Re: Macaroon Cookie Monday @ TDD - C&C
A macaroon is a small cake or cookie, originally made from ground almonds, egg whites, and sugar, but now often with coconut or other nuts. They may also include jam, chocolate, or other flavorings.
Macaroons can be traced to a French monastery of the 8th century in the city of Cormery. Later, two Benedictine nuns, Sister Marguerite and Sister Marie-Elisabeth, came to Nancy, France seeking asylum during the French Revolution. The two women paid for their housing by baking and selling macaroons, and thus became known as the "Macaroon Sisters".
Macaroons became a popular treat for Jews on Passover because they had no flour or leavening, as macaroons are leavened by egg whites.
Recipes for macaroons appeared in recipe books at least as early as 1725 (Robert Smith's Court Cookery, or the Complete English Cook), and use egg whites and almond paste. Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management (1861) includes a typical traditional recipe. Over time, coconut was added to the ground almonds and, in certain recipes, replaced them. Potato starch is sometimes included in the recipe to give the macaroons more body.

Re: Macaroon Cookie Monday @ TDD - C&C
So, this journey into the cookie sweetness will have me finally discover the English terms to the cookies I have been clumsily translating for years! Yes, I do make macaroon cookies. Coconut macaroon cookies, to be specific, and they are called "kisses" (pusinky) in Czech. From now on, I will know they are macaroons (and vanilla rolls - vanilkove rohlicky - are crescent cookies
)

Re: Macaroon Cookie Monday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. I'm going to enjoy this week's topic!
Jist to add to the confusion in nomenclature, over here, Coconut kisses can either refer to a macaroon type biscuit, or a confection made from dessicated coconut and condensed milk! Oh, and to make things even more confusing, here in the UK we would usually refer to something sweet and hard /crunchy as a "biscuit" (I think the US "biscuit" is more like a scone?) , something softer and chewier as a."cookie" and something hard and savoury.as.a."cracker"! Examples include shortbread biscuits , peanut butter cookies and Jaco's crackers. And, of course, the "rule" is not absolute, and there are always exceptions. But no one is particularly bothered, as they're all delicious!
The other weird thing is that the term "biscuit" or."cookie" is often dropped ( and assumed) seemingly randomly in conversation, eg, "Would you like a piece of shortbread or a chocolate digestive?) But kept for others - ("Would you like a peanut butter cookie? ") I've no idea why this should be, maybe Helia with her greater technical knowledge of English would know? This kind of thing is one reason why I greatly.admire anyone who learns English as a second (or subsequent) language!!
Dogged we watched "Dead Man's Folly". yesterday. Apparently it was filmed at Greenway, Agatha Christie's house.
Gma, that was so kind of you to help that young girl. WTG with progress on your kitchen!
DH may be taking today off sick again as he still doesn't.feel.wuite "right". He has another Dr appointment on the 17th to check the new meds are doing their job and also agreeing with him. On one hand this will be good practice for his retirement . On the other, I'm used to having the house to myself on Mondays, so I can get on with the housework uninterrupted! Fortunately today I'll be working upstairs, so I can hopefully keep him occupied downstairs! Maybe I can persuade him to out some Christmas cards in envelopes together with the newsletter.amd.stick the label on the front of the envelope??
I also need to think about decorating.today. I could get everything for the sitting room out from its storage space, ready to do once I've cleaned in there tomorrow? Also the wreath for the front door. I usually wind lights round the canopy over the front door as well, but that's going to have to wait until it / when it stops raining!
The other pressing thing is my shoebox, which has to be done by this coming Sunday. It would be good if I could get it done by Thursday and take it to church with me then.

Re: Macaroon Cookie Monday @ TDD - C&C
mmmm, macaroons are yummy! Once, the baker at mother's nursing home made a large batch - using angel food cake mix, shredded coconut, almond extract and just 1/2 cup of water. She said they were really easy. I was there the evening she made them, and I thought they were really good! Haven't tried baking them, but I might try them if I decide to give plates of cookies as Christmas gifts locally. Or I will bake small breads. Or ...
Finally got to the bag of mail from when I was gone. I haven't been back a week yet, so I need to remind myself I haven't procrastinated. There are 14 first class envelopes to mail, and it's well after midnight, so those will wait until Monday afternoon, after Bible study, Post office mailing, and a stop at my retirement advisor office.
I'm going to bed with a [sort of] clean kitchen floor. I really worked on about 85% of it. Not up to my totally clean standard, but certainly so much cleaner than it has been for several weeks. Clean enough that I can now work on the counters, then the table - but no longer tonight - too far after midnight. I might just have to take the mail to Mother's, where the table is clear, and I can acknowledge any sympathy cards, and make a phone call about 1 bill. Soon after Christmas, I will have to make several calls to various catalogues, as mother gets SOOOO many at her house. Cancelling them will relieve my needing to carry mail from the front door to the recycle bin several times a week.
Our forecast is warmer on Monday - so Iwill look forward to getting up. last night I dreamed I was putting on my swim suit and enjoying the lake in the summer. Oh, I was so unhappy to wake up to 0 F (-18 C) in reality outside!

Re: Macaroon Cookie Monday @ TDD - C&C
WTG on all your progress in the kitchen, Gma. Sleep well - you deserve it! BTW, your current temperatures are what I call "freezer" temperatures - similar to or even colder than my freezer!
I'm up, showered and dressed and have managed all my exercises and stretches, despite constant interruptions. I need to prioritise these for my well being, so when DH does retire, I need to let him know, kindly and sensitively , that I need 30 minutes or so uninterrupted to get them done. I prefer first thing as I'm fresh then -late at night doesn't work to well, as I'm tired then and often just fall into bed .
I think the rain may have stopped for now, so next on the list is to walk Freddie!

Re: Macaroon Cookie Monday @ TDD - C&C
The rain did stop long enough for me to take Fred out, do some tidying in my garden and go for a walk round the estate. I felt the first spots of rain as I came down the steps to the house. Just had coffee.with DH,.which was nice, especially as we had a gingerbread man apiece, and kow I need to get started on the house
