Re: Swallowtail Butterfly Saturday
The Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) is a large, strong-flying butterfly, with a wing span range (male to female):of 80-90mm. It has pale yellow wings with black veins and blue margins
This is one of our rarest and most spectacular butterflies. The British race britannicus is a specialist of wet fenland and is currently restricted to the Norfolk Broads. Here the adults can be seen flying powerfully over open fen vegetation, stopping to feed on flowers such as thistles and Ragged-Robin.
The butterfly probably declined within its range during the twentieth century but has benefited over the last few decades from conservation management aimed at increasing open fen vegetation. There are also scattered records of migrants of the continental race.
The native British race feeds solely on Milk-parsley (Peucedanum palustre). Occasional migrants of the continental race gorganus use a variety of umbellifers such as Wild Carrot (Daucus carota) and Wild Angelica (Angelica sylvestris).
The British race britannicus breeds only in open fens and marshes that support vigorous growths of Milk-parsley. The butterfly prefers areas of mixed fen usually dominated by sedge, or sometimes reed, which are cut periodically and contain tall, prominent foodplants. The occasional migrants can be found in almost any habitat but are most frequently seen on grassland near the south coast of England.

Re: Swallowtail Butterfly Saturday
Good morning, everyone, and happy Saturday!
Bama, I would love to cat sit for you in August, if it wasn't for such small inconsequential barriers such as several thousand miles distance to travel twice a day!
Dogged, when you've done something that involves so much concentration and effort like the taxes, you deserve to take the rest of the day off!
Today is going to be another beautiful sunny day. Matilda is being very Matilda-ish and decided that 5.45 am was a good time to wake up
so she's had a nearly breakfast , and Ive drawn back the curtains so we can watch the sun rise together.
I have women's breakfast at 9 am, but after that I have a completely free day, so I'm planning to plant those pansies I bought yesterday into pots, and then move those pots of daffodils that have gone over onto the back steps.amd replace them.woth the pansies. That should see me through until the end of April / beginning of May, when I'll buy my summer geraniums, and then hopefully a.bit longer still, until the geraniums.come into flower.
I also need to work on my response to the DEFRA consultation (I can do that while sitting in my garden!
) and sort out lunch for tomorrow (that's a job for early evening when the temperature has dropped once more!)
Have a good day, everyone!

Oops, nearly forgot, SHEM!
"There was nothing like a Saturday - unless it was the Saturday leading up to the last week of school and into summer vacation. That of course was all the Saturdays of your life rolled into one big shiny ball."

Re: Swallowtail Butterfly Saturday
◕‿◕ * * * Good Morning! * * * ◕‿◕
Kittykatt, thanks for the start, and for the SHEM, and for a lovely cat picture. Yes it's perfect gardening weather !
Another busy week. Totally not CUOP-ed.
Boss is now away for the coming week and two more payroll days after that. She was full of stress until her last day on Thursday and asked repeatedly for things, files, reports, while the statutory auditors were here. It should have been over by Wednesday but on Thursday around 3.30pm she asked for two important reports to be given to her before she left for her 10 days off. I had to leave payroll by 5.30 like everyday so it was a challening task. Coudl'tn she have asked earlier, or given a forewarning of some sort ? I managed just in time. She would love me to do over time, I know she's envious that I leave everyday on time, she's a top manager and can't do thtat - I think she could, with discipline and organisation
This morning I have a "café céramique", like a café where you paint on an earthenware piece like a mug or plate. A birthday present from MrNG last year, my bday is actually beginning of April
and the voucher has to be used within a year. You're supposed to do it with friends or families but the introvert in me will be delighted to enjoy some alone-ness.
Other news : myDUncle S-- will visit and spend the night, 2 weeks from now, Fri 3rd. Also I had a few unpleasant health events this week and I need to schedule more appts in the coming weeks or months, nothing really bad but annoying.
TADAs
up around 6, no insomnia before that
talks with MrNG about various things
tea
TODO
MrNG takes care of the kids and sports and stuff until lunch
drive to nearby city for café céramique
maybe an errand on the way back
... and so many things to do in the house. And much cleaning (because of my DUncle's upcoming visit)

Re: Swallowtail Butterfly Saturday
Frenchie, I so get the "use it in one year" problem - my cooking class, a gift at Christmas 2024, was luckily good to BOOK for one year, cause I took it in January 2026! Have fun and don't let stupid boss thoughts spoil your weekend!
And kittykatt is socializing too! Yay!
I am not socializing. I however need to get new swimsuit for DBD, who is leaving for a 5 day school organized swim course on Monday morning, so I guess I will socialize with random strangers in the store!
It's grey and cold outside, and the garden is not inviting, but still I need to continue on the roses. We have this arch around the walk from the pedestrian gate which has to be carefully trimmed else there's no walking through it
but you also kinda want it nice and blooming even inside because it's lovely, so it's a fight every year.
We also finally have confirmation that the tap water is drinkable again (there was chemical contamination at the water company), but now we have to let water run to clear out the pipes. I wasn't overly worried about it (because I can actually read the reports and understand that "double the allowed value" means "you're getting as much in one day as you'd normally get in two days, so no, you're getting neither a third head nor a superpower"), but we were still bringing water for cooking and drinking from the provided water tanks, just in case.

Re: Swallowtail Butterfly Saturday
Good morning, FFB and Trissie!
FFB, I hope you have a lovely time at your ceramics painting, and the time alone.
Trissie, we had water contamination some years ago. IIRC, we used bottled water for drinking (including cats!) water from the bowsers (which had to be boiled) for cooking, and just used the mains for laundry, showering, flushing toilets etc. And no,.nothing happened either (although I would have quite liked a super power!
)
I'm back from a very nice breakfast, and I took the longer way home along by the stream through the valley park on the sunshine. Now I'm sitting in my garden (got to put those patio chairs to good use!
) with another coffee. I'm going to spend some time working on my response to the DEFRA consultation,.before I make a start on those pansies..
