Re: Common Toad Tuesday
The common toad, European toad, or in Anglophone parts of Europe, simply the toad (Bufo bufo, from Latin bufo "toad"), is a toad found throughout most of Europe (with the exception of Ireland, Iceland, parts of Scandinavia, and some Mediterranean islands), in the western part of North Asia, and in a small portion of Northwest Africa.
Common toads are amphibians, breeding in ponds during the spring and spending much of the rest of the year feeding in woodland, gardens, hedgerows and tussocky grassland. They hibernate over winter, often under log piles, stones or even in old flower pots!
Toads are famous for their mass migrations back to their breeding ponds on the first warm, damp evenings of the year, often around St. Valentine's Day. Common toads tend to breed in larger, deeper ponds than common frogs. Toad tadpoles contain toxins that make them unpleasant for predators to eat, allowing them to survive in deep ponds containing fish, which would eat the tadpoles of frogs. Adult toads also contain these toxins, stored in their skin glands.
Common toads mainly feed on slugs, snails and other invertebrates, but larger toads have been known to eat small slow worms and grass snakes, and even harvest mice.
The common toad has olive-brown, warty skin, copper eyes and short back legs. It walks rather than hops, and lays its spawn in long strings around aquatic plants, with two rows of eggs per string.
In the UK, cities and towns pose a threat to common toads; busy roads often block migration paths, making it difficult for them to reach their breeding ponds. If more than 1,000 toads are known to hop across a road in a particular spot, it is dubbed a 'toad crossing'. On suitable nights for migration, volunteer groups (known as 'toad patrols') gather at these spots to help the toads safely across the road.

Re: Common Toad Tuesday
Good morning everyone and happy Tuesday!
Dogged, I'm glad Germane.seems.to be ok -how very scary for you both.
Gma, you're a very good friend, and how wise of her to plan her funeral wishes well in advance.
KitKat, it's just Freddie's regular monthly injection for his arthritis, although with his dislike of the vets, it's an Event!
An early start for me today, as Freddie has his appointment for his monthly injection and I need to get him caged in good time! We are forecast rain
today, but it's too dark to see what's going out outside ATM. I'm hoping it will hold off until I get back home.
Have a good day, everyone!

Re: Common Toad Tuesday
Thank you for starting us off, Kittykatt. I love toads! Poor Ireland--first they missed out on snakes, then moles and now toads!?! To misquote Lady Bracknell, to lose one species may be viewed as misfortune; to lose three begins to look like carelessness.
We'll cheer you on from the sidelines, brave soul, as you bring Freddie in for his appointment.
Germane has taken herself off to bed in the bathroom. I'm just going to have another look for that bath mat for her, and then head to bed myself.
Good night/day!

Re: Common Toad Tuesday
I'm up in the middle of the night with my dog Millie. I've posted about her over in PWYC - she either has a blockage or is extremely constipated or something. She's been out in our yard off and on in the last hour and a half trying to poop. Left a message late this afternoon for the vet that we normally see, who is back in the office Tuesday afternoon. This is awful. I may just call when they open and see if one of their vets can see her - surely she can't continue like this....
Dh and I had dinner out with our very dfriends A and V tonight.
Looking for company tonight.

Sleep well, Dogged!
(((Twins))) I agree that Millie needs to see a vet ASAP - I'm not a dog expert, but this doesn't sound .like.normal behaviour to me. Do you have an emergency vet you can ring, or failing that, can you ring as soon as the vet practice opens and request an "urgent same day appointment"? It might be a good idea not to feed Millie after midnight ( with cats they can still drink water before anaesthetic, so I'm guessing it's the same for dogs?), in case she needs something like an x-ray/ scan which would require anaesthetic, or even if she just needs an enema (if she is not cooperative!) Also, if DMillie will not tolerate being examined, then she could be sedated. Sending prayers.for your peace of mind and for Millie's recovery.

Re: Common Toad Tuesday
Back from the vet. Freddie was surprisingly well behaved (for him!) with just some hissing and grumbling, so for once, no one was treated to his usual performance of snarling and swearing.
He's had some biscuits for being a "good boy" and we've shared some Greek yogurt. Ive picked up a few leaves in the front garden and emptied the hoover, so now I have no excuse not to start the housework!
Interesting aside: yesterday evening, DH was complaining that coats in the hall fell off the hooks when he walked past. I calmly pointed out that all except two of the coats were, in fact, his, and went back to the book I was reading. This morning, DH has proudly announced that he has put his big winter coat back upstairs,.and his fleece.jacket.to be washed. Progress!

Re: Common Toad Tuesday
(((Twins))), that does sound serious. The advice given around here is just show up at opening hour and ask to be seen by first vet available. I haven’t done that yet so not sure how well it would go over but I have a half hour drive to get anywhere so I’d rather go and risk it than wait for them to tell me to come in. They are aware that emergency situations happen so should get you seen. Please keep us posted.
“DH was complaining that coats in the hall fell off the hooks when he walked past“ hmm, odd how that happens lol. My dh gets his meds in the mail in a cooler, he got some last week and the box has stayed on the dining room table, he pushes it to my side and when I go by I push it back to his. This went on all weekend until yesterday, when he asked me if I wanted his box and I said no. It’s finally gone. I won’t mention the pile of paper he is leaving on the table since I cleared it off last week.
Looks like Dogged is sampling the “sauce” so may not be here for awhile. Sweet dreams Dogged. Hope today is a better day.
Well, I’m glad I wasn’t eating when I read today’s topic lol. I gag if I see any sort of amphibian, marine life, etc for some odd reason. I thought I had outgrown it but every so often it comes back.
I do have my breakfast in front of me, just thought I’d stop by here before I eat. Idk why I woke so early, around 3:40, but here I am, wide awake.
Done:
Spot clean floor
Played daily games
Make breakfast, log in app
Dogs out and in
Empty microwave of leftover biscuits, gave to dogs
Took out some ribs from freezer, they’re pretty old but frozen, will let thaw to see if they’re frostbitten or can be eaten
♥ Wake each day expecting good things to happen! ♥
