Re: Charles Filiger Friday @ TDD - C&C
Charles Filiger (28 November 1863, Thann – 11 January 1928, Brest) was a French Symbolist painter. He was one of the artists who associated with Gauguin at Pont-Aven in Brittany.
The son of a wallpaper manufacturer in Mulhouse, Filiger first studied decorative arts before specializing in painting at the Académie Colarossi in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1889 and 1890. He arrived in Pont-Aven in 1888 and went on to Le Pouldu staying at the Buvette de la Plage where Gauguin was also a guest. Other artists who joined the colony in the late 1880s and early 1890s included Paul Sérusier, Charles Laval, Meijer de Haan, Armand Séguin, Henry Moret and Émile Jourdan. From 1890, he received a monthly payment of 100 francs from the artists' patron Count Antoine de La Rochefoucauld who was thus able to select Filiger's best works for himself while the remainder were exhibited at Le Barc de Boutteville, Le Salon de la Rose + Croix and other Paris galleries.
After Gauguin's departure in 1895, the other artists soon dispersed. Filiger made frequent moves in the area. After La Rochefoucauld terminated his monthly allowance, he lived in poverty in Kersulé, a hamlet near le Pouldu. He became an alcoholic and drugged himself on ether. After a period in hospital in 1905, he spent four years in a little inn in Gouarec. Breaking his ties with friends and family, from 1911 he lived in Arzano. In 1914, his sister paid for his board at a hotel in Tregunc. When the owners moved to Plougastel the following year, he moved with them for the remainder of his life. He died an alcoholic in January 1928 after being hospitalized in Brest.
André Breton who bought several of Filiger's works considered him to be a surrealist, not strictly within the Pont-Aven school. Nor did Émile Bernard see him as a disciple of Gauguin, characterizing him as a mixture of Byzantine and Breton popular art forms. In Pont-Aven he remained a mystic and a recluse. The area provided fertile ground for his mystical imagery. Indeed, his geometric approach and expressionless faces in subjects such as Virgin and Child (1892) show his interest in early Italian painting and the Italian tradition. His landscapes, for example Breton Shore, reflect Gauguin's abstract quality and simplification. Jan Verkade, who met him in Le Pouldu commented: "He produced very little but I have seen some very beautiful gouaches of his; they are mainly religious paintings, reminiscent of Byzantine and primitive Italian works, but quite personal and quite modern."

Re: Charles Filiger Friday @ TDD - C&C
Happy Friday!
Working from home today, and all the kids have left and I have about 45 minutes before I need to clock in, so I better use it!
Never made it here yesterday - grocery days are not the best for getting anything else done. Also, it's not helping that I once again had to work overtime - work is just so busy lately and shows no sign of slowing down. But since I can never get everything done, I will do what I can in the time I should spend working today and that will be it. The house and the garden need me too

Re: Charles Filiger Friday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning,Trissie, and thank you for starting us off. What a wise attitude to have with the way you balance the needs or work, home and garden (I hope there's something in it for you, too!)
I slept in thos morning, because I could!
I gave everyone so e extra biscuit for their night time snack last night, which , although probably bad for weight loss, meant that I didn't have complaints about being hungry before I was ready to wake up!
Today is cold and grey and looks like more rain, so I'm going to concentrate on on the house this morning before I need to leave for my appointment (I need to leave early as parking is going to be a problem - there is a funeral et the church this afternoon, so, of course , I really can't park there). I also need to pick up DH's prescription - I meant to do that yesterday, but by the time I got home after my podiatrist appointment and stopping in off at the community post office to drop off the old broadband kit, I really didn't want to go out again in the cold wind and the rain. DH is also coming home sometime today, so I need to use rest of this time wisely!

Re: Charles Filiger Friday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning trissie and Kittykatt!
Thanks for the start trissie. I like Filiger's work:)
Bake something sweet sounds like a pleasant activity... but you have a LOT on your list
Kittykatt - I slept in (about 20 minutes) as well . It felt so good:) First time in weeks I got 7 hours of sleep.. (Now I know why old ladies used to discuss sleep all the time... )
I did not get back until late yesterday but it was a good day. Spent about an hour with dfriend ; we haven't seen each other since December.
Today we have another 'Special Weather Statement' - this time, it's snow. These weather statements are becoming regular... In less than a week, this is the 3rd one.
Hoping to get some housework done. I have a class at 10 (I think). I have a store return that may not get done today. Boots need to be dropped off for repair. Ddog needs a walk.
My body is feeling last night's workout:) (I did make it to the gym on time)
Starting MR

Re: Charles Filiger Friday @ TDD - C&C
I missed you yesterday, trissie. Thank you for another artistic start. I never took an art history class, so there's a lot I don't know about art. I'm always very impressed, though -- I have no artistic talent! LOL! I totally get it about grocery days. Sorry about the busyness at work. Are things OK-ish with the coworker guy now?
So glad you got to visit with a friend, kitkat! That's so important! If your weather is similar to ours, maybe it's a good day to stay inside.
We're weather twins today, Kitty. It is cold and gray here too - and very windy. And it is sleeting. I hope the appointment is quick and easy.
Today: The weather is not very inspiring; it's still semi-dark outside and very windy. We currently have sleet. I can see it and hear it hitting the windows. . . We got a dusting of snow last night, and the website says it is 34F. I have an EPT interview at noon and my work out with AS at 1-2. Other things: progress on payroll course overviews and vocab lists for S3, order wedding gift, read dh's chapter, towel laundry, perhaps decluttering? Perhaps I can get to the S.A. to drop off bags of give-away items, mainly my mom's. Dh and I will have our weekly dinner date tonight.
The birds are eating a lot at the feeder; I may need to refill it today.

Re: Charles Filiger Friday @ TDD - C&C
Another day, another dollar or something like that.
I’m up, barely, after staying up way too late last night. Seems like my phone kept going off yesterday, people who I don’t want to talk to, so now I have a sense of dread. Nothing bad, I’m just not a phone person. Gotta move a muscle, change a thought, get busy and tackle to dos, or nap.
♥ Wake each day expecting good things to happen! ♥
