The Battle of Monte Cassino, also known as the Battle for Rome, was a series of four military assaults by the Allies against Axis forces in Italy during the Italian Campaign of World War II. The objective was to break through the Winter Line and facilitate an advance towards Rome.
In the beginning of 1944, the western half of the Winter Line was anchored by German forces holding the Rapido-Gari, Liri, and Garigliano valleys and several surrounding peaks and ridges. Together, these features formed the Gustav Line. Monte Cassino, a historic hilltop abbey founded in 529 by Benedict of Nursia, dominated the nearby town of Cassino and the entrances to the Liri and Rapido valleys. Lying in a protected historic zone, it had been left unoccupied by the Germans, although they manned some positions set into the slopes below the abbey's walls.
Repeated artillery attacks on assaulting allied troops caused their leaders to incorrectly conclude that the abbey was being used by the Germans as an observation post, at the very least. Fears escalated, along with casualties, and despite evidence, it was marked for destruction. On 15 February 1944, Allied bombers dropped 1,400 tonnes of high explosives, causing widespread damage. Fallschirmjäger forces occupied the area and established defensive positions amid the ruins.
Between 17 January and 18 May, Monte Cassino and the Gustav Line defences were attacked on four occasions by Allied troops. On 16 May, soldiers from the Polish II Corps launched one of the final assaults on the German defensive position as part of a twenty-division assault along a thirty-two-kilometre front. On 18 May, the Polish flag and the British flag were raised over the ruins. Following this Allied victory, the German Senger Line collapsed on 25 May, and the German defenders were driven from their positions. The capture of Monte Cassino resulted in 55,000 Allied casualties, with German losses estimated at around 20,000 killed and wounded. The battle has been described as a Pyrrhic victory.

On the side of the Allies, there was one unusual soldier. He came with the Polish regiment and his name was Wojtek. And he was a bear!
He was adopted as a cub by Polish soldiers in Iran and travelled with the 22nd Company to Iraq, and then through Syria, Palestine, and Egypt. Wojtek copied the other soldiers, drinking beer, smoking, and even marching alongside them on his hind legs. Wojtek had his own caregiver, assigned to look after him. The cub grew up while on campaign, and by the time of the Battle of Monte Cassino, he weighed 90 kg.
From Egypt, the Polish II Corps was reassigned to fight alongside the British Eighth Army, famous from North African battles such as El Alamein and from the Italian campaign. Regulations for the British transport ship that was to carry them to Italy forbade mascot and pet animals. To get around this restriction, Wojtek was officially drafted into the Polish Army as a private and listed among the soldiers of the 22nd Artillery Supply Company. Henryk Zacharewicz and Lew Worzowski were assigned as his caretakers.
As an enlisted soldier with his own paybook, rank, and serial number, he lived with the other men in tents or in a special wooden crate, which was transported by truck. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, Wojtek helped his unit convey ammunition by carrying 100-pound (45 kg) crates of 25-pound artillery shells, never dropping any of them. While this story generated debate over its accuracy, at least one account exists of a British soldier recalling seeing a bear carrying crates of ammunition. The bear mimicked the soldiers: when he saw the men lifting crates, he copied them. Wojtek carried boxes that normally required four men, which he would stack onto a truck or other ammunition boxes. After the Polish victory, Wojtek became a celebrity among visiting Allied generals and statesmen. This service also earned him promotion to the rank of corporal.
After the end of World War II in 1945, Wojtek was transported to Berwickshire, Scotland, with the rest of the 22nd Company. Following demobilisation on 15 November 1947, Wojtek was given to Edinburgh Zoo, where he spent the rest of his life, often visited by journalists and former Polish soldiers, some of whom tossed cigarettes for him to eat, as he did during his time in the army. He still happily responded to being spoken to in Polish, recognizing many of his former unit. Media attention contributed to Wojtek's popularity. He was a frequent guest on BBC television's Blue Peter programme for children.

Good morning Trissie and thank you for a very interesting start. I remember Wojtek on Blue Peter- obviously not live, as he was before my time, 
but recordings.
Today I've been up and at 'em as I needed to get to the health centre for my appointment. And DH had numerous questions about Freddie's appointment tomorrow, as well as things he can't find!

A remarkable story. I'll read it to HRH to break up the time at a long appt today. That takes up half my day and if I'm smart (to be determined), I'll find something to take along to get something done. Afterward, we talked about going to a plant nursery, but also should pick up a prescription in a different direction, so playing it by ear to see how we feel.

I'm up and at 'em a little late because I went to bed too late last night. Cs, M, dd30, dh, and I played a game last night after dinner. Everyone left around 9:30. (It is spring break for J12yo, so her bed time has been moved back.) After they left, dh and I cleaned up everything, and then we wrote and sent off the blurb for friend SY's 60th birthday. I really pushed for that; I didn't want it hanging over our heads tonight after the Anglican church plant BS.
Today, I have class 11-1 followed by a bi-weekly instructor meeting 1-1:40. I then need to type up a summary to be posted in the announcements tomorrow morning. Dh and I will eat separately tonight because he has a payroll meeting at 5pm and the BS starts at 6 pm on central campus. I'll eat at home early, and we'll meet at the BS. Dh may eat afterward or he might get his own dinner -- not sure. Other things to do: jog, bd card to ds, wedding gift to V and J.
It is 43F right now, and we're forecast to reach 72*F (22.2C).
It looks like we'll get a lot of rain this week, starting tomorrow.

Dh and I will eat separately tonight because he has a payroll meeting at 5pm and the BS starts at 6 pm on central campus. I'll eat at home early, and we'll meet at the BS. Dh may eat afterward or he might get his own dinner -- not sure. Other things to do: jog, bd card to ds, wedding gift to V and J.
