Figgy pudding or fig pudding is any of many medieval Christmas dishes, usually sweet or savoury cakes containing honey, fruits and nuts. In later times, rum or other distilled alcohol was often added to enrich the fruitiness of the flavour.
Medieval cooking commonly employed figs in both sweet and savoury dishes. One such dish is fygey, in the 14th century cookbook The Forme of Cury.
Take blanched almonds, grind them, mix with water and wine, quartered figs, whole raisins. Add in powdered ginger, clarified honey, boil it well and salt it, and serve.

Good morning Trissie and thank you for starting us off. Figgy pudding is part of our heritage, but I dont think Ibe ever eaten it and I've certainly never made it!

Laura , Gma has more good advice. It's a difficult time of transition for your family. Don't forget to look after you!
Gma, you're right about hospice over here - the aim is to make the person as comfortable as possible, with a emphasis on quality of life in their remaining days, weeks or sometimes months. It's very different in appearance and atmosphere from the hospital, ours has its own garden that patients can look out on, and some may actually be wheeled out to enjoy it. Also pets are welcome to come amd visit their owners, which can be very important for those patients who are still responsive. One of my friends was director.of the local hospice before she retired, and said it was very hard work, and could be draining, especially when a patient passed away, but ultimately very rewarding, because good end of life care is so important.
Today BIL.comes for the weekend,
so I need to get the spare room ready. It would also be a good idea to get the clean towels and sheets out ready for us on Sunday . I need to do find my Christmas duvet cover set, which has the pattern of green leaves with little red berries. I also need to remember to remind BIL to keep the spare room door shut, in order to keep the cats out, especially Freddie who has many spiky parts, and Matilda who has no concept of personal property,.and considers what's yours is also hers!

Happy Friday!
Gotta admit, until today I was convinced that the lyrics go "bring me some piggy pudding" and I was imagining a kind of black pudding made with pork blood! Now I am educated and know there is a figgy pudding and also a piggy pudding and there's actually two kinds of piggy puddings - a savory, apple-and-sausage bake often made with cornbread, and a sweet, layered dessert with a nutty crust, cream cheese, pudding, and whipped topping, sometimes called Miss Piggy Pudding. The things we learn every day!
I am not caught up on posts this week. But I've noticed that lauralind's mom is in hospital/care because her primary carer, the dad, just kinda snapped? laura, this may be hard now, but I think it's best for everybody. You were running yourself ragged trying to do it all, and it's good that somebody made the decision for you. I mean, with declining health, especially mental presence, sometimes people delay the decision till way too late and then may regret because something bad happened that wouldn't have happened had the person been in 24/7 care facility.
kittykatt, good luck handling everything with another person this weekend! How cute that you have a special set of Christmas duvet covers! I'd love to, but can't really justify the space that would take if it's not used regularly!
DS is starting school later today, so he's the only kid home yet. I have tons to do for work and I also need to drive to the post office, which closes at 11 (because a parcel was deposited there instead of delivered and this post office decided that the very best thing to do before Christmas is to limit its opening hours to three hours per day). The house needs some loving (the tough kind of love), and laundry is overflowing, but we have no weekend plans so I can finally catch up. Unfortunately, still not feeling any Christmas spirit - with the things going on in my extended family, I keep getting dragged in one drama after another, and work is not helping either. But I will tackle everything one thing at a time!

You e certainly got a lot on, Trissie! I can sympathise with your Post office woes. We currently have a temporary postman, who neither speaks nor reads English! Yes, the numbering on some of the roads on our estate is "eccentric" but there are plenty of signposts to help. And trying to give directions to someone who clearly doesn't understand what.
you're saying, is ... challenging. Still, I am optimistic - at the beginning of the pandemic Amazon took on lots of extra delivery drivers who to begin with hardly spoke English, and they soon picked it up, so hopefully the same will happen with our postman.
DH has very kindly moved all his work stuff out of the spare room, saving me time and effort, so I'd better get moving and tackle the rest of it!

So, DH has been launched. No sign of BIL yet -apparently he is driving down a d meeting DH and several of his friends at their lunch location. Apparently after lunch, BIL will drive himself and DH back here, drop off the car and then and have some drinks together. It all sounds complicated, but hopefully they know what they're doing.
Ive got the spare room ready to receive a guest, which did take longer than expected, despite DH's help. But it's done now, and Jude is already sulking as I've had to move her food bowl (she's a creature in of habit!). But she's been pacified as I've turned on the electric.blanket on our bed. Ive also got the clean towels and sheets out from the airing cupboard, taken Fred for his walk and written those last few Christmas cards. Next I need to quickly hoover the sitting room, then I'm going to make the most of a beautiful sunny day and go for a walk so I can deliver those Christmas cards.

Last night, dh came home -- and then I didn't get anything else done. I'm up this morning later than planned -- and responded to some messages from dsil re: her daughter's possible stay with us next fall. We would need to become legal guardians, and she balked at that. But it can be done temporarily, and it doesn't give us the same rights as her parents -- from what I can tell. I will look into that for her.
Today: I'll be hard pressed to get everything done. I need to vacuum the corner of the guest room and dust. I still need to put together the practice exam. I'm having coffee with MM at 9:30. Rh arrives this morning - not sure when; I won't have time to chat with him for a long time because I'll need to get ready for work. Then, I'm at work 1:30 - 3:30. Dh and I have dinner reservations at a favorite restaurant at 6:30; dh made them.
I have 1:15 before I need to head otd.

Last night, dh came home -- and then I didn't get anything else done. I'm up this morning later than planned -- and responded to some messages from dsil re: her daughter's possible stay with us next fall. We would need to become legal guardians, and she balked at that. But it can be done temporarily, and it doesn't give us the same rights as her parents -- from what I can tell. I will look into that for her.
Today: I'll be hard pressed to get everything done. I need to vacuum the corner of the guest room and dust. I still need to put together the practice exam. I'm having coffee with MM at 9:30. Rh arrives this morning - not sure when; I won't have time to chat with him for a long time because I'll need to get ready for work. Then, I'm at work 1:30 - 3:30. Dh and I have dinner reservations at a favorite restaurant at 6:30; dh made them.
I have 1:15 before I need to head otd.
