Re: Flamingo Friday @ TDD - C&C
Flamingos or flamingoes are a type of wading bird in the family Phoenicopteridae, which is the only extant family in the order Phoenicopteriformes. There are four flamingo species distributed throughout the Americas (including the Caribbean), and two species native to Afro-Eurasia.
A group of flamingos is called a "flamboyance", or a "stand".
The name flamingo comes from Portuguese or Spanish flamengo 'flame-colored'; in turn, the word comes from Provençal flamenc – a combination of flama 'flame' and a Germanic-like suffix -ing. The word may also have been influenced by the Spanish ethnonym flamenco 'Fleming' or 'Flemish'. The name of the genus, Phoenicopterus, is from Ancient Greek φοινικόπτερος (phoinikopteros) 'crimson/red-feathered'; other genera names include Phoeniconaias, which means 'crimson/red water nymph (or naiad)', and Phoenicoparrus, which means 'crimson/red bird (though, an unknown bird of omen)'.
Flamingos usually stand on one leg with the other tucked beneath the body. The reason for this behaviour is not fully understood. One theory is that standing on one leg allows the birds to conserve more body heat, given that they spend a significant amount of time wading in cold water. However, the behaviour also takes place in warm water and is also observed in birds that do not typically stand in water. An alternative theory is that standing on one leg reduces the energy expenditure for producing muscular effort to stand and balance on one leg. A study on cadavers showed that the one-legged pose could be held without any muscle activity, while living flamingos demonstrate substantially less body sway in a one-legged posture.
While walking, a flamingo's legs may appear to bend backwards. This appearance is due to the middle joint on their legs being their ankle, not their knee. Flamingos also have webbed feet that aid with swimming and they may stamp their feet in the mud to stir up food from the bottom.
Flamingos are capable flyers, and flamingos in captivity often require wing clipping to prevent escape. A pair of African flamingos which had not yet had their wings clipped escaped from the Wichita, Kansas, zoo in 2005. One was spotted in Texas 14 years later. It had been seen previously by birders in Texas, Wisconsin and Louisiana.

Re: Flamingo Friday @ TDD - C&C
Happy Friday!
I was so exhausted last night that I just went to bed at 11:30, meaning I got 6.5 hours of sleep! I'll move mountains today or something after so much rest!
Working from home today, which will help also. DH has not decided yet if we are staying home this weekend or if we are leaving for the cottage. He doesn't make planning easy for me!
Of course, it may end up so that he goes for one day and I stay home with the kids, but we shall see. I haven't been there since early July!

Re: Flamingo Friday @ TDD - C&C
Of course Friday is for Flamingoes! I have read taht their color comes from their diet.
If the cottage is relaxing and fun for you, with your hubby and kids, then I hope you can go. If hubby can take the kids and will you get rest at home?
G'night. I will sleep in clean sheets tonight

Re: Flamingo Friday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning, Trissie, and good night, Gma!
Thank you for the start, Trissie! I hope today is productive for you.
Sleep well, Gma! Clean sheets are the best!
I'm back from dropping Matilda off at the vet for her ultrasound/ x-ray. She was.jit happy at having to fast overnight (she is a grazer) and faking a early bedtime for her was a bust - she refused to eat any of her supper.
In the end, I sat on the bed with her and had fed her some biscuits (her favourite) so we all got some sleep, and I only.missed the 10 pm deadline by a few minutes, which the nurse today said didn't matter.
I was woken by a brisk game of pokey paw with my feet at 5 am, but at least everyone had a reasonable night's sleep!
I'm having breakfast in my garden now, it's chilly but sunny and I want to make the most of it before the rain is supposed nto return tomorrow. It's also a chance for a little peace and quiet before I go and visit C and taker her groceries.
Next: text DF PM to check she has water -one of the roads I drove along to the vet was badly flooded due to a burst water main in a nearby road, which is near where she lives.
(I can always drop round drinking water for her, and offer the use of our shower).

You're such a good friend, kittykatt!
clean sheets are the best, gma! and for me, the super best combination is freshly ironed sheets and freshly shaved legs. Doesn't coincide too often in my household, though!
Done with work for the week. What got done, got done, and what did not, will have to wait till next week!

Re: Flamingo Friday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning, all. Today is my main day for preparing for vacation, so I will be popping in and out.
Thank you for starting us off trissie. I hope that you get to see the cottage before you close it for the season.
Ah, the luxury of clean sheets, Gma. Enjoy!
Poor Matilda! It is all for her benefit, but that doesn't mean that she has to like it lol. That is nice of you to offer to bring your friends water and groceries.

Re: Flamingo Friday @ TDD - C&C
Morning all. Kittykat hopefully the ultrasound will go well for Matilda. And can help find how to make her better.
Sounds like a fun vacation lann. Are you getting all those photos books done there? That's awesome.
Gma I got to sleep in clean sheets too. Flannel ones back on the bed now. Cozy. My favorite feel is clean sheets.
1130 is early to bed trissie? Maybe when I was first married. I hope you can sort out if you are going to the cottage without too much trouble.
Anyways I suppose I should get in the shower and do a few things. I think I might do the take ds to school and then work again. A few general straighten things and it won't be too bad in here. Deciding if I should go shopping after work too. I am getting low on fresh stuff. Coffee lasted exactly right I think the plan is Costco tomorrow. There's enough just for tomorrow. So think what I can get there. Hmm I need dog food too I better do that before work.
Shower
S&s both baths and reboot laundry
Put it all away
Make sure carrots get all dry
Empty and reload dw
Finish tidying kitchen all the way
Sweep everywhere
Finish getting ready for work
School run
Pet store for dog food

Re: Flamingo Friday @ TDD - C&C
I wrote a second post yesterday, but I think I forgot to post it. Oh well. I got everything done for the funeral -- but that was it. The slideshow took a LONG TIME to finish. But it's done now. Slide show - writing my talk - lawyer errand - meeting with tech guy - payroll slides + plans. Plus a shopping errand. I think that was pretty much my day. Everyone arrived in the evening, so I got to visit with dh + girls and then ds + F who arrived at 10 pm. Ironically, everyone had gone to bed by them, so I stayed up to greet them.
Slept about 6 hours last night. I'm feeling OK now - coffee is helping. I'm going to need a few long nights at some point. I have exam prep due Thursday next week + midterm tests and drafts to grade, so next week will be a busy week for me at work.
Today - Funeral things
1. Last tweaks to my talk.
2. Figure out how to print out my talk. Dh thinks he found a place.
3. Drop off a few things at the church - quilts, guest book, photo
4. Buy Thank you cards. Write cards.
5. Write checks to put in cards.
6. Burial service @ 2.
7. Set up Macbook for slideshow.
8. Memorial service @ 3.
9. Reception.
Other things:
- jog if I can
- dinner tonight: I have ingredients here to make GF peanut chicken for 6
- start packing; we're going to leave early tomorrow
TaDas!
- up and coffee
- chatting with dh and F
- coffee
- email deletions; weather website
- payroll: checked one practice test; posted one note and replied to 1 student
WEEKLY ACTIVITIES
Fri 2 - burial service/ 3 - Memorial Service/ 3:45 - ? cookie and coffee reception
Sat breakfast with the Cs!/ drive ~ 6 hours back
Sun Church/ host Sunday dinner?
September Brain Dumps
This Week - House - nothing happening here this week
- get 2 guest beds remade with clean sheets
- possibly, polish stone counter tops
- repot my little orchid
This Week - Deskwork

This Week - Errands
General Brain Dump
- progress decluttering clothes - wip
- new phone eventually
- buy queen bed frame + mattress + box springs for dd27's room - wip
