Makar(a) Sankrānti (Sanskrit: मकरसङ्क्रान्ति, romanized: Makarasaṅkrānti), (transl. Capricorn Festival) also referred to as Uttarāyana, Makara, or simply Sankrānti, is a Hindu observance and a mid-winter harvest festival in India and Nepal. It is typically celebrated on the 14 January annually (15 January on a leap year), this occasion marks the transition of the sun from the zodiac of Sagittarius (dhanu) to Capricorn (makara). As this transition coincides with the sun's movement from south to north, the festival is dedicated to the solar deity, Surya, and is observed to mark a new beginning. Across India, the occasion is celebrated with numerous multi-day festivals.

The festivities associated with Makar Sankranti are known by various names including Sankranthi or Peddha Panduga in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Khichari in Bhojpuri region, Magh Bihu in Assam, Maghi Saaji in Himachal Pradesh, Makaravilakku in Kerala, Makara sankranti in Karnataka, Maghi Sangrand in Punjab, Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Maghi Sangrand or Uttarain (Uttarayana) in Jammu, Sakrat in Haryana, Sakraat in Rajasthan, Sukarat in central India, Uttarayana in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, Ghughuti in Uttarakhand, Dahi Chura in Bihar, Makar Sankranti in Odisha, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Goa, West Bengal (also called Poush Sankranti or Mokor Sonkranti), Uttar Pradesh (also called Khichidi Sankranti), Uttarakhand (also called Uttarayani) or as simply, Maghe Sankranti (Nepal), Songkran (Thailand), Thingyan (Myanmar), Mohan Songkran (Cambodia), Til Sakraat in Mithila, and Shishur Senkrath (Kashmir). On Makar Sankranti, Surya (Hindu solar deity) is worshipped along with Vishnu and goddess Lakshmi throughout India.

Makar Sankranti is observed with social festivities such as colourful decorations, children going house to house singing and asking for treats in some rural areas, melas (fairs), dances, kite flying, bonfires, and feasts. The Magha Mela is mentioned in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Many observers go to sacred rivers or lakes and bathe in a ceremony of thanks to the Sun. Every twelve years, the Hindus observe Makar Sankranti with Kumbha Mela – one of the world's largest mass pilgrimage, with an estimated 60 to 100 million people attending the event. At this event, they say a prayer to the Sun and bathe at the Prayagaraj confluence of the River Ganga and River Yamuna, a tradition attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. Makar Sankranti is a time of celebration and thanks giving, and is marked by a variety of rituals and tradition.

Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for starting is off. Are we having winter festivals this week? How nice and seasonal!

I want to try and do something towards Christmas, however tiny, every day this week. Yesterday, DH printed off the labels for the Christmas cards we post, and I've crossed through those people who have passed awsy, or who havent sent is a card for the last couple.of years. Postage is eye wateringly expensive these days!

Today DH goes to the office, and, as its raising, I need to concentrate on the house. My aim is to finish decluttering/ deep cleaning the bedroom. Also, as I have a relatively free week, to phone the plumber, as the kitchen tap is dripping more with the cold weather ( or maybe I could WhatsApp him? That way I could send a picture). I also need to contact Jones Bookmakers either by phone / email. I need to work on the photos, even just 30 minutes, as I didn't do this yesterday. Washing Hoover filters would be good, probably not rhe upstairs one as I'll be using it, but I could do the others. For Christmas work, I could maybe gather all the cards I've bough so they're in one place and put them in the box. Oh, and the Sainsbury's order should arrive this evening, with the extras for the parish lunch. So I think there's enough to keep me busy for one day!

◕‿◕ * * * Good Morning! * * * ◕‿◕

Trissie thanks for another interesting start... so many words with fascinating spelling in just one paragraph. So it's more or less a Thanksgiving festival, isn't it ?

Lovely idea Kittykatt ! Then maybe have a list ready of tiny things you can do on a given day - some days things come up and we have difficulty making progress on our own goals however small.

Lurking from payroll...

Hello, FFB!

I've made progress on those little jobs this morning, with the result that the plumber should be coming round this evening to look at the kitchen tap. :D So, I spent a bit longer than usual tidying the kitchen and especially the sink area. I also looked at freezer again, ashworth Black Friday coming up I was hoping for some bargains. But none so far. The men negotiables are: it has to fit in the space under the worktop, be frost free , and be reasonably priced. Fortunately its not desperate, so I can aff to wait.

Fred has been for his walk as the rain has stopped, but the wind is cold. I'm going to take the rubbish out next , and go for a walk well wrapped up!

Good morning ~ kitty ~ trissie ~ Frenchi ~ and the rest of the SHE Peeps!

I enjoyed cuoping on all the Saturday events, todos, tadas, & antics.
Gma ~ what a beautiful sentiment on knitting perfection from your df. I love that.

Had a fun day with Li'l H yesterday. I couldn't have asked for a better first reaction to the condo. We spent about 15 minutes there picking her for horseback riding lesson and then she wanted to go back afterwards - for a whole hour! I'm getting oodles of ideas of how to decorate it for next year's holidays. It was a game day - checkers, mancala, and charades - which was a hoot. We have a kids' version. Li'l H was pretty good at it. It's been designated a Christmas Eve game.

Today's short list:
• gym
• Credit Union to sign some papers
• Walmart to buy a small, fake tree
• grocery shopping
• Call "contractor" people
• yada, yada, yada
