Benjamin of Tudela (fl. c. 12th century), also known as Benjamin ben Jonah, was a medieval Tudelano Jewish traveler who visited Europe, Asia, and Africa in the twelfth century. His vivid descriptions of western Asia preceded those of Marco Polo by a hundred years. With his broad education and vast knowledge of languages, Benjamin of Tudela is a major figure in medieval geography and Jewish history.

The Travels of Benjamin is an important work not only as a description of the Jewish communities, but also as a reliable source about the geography and ethnography of the Middle Ages. Some modern historians credit Benjamin with giving accurate descriptions of everyday life in the Middle Ages. Originally written in Hebrew, his itinerary was translated into Latin and later translated into most major European languages. It received much attention from Renaissance scholars in the sixteenth century.

His journeys reveal the concurrent interconnectedness and diversity of Jewish communities during this time period.

His journey began in Zaragoza, farther down the valley of the Ebro to Tarragona, Barcelona, and Girona, whence he proceeded north to France, then set sail from Marseille. After visiting Genoa, Lucca, Pisa, Florence[10] and Rome, he went to Greece and Constantinople, then set off across Asia. He visited Syria, Lebanon, the Land of Israel, and northern Mesopotamia (which he called Shinar) before reaching Baghdad. From there he went to Persia, then cut back across the Arabian Peninsula to Egypt and North Africa, returning to the Iberian Peninsula in 1173. In his travels, he described a significant Jewish community somewhere around modern-day Ethiopia. While it appears clear that such a community existed, scholars still struggle to decide where in Africa he actually visited—a lack of uniform spelling makes it hard to distinguish what places Benjamin and other contemporary travel writers are actually referencing.

His visit to the ruins outside Mosul is one of the earliest accurate descriptions of the site of ancient Nineveh. He visited 300 cities in all, including many of importance in Jewish history, such as Susa, Sura, and Pumbedita. In addition, he gathered information on many more areas that he heard about in his travels, including China and Tibet. He recorded details on cultures such as that of Al-Hashishin, the hemp smokers, introducing Western Europeans to people and places far beyond their experience.

Good morning Trissie and thank you for another interesting start. I'd never heard of Benjamin of Tudela before!

L.Ann, I'm glad the recipe was a hit.

Bama, you had a very successful trip to the feed store!

Dogged, you got lots done - procrastacomplishments™ Dogged definitely see to work! :D

I'm lying in bed eyeing the tops of the wardrobes.DH"s is looking good after my efforts yesterday. The less said about mine the better - maybe I can do that this evening when DH is at choral? I left the steps out yesterday on purpose to give some encouragement in that area!

Today is very dark and overcast, and both looks and feels like rain. DH decided not to go for his walk this morning, as he understandably didn't want to get wet. So far I e put the last bits out for the dustmen, emptied the hoovers, picked up leaves in the front garden and take Fred out. He decided it was great fun to watch the council workers who have come to do some grass cutting , and were having difficulty backing their truck up our road! We've now shared some Greek yogurt together, and he is now snoring on the kitchen table while I finish my coffee . It still hasn't actually started raining, so I'll go for my walk next - probably walking round the block several times again, so I'm not far away from home if the heavens do open!

Hi, all. I am stuffing down the urge to ride madly off in all directions at once. I want to get outside with Germane because the sun is shining its face off out there, punctuated by periods of clouds, which increasing the FOMO. Gotta get outside now now NOW before the sun goes. Germane was
I missed my db's call yesterday and didn't realize until long after he had gone to bed. So I am looking forward to having a phone visit with him. But when exactly? It's Budget Day in Canada, and I am more invested in this than usual because I am living on the govt pension. The plan is to work part time when I'm ready to go back, but I recognize that we are skidding into a period high unemployment where the entry level jobs will be particularly hard hit. So if I can sit this period out, it's better for me and better for whoever needs the job more. But knowing all of the work that the national govt has to do, reducing pension payouts might be an attractive target. I expect the phone in show on the radio at noon will be about the budget, and the budget speech itself goes on air at four.
Then there's the fact that I have to get my shower before I can walk Germane, and I really should wait until she's out of her reverse-sundowning period so that she can enjoy it properly.
First up was breakfast, so that is done at least. We are already into the radio shows that I want to hear. So what do you do with sudden energy and a sense of urgency when you can't move forward on your actual goals? Procrastaccomplishments! Without them, I would get nothing done.

Thank you for the interesting start, trissie. I had never heard of that explorer, either.

Thank you, Kittykatt. The top of my fridge is looking at the top of your DH's wardrobe enviously, and giving me the side-eye. If it gets together with the top of your wardrobe, we might have to do something about that.

Hi, helia. That sounds like a good dinner to beat Hangry.

Hi, L.Ann. I am thinking of trying to make lentil soup next week. I have enough broth from the picnic shoulder saved up. Any tips?

Hi, Peaches
