss
* promote good gut bacteria
* are linked to a lower risk of heart disease and diabetes
* may help prevent cancer
* also may be good for bone health
The apple originated in Central Asia. Today, people all over the world enjoy these delicious fruits. There are many different kinds of apples. Throughout the world, apples come in 7,500 different varieties. In the United States, 2,500 varieties are grown. Some of the most popular include Red Delicious, Gala, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Fuji, and Pink Lady.
How do you enjoy apples in your household? Is there an apple memory that is meaningful to you?
Things learned on the way to learning other things:
When I took classes toward my certificate in nutrition, I learned a couple interesting facts. The single most important change that can help worldwide nutrition has been determined as adding an additional piece of fruit into diets daily. That's a reason given for a big push over the last decade toward more planting of fruit trees (and other plants), being subsidized by worldwide charity organizations like Heifer Project, Gates Foundation, etc. The fruit tree most often planted toward that goal has been the apple.
And, since the most nutritious part of the apple (or pear, etc.) is the peeling, folks who subscribe to low-calorie eating for longevity often cut the peel away into disk shapes that only have some of the white interior, to add to salads. The center is considered by these folks to be most valuable as good compost material !
Anyway, today is also International Red Panda Day - that's important, too!
I did have a Cosmic Crisp apple this morning, out of a bag we've been working on for a few days. I ate it down to the seeds, lol.
It's that time of year here - Truck-farming cousin put photos of his loaded pear and apple trees on fb, HRH tells me.
I do feel better this morning. Yesterday continued to be a kinda sick day. Felt weak and even light-headed at times, which I suppose was related to reactions. Seemed to need a lot of sleep last night. Dreams were impressive - ugh.
Today I want to:
Keep sewing along on my project
Extra Laundry, including pre-washing HRH's new dark shirts
Bathroom cleaning continues
Ready for a couple sets of company who have suggested they might see us this weekend
Yes, to savoring a good fresh apple! We go through cycles of enjoying different fruits. In the summer, we’re drawn to fresh berries, peaches, and plums. During winter, oranges and cuties take the spotlight. Apples and bananas make occasional appearances here and there.
It's hair washing day for me, so I got that done first thing. DS17 has headed off to work, and I'm enjoying a weekend day free from school responsibilities.
I've got my priorities set to accomplish during the next hour.
1 -2 -3 GO!

Stopping by to say I love your today's title, and also to inform anybody who might be lacking apples, to stop by our places, as we have far more than we can use!
There was disastrous late frost last spring and we lost all the harvest, not even a single apple left. But the trees used the year to gather a lot of strenght and went overboard this year. I've been collecting and processing apples for a month now and we are nowhere near being done - and mind you, we're not farmers for whom that would be the normal way of life, we live in the suburbs of a large city with regular day jobs! But when God - or Mother Nature - giveth, you gotta accept those gifts and treat them with respect
I grow apples from a tree that came town came back from roots these are "deer apples".
As I do not eat em b/c they jack up my sugar #. =( luv em.
Today glad I slept in till 6:30 up just as the sun was coming over the horizon.

How wonderful, Trissie that you have apples! We had apple trees when I was growing up - they never were much to look at or very productive, but trying out a few apples was always fun in the fall. I love them with peanut butter now as a snack. Protein, fat, and carb!
We're going out for dinner tonight. Not in our original plans, but friends have a reservation at a local restaurant that was named as one of the NYT 50 best restaurants in the U.S. Their out of town guest wasn't able to come in, so they invited us to join them. We've been there before and felt it was overpriced but we liked the food, which is served family style as a common platter to be passed around. Maybe it's weird but I'd rather order what I want and it's mine, all mine, lol. So we agreed to go, I assume reservations there will be harder to get going forward. The other thing is that this couple eats much later than we do - they own a small biz so often leave work late...so reservation is 7:45. OTOH, we aren't able to go a lot of times when they invite us because they are more last-minute people, so feeling like we should accept when we can.
And dh has football to watch today. His honey-do list is for today-tomorrow - only straightening up our closed on his side, and cleaning up from spilled iced coffee. (Spilled coffee on door frame, door, wall....you can imagine. And the closet - he likes to take some friends to our closet to show off his bourbon that isn't "out" so i want it neater.)
First up I need to fold laundry and clean the big back window. Actually it will need cleaning several times probably because it's big, and everything shows up on it in the afternoon sun. It gets some bird strikes and lots of bugs. When we had window cleaners in July, it was only days before we had a bird strike on it.

The past hour plan went well. Now i am taking a break until TOTH.
I love hearing about successful fruit-growing stories. Over the years, I’ve tried growing nearly every type of fruit tree, with a mix of successes and failures. During the master gardener course, I realized I wasn’t ready to follow all the recommended practices. Now, we just grow grapes and berries, and I’m happy to pay someone else to grow the other organic fruits.

I havent' started yet today - my brother has been awful and mean - saying things about killing mom off in front of her - she hears him even if she is out of it - she woke after his tirade and she is terrified now. why. The dr.s say she is improving - He told dd older that it was stupid that she is talking to her and that he can fill her with morphine if he wants and should have done that when mom broke her pelvis. he spoke to his girlfriend and said he wants to put her on morphine wether the drs want him or not. He also wanted his girlfriend to come in to the hospital to see my mom. she was part of the nursing staff at the nursing home mom was at that didn't send her in to the hospital when their dr. said to. He said he can kill her with morphine anytime he wants to. geesh. he is just being mean to be mean.
I am a big believer in Hospice but he is using this as a tool to hurt by us. no one wants mom to suffer - she almost died and should have - my brother was there and he let them give her oxygen etc. she turned around fast and he didn't expect it. The drs. say she is getting better - and that everything is going in the right direction - i don't want to keep her a live for all costs but she is awake and eating. I had hoped she would pass when she had the breathing problem - she will die but her body isn't giving up yet.
I told him I had to wait and see - wrap my head around things if she didnt' get better. The drs. came in and said she is better.
So that's what we are dealing with. What a sad mean family I have in my brother and my uncle and others. Thank goodness I have dh - dh being healthy again has made life good again - he isn't angry any more, the girls and my in-laws and good friends have made this better.
