The Taming of the Shrew is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1590 and 1592. The play begins with a framing device, often referred to as the induction, in which a mischievous nobleman tricks a drunken tinker named Christopher Sly into believing he is actually a nobleman himself. The nobleman then has the play performed for Sly's diversion.

The main plot depicts the courtship of Petruchio and Katherina, the headstrong, obdurate shrew. Initially, Katherina is an unwilling participant in the relationship; however, Petruchio "tames" her with various psychological and physical torments, such as keeping her from eating and drinking, until she becomes a desirable, compliant, and obedient bride. The subplot features a competition among the suitors of Katherina's younger sister, Bianca, who is seen as the "ideal" woman. The question of whether the play is misogynistic has become the subject of considerable controversy.

The Taming of the Shrew has been adapted numerous times for stage, screen, opera, ballet, and musical theatre, perhaps the most famous adaptations being Cole Porter's Kiss Me, Kate; McLintock!, a 1963 American Western comedy film, starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara; and the 1967 film of the play, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. The 1999 high-school comedy film 10 Things I Hate About You and the 2003 romantic comedy Deliver Us from Eva are also loosely based on the play.

it translates as "Trapped by Gender" - and deals with how we are forced to play harmful roles due to the gender we were born with. I don't think it has or will ever be tranlated to English, the author deals with local historical and political development that has lead us to where we are now. It's not radical feminism, but it shows how it's a structural problem, as in how most of the society just fights to keep the status quo - even other women who either feel that they had to endure it, or that their sacrifices would be made irrelevant if other women got away with not doing them. Also, how when men are forced to be the strong and unemotional, it leads to higher suicide rates (because they can't admit that they need help, that would be unmanly) and how the "children are to be reared by mothers" actually damages fathers' relationship with their children.

For the first time ever, our Parliament has a full one third of women, and everybody is like "that's not good, were they elected because they were women? Will they be able to handle the stress? What about their poor families?" and all sorts of really stupid questions. And I'm like "come on, have you not noticed there's 50% of women out there and we get to vote and also have opinions?"

(I'm in bed but not sleeping. Stewing. It's 2am here.) They have generally taken decent care of her. But they did not communicate to me that she had any but minor symptoms of COVID. Yet they said she was refusing food and drink, to the point that her output for 24 hour was 360. Absolute critical minimum is 30/hour which should have been 720 in a day. They didn't notify me or anyone. That was early on in her isolation. Since her isolation has ended, she has been getting weaker and weaker. Now they say that I am "force feeding" her, yet when I offered her water tonight, she said oh that tastes good. She is so weak, she cannot squeeze my hand at all, yet they expect her to feed herself apparently. Except they are saying she is refusing food and she has a right to do that. The issue tonight was her artificial tears. She is supposed to have them 4x a day, because her eyes are dry, and she had a serious abrasion because of that. She has forgotten the reason and she often refuses when they ask her if she wants them, instead of telling her it's time for them, and reminding her why she needs them.
I was angry, and should have reminded the staff that we all want what is best for her, and then should have asked if she could think of a way to help mother understand why she needs them instead of just walking away and not administering them.
They have forbidden me from offering her any food or fluids.

Trissie, thank you or the start. Sorry DBD is still unwell, but I'm sure you'll use those extra hours at home well. My take on feminism - if it's all about choice, then in an *ideal* world, a woman should be able to choose whether she wants to work outside the home, or to stay home and keep house / raise children/ volunteer etc. Both choices are equally valid. But , we don't live in an ideal world, and bills need to be paid, and, on the flip side, the lack of good, convenient childcare can sadly hold some women back.

(((Gma))) I'm so very sorry that the NH isn't caring for your DMum as they should be. You are a wonderful daughter, caring so much and advocating for her all this time. No I e could have done more.

Back from my dental appointment. Just a check up, and everything was ok, so I don't have to worry about that for another 6 months. Yesterday I did get the sitting room light fixed, I pruned another rose in the front garden - this one took ages as it was big- and I cleaned upstairs.

Today I want to focus on my back garden - there's still a lot of tidying to do there after the storm at the weekend. Indoors, I need to give downstairs its weekly clean. DH has left for a few days in Leeds for work, so I can take as long as I need to outside, and later put a potato in the oven to bake for my supper.

Gma, more hugs (( )) this seems difficult, to say the least... in France there is a huge importance on the patient's rights, which sounds like a good thing, but within limits.

Trissie yay for another commute-free day. The book sounds like a must-read, but it also sounds like another book only women and 'progressive' people will want to read.

Kittykatt, wtg having the light fixed ! And how nice to have the house to yourself.

Good morning, FFB - how nice to see you popping in! I think care for elderly people over here is more like the French system, but, I fortunately, it's very varied in quality. We were so fortunate with DDeparted FIL, that he retained all his mental faculties, and was able to stay at home (with help/ until the last couple of weeks of his life. And then,.when he did go I to hospital, the staff there were amazing, and it was all about what was best for him, and what would give him the best quality of life.

I need to get off my behind, get changed I to gardening clothes and go outside to make the.most of a dry, mild day. It's mostly cloudy, but the sun is trying to come out, and should be perfect for working in the garden!

Sitting in my garden to take a break . It really is the most perfect day for "working" in the garden - dry, 18 C, just a very gentle breeze, and the sun is coming out. And there's a lot to do out here after the storm. Nothing was damaged, but there's lots of leaves and other debris, and I noticed a couple of big jobs that really need doing "now". As with DH away I have no domestic responsibilities (except to the kitties! ), and I can't rely on the weather being as good tomorrow, I've decided to shift most of today's housework onto tomorrow , and really make the most of being outside today. So I've cut down my big fuchsia, and pulled out all the honeysuckle that was encroaching too far into the border and mulched all that area. And that means I can trim the hedge behind it properly now. I also want to prune another rose on the patio, and do a little more to my climbing rose (I won't finish that today, but that's ok). The patio also needs a good sweep to get rid of the debris and the pots need a good drink. Maybe I can finally water on those nematodes?
