Calendula officinalis, Mary's gold, common marigold, the pot marigold, Scotch marigold, or ruddles, is a flowering plant in the daisy family, Asteraceae. It is probably native to southern Europe, but its long history of cultivation makes its precise origin unknown, and it is widely naturalised. The florets are edible and the plant has historically been used as medicine.
The names marigold and Mary's gold were given by the English people to honour Mary, mother of Jesus, who was said to wear "a crown of gold that circles the earth".

Calendula officinalis is a short-lived aromatic herbaceous perennial, growing to 80 cm (31 in) tall, with sparsely branched lax or upright stems. The leaves are 5–17 cm (2–7 in) long, hairy on both sides, and occasionally waved or weakly toothed.

The flowers are yellow or orange and daisy-like, comprising or flowerhead 4–7 cm (1+1⁄2–3 in) diameter surrounded by two rows of hairy braxts. In the wild plant they have a single ring of ray florets surrounding the central disc florets. The disc florets are tubular and hermaphroditic, and generally of a more intense orange-yellow color than the female, tridentate, peripheral ray florets. The flowers may appear all year long where conditions are suitable. The fruit is a thorny curved achene.

Bama, I'm sorry that this isnt going to sound very helpful, but sometimes separate rooms, or at the very least a bed made up in another room where you can retreat to get some quality sleep, can be the best solution. Sleep is very important to health and well being, not just an add on!

Gma, WTG with the snow clearing -I can understand why you want to keep on top of it and not let a huge mass accumulate!

Sleep well, Dogged! You got lots done yesterday, and your apartment must smell wonderful with the pasta sauce cooking.

Today DH goes to the office and I'm at home. 8 think the weather is set to be mild ( it's 11 C alr ready!) and wet. It's almost certainly going to be too wet to do anything in my garden, but it would be good to go for a walk round the estate (it's far too muddy for the valley park!) if the rain eases. I have my usual Monday routine for the house, plus it would be good to do a little deep cleaning on in the kitchen , and there are a couple of admin jobs that need doing. That's probably too ambitious for today, but at least I have plenty to choose from!

NOT weather twins today, kittykatt - it's -13C here!

We are a sad household today. We had to put our 19 year old kitty to sleep yesterday. She was slowly deteriorating, chronic kidney failure and movement issues, and then when we came home from a visit with DSIL Saturday, we noticed she was throwing up and lethargic. It didn't get any better on Sunday (the vet opens at 7pm) and she couldn't even stand so I knew it was time the make the call. The kids were devastated, as expected, but we said our good-byes and petted her till she fell asleep after the sedatives were administered. I'm keeping DBD home today to give her more time to cope; DS is skipping first half of the day (he has a test at 5th period, so he needs to be there for that one, otherwise he'd stay home too), but the twins wanted to go to school. I told them to call me if it became too much, I'd go and get them.

I'm glad I can be working from home today. While I am the person who deals with grief by being active, it's still too much. This kitty has been around for almost half of my life, she's been with us longer than our kids. I know I made the right call, we could have fought and maybe she would have had a month or a couple months, but the ups and downs and the constant "you need to say goodbye in case today's vet visit is the one" would have been emotionally wrecking for the kids (and for me too), and the kitty's quality of life, when she wouldn't even be able to move around, would be very low. But knowing I made the right call still doesn't make it any easier

Kinda... if this is the preview of 2026, can I cancell my subscription? Every day, there's something bad happening either in the world, or at home, or, on some days, both, and it's getting worse by the day

(((Trissie and family))) I'm so very, very sorry about the loss of your DKitty. Even when you "know" with your head that it's the kindest thing to do, it doesn't make it any easier. I know you gave her the very best life, and I'm sure she knew how much she was loved.

Trissie and family, I am so sorry about your dkitty. Your Kitty had an amazingly long life. I had to put mine down just shy of 20 years too. I don't believe in hurrying death along, for anyone. I thought it was his time the week before, he rallied a little; I put a kitty kennel in the bathroom so he had a "safe cave", and for sure I didn't want him to go hide in the basement, and make me have to go looking for him. I finally did take him in. You very much did the right thing. But still it's hard, and the kids love dkitty too, so this is a grief and learning experience for them also. Did you keep a little bit of fur as a memory?

I just found my "filing box" for 2024. There's hardly anything in it, because I hadn't figured out how to file anything. I think I have it figured out now, as I did a great job of getting 2025 into folders as I cleared the K and DR tables, plus the piano (and a few other places). I know I need to have a place to put things when they come in the daily mail, and now I do!
Soooo, it's time to go to bed, but I think I have a place to start tomorrow, after Bible study.
I have accomplished wiping off the counters, baking some easy refrigerator cookies (dough was already in the refrigerator and needed to be baked), unloading and loading the DW, and cleaning the sinks. Plus sorting through greeting cards, making sure every one has an envelope, and separating them into their respective categories. I have enough Christmas cards to send for 3-5 years, and I'll have to remember everybody's birthdays for a long time, plus sympathy and get well. People aren't in the hospital needing get well cards like they used to.
How did it get to be 2am here? Last time I looked at my watch it was half hour after midnight.... Guess I was really focused on those cards!

Ive made the most of a quiet house (DH at the office, all the cats asleep) to tackle a difficult email that's been OMM. I couldn't do anything about it before now, as I was waiting to hear from someone else first, but now I've had that reply (Not a helpful one, but never mind!) I've been able to collate all my information and finally send the email with all the attachments I needed. Hopefully this will be a satisfactory end to the matter, but some people do seem to positively enjoy dragging things out! Ive had an automated reply so I know it's arrived safely. (And, of course, I've kept copies of everything!)

I've also done a little financial paperwork.I have to keep this to relatively short bursts of around 30 minutes, as otherwise I start to become very unproductive. But I now have some food for thought I can mull over while doing other jobs today. (I'm not sure how I'm going to manage this type of thing when DH retires, but I'll worry about that when it happens. I'm sure there will be opportunities! )
