Re: Battle of Waterloo Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
The Battle of Waterloo was fought on Sunday 18 June 1815, near Waterloo (then in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, now in Belgium), marking the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The French Imperial Army under the command of Napoleon I was defeated by two armies of the Seventh Coalition. One was a British-led force with units from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Hanover, Brunswick, and Nassau, under the command of field marshal Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington. The other comprised three corps of the Prussian army under Field Marshal Blücher. The battle was known contemporaneously as the Battle of Mont Saint-Jean in France (after the hamlet of Mont-Saint-Jean) and La Belle Alliance in Prussia ("the Beautiful Alliance"; after the inn of La Belle Alliance).
Upon Napoleon's return to power in March 1815, the beginning of the Hundred Days, many states that had previously opposed him formed the Seventh Coalition to oppose him again, and hurriedly mobilised their armies. Wellington's and Blücher's armies were cantoned close to the northeastern border of France. Napoleon planned to attack them separately, before they could link up and invade France with other members of the coalition. On 16 June, Napoleon successfully attacked the bulk of the Prussian Army at the Battle of Ligny with his main force, while a small portion of the French Imperial Army contested the Battle of Quatre Bras to prevent the Anglo-allied army from reinforcing the Prussians. The Anglo-allied army held their ground at Quatre Bras but were prevented from reinforcing the Prussians, and on the 17th, the Prussians withdrew from Ligny in good order, while Wellington then withdrew in parallel with the Prussians northward to Waterloo on 17 June. Napoleon sent a third of his forces to pursue the Prussians, which resulted in the separate Battle of Wavre with the Prussian rear-guard on 18–19 June and prevented that French force from participating at Waterloo.
Upon learning that the Prussian Army was able to support him, Wellington decided to offer battle on the Mont-Saint-Jean escarpment across the Brussels Road, near the village of Waterloo. Here he withstood repeated attacks by the French throughout the afternoon of 18 June,[20] and was eventually aided by the progressively arriving 50,000 Prussians who attacked the French flank and inflicted heavy casualties. In the evening, Napoleon assaulted the Anglo-allied line with his last reserves, the senior infantry battalions of the Imperial Guard. With the Prussians breaking through on the French right flank, the Anglo-allied army repulsed the Imperial Guard, and the French army was routed.
Waterloo was the decisive engagement of the Waterloo campaign and Napoleon's last. It was the second-bloodiest single day battle of the Napoleonic Wars, after Borodino. According to Wellington, the battle was "the nearest-run thing you ever saw in your life". Napoleon abdicated four days later, and coalition forces entered Paris on 7 July. The defeat at Waterloo marked the end of Napoleon's Hundred Days return from exile. It precipitated Napoleon's second and definitive abdication as Emperor of the French, and ended the First French Empire. It set a historical milestone between serial European wars and decades of relative peace, often referred to as the Pax Britannica. In popular culture, the phrase "meeting one's Waterloo" has become an expression for experiencing a catastrophic reversal or undoing.

Re: Battle of Waterloo Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Fun tidbit of information:
Wellington really did invent the “welly”!
So did Wellington really invent the famous boots that now carry his name? Well, yes. Though not until after the battle. It seems that, in 1817, he instructed his shoemaker to modify the Hessian boots he’d worn at Waterloo, making them more hard-wearing yet comfortable for evening wear. They remained a popular and fashionable footwear for the next 40 years. But, in 1852, Hiram Hutchinson opened a rubber boot company using the new vulcanization process invented by Charles Goodyear. He used a similar style for these rubber boots to the one first designed by Wellington – and they’ve been “wellies” ever since. But the rank-and-file soldiers didn’t enjoy quite the same elegance. By the time the French battalions reached the Waterloo battlefield, they’d been marching for many hours through torrential rain and a quagmire of mud. Many of them had lost their boots, though they carried spares. Or rather, one spare. Left or right? In practice, it was no real problem since, until much later in the century, boots and shoes were straight-cut, no left or right, and came in only three sizes – small, medium or large.

Re: Battle of Waterloo Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Good morning, Trissie, and thank you for starting us off.
Thoughts about Waterloo, there is the 1970 film starring Christopher Plummer entitled Waterloo which is entertaining viewing. And, if course the ABBA song, "At Waterloo Napoleon did surrender..." And.now.Ive probably given everyone and earworm for the day!
You were right, and I had the second MMR jab (measles, mumps, rubella) on Monday. It's triggered my eczema again, but not as badly as last time. (According to the NHS website, it doesn't do this, but the Pierre Fabre eczema foundation, and my body, beg to differ. ) Fortunately this time I'm already armed with the. Betnovate! (I don't like using strong steroids,.but sometimes.needs must).
Sleep well, Dogged!
Bama, pro tips for getting a cat into a carrier:
1) before you start, corral the cat in a space with no hidey holes *before* you get the carrier out. Their hearing.is more.acite.than ours and the slightest rustle/chink of the carrier may send them hiding. Also ensure you're wearing shoes (you'll see.wjy at the end!)
2) use a top loader -this way the gap is bigger and you have gravity on your side (what happens at the vet when they need to get the cat out of the carrier is not your problem ... and they should have gauntlets!)
3)Pick up cat (easier said than done, I know!), and point him / her head down towards the carrier. Where the head goes, the rest follows!
4) Secure carrier lid - you may need to rest your foot gently on top while to do this, to prevent them lifting the lid a d escaping (this is why you need shoes!
)
5)Good luck!
Yesterday, Freddie had.fouir teeth out.
. One was a surgical.extraction, as the root was deep, so he has (dissolvable) stitches.
Apparently as soon as he came round,.he started hissing and swearing .at the staff,.so they knew he was on the road to recovery. The nurse apologised.for.only being able.to monitor him remotely, and also not offering him any food (the last time someone tried this, he attacked them!) Matilda cried the whole time Freddie was gone, and they did have a touching reunion rubbing noses.
She is also jealous of the attention.Fred.is getting, and acting up,.and today we had another early start. She is now completely ignoring me!
Today I'm meeting DF PL for coffee at the community.shop, so long as Freddie is still ok. I also need to ring the vet about an admin matter and some test results. His bloods were fine, but they've sent the cystocentesis off to the lab, so that might be a day or so.
Handyman MJ has asked to come.on Good Friday to look at the patio door - I've said yes (he's been on holiday, and is still catching up.from that. I can.still.go.to.tje.meditation at church.in the afternoon). At least if he comes then,.we can start to get things moving.
I also need to remind DH he was going to drop at card in and DF RB's house - it's his birthday today.
I also need to think of a tactful way to suggest to the nurse tomorrow that if she really thinks.more antibiotics are necessary.foe this bite, (I'm holding out ATM as it doesn't look infected to me!) then it would be a good idea to swab it and send to the lab for a culture so we know exactly what were dealing with,.and,.if necessary,.I can be given the most suitable.narrow spectrum antibiotic, rather than a broad spectrum."one size fits all".. As Freddie had dental issues, my theory is that there were different.straims of bacteria present as.well as the usual ones in a cat's mouth,.so the lab needs to test for anaerobic bacteria as well as the usual suspects. I don't want her to think I'm telling her how to do her job (I'm not, of course!) but I think it's too much of a.coincidence that this is the first time I've had problems with one of Freddie's bites, and it's also the first time he's had dental issues. Sorry if TMI! I probably need to write it all down and practise before tomorrow.

Re: Battle of Waterloo Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
Back from a very nice coffee and chocolate brownie with DF PL at the community shop.
Freddie has had his walk and another snack. He's on wet food ATM while his mouth heals, and he's decided he wants to be fed "on demand".
Everyone is happy and quiet, (Matilda is on my lap), so now is probably a good time to ring the vet!

Re: Battle of Waterloo Wednesday @ TDD - C&C
That seems like a logical conclusion to me, Kitty. Or at least one to check out. Four teeth out - wow! Glad you could enjoy coffee out with a friend.
Thanks for the history reminder, trissie. And interesting to read about Duke Wellington and Wellies! Though I live on this side of the pond, I do know what they are.
It's a quiet morning here today. Maybe everyone is off being productive. It's almost 8 am here and kind of gray and dreary looking outside. We're forecast to get rain this afternoon with a high of 41F. It's 38F (3.3C) right now.
Last night, AA and M left around 9:30 pm. I was too tired by that time to do anything productive. Before they arrived, I did spiff the bathroom and tidy the living areas beforehand. I also helped dh cook.
Today, I have payroll: prep this morning, teach 11-1, CA meeting with AC (online) 2:30 - 3:30, and an EPT interview 4:40 - 5:10ish. Between those meetings, I'd like to get some fresh produce from WF, finish GGT emails (also payroll), maybe finally get clean sheets on our bed. Maybe I could go for another short jog? (I jogged yesterday.) Or a walk? Dinner tonight: tacos!
I'm very happy to NOT have any events (to go to or to host) this evening. We just had 3 booked evenings in a row: hosting Sunday dinner until 9ish, BS Monday night (home at 8:15), and dinner guests last night until 9:30. The week before last: we had 7 evenings in a row of commitments. Then, last week, we only had 2 evening commitments: hosting Tuesday dinner and Sunday dinner. This week, if we go to a Maundy Thursday service, it's looking like 6 evening commitments with tonight being the only open evening. --I'd like a little cheese with my whine.

- new phone eventually
