Re: Battle of Thermopylae Thursday @ TDD - C&C
The Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) was a pivotal confrontation during the Second Persian Invasion of Greece. A vastly outnumbered Greek force, led by King Leonidas I of Sparta, positioned themselves at the narrow pass of Thermopylae to block the advancing Persian army under King Xerxes I. For two days, the Greek phalanx formation used the cramped terrain to neutralize the Persians' numerical superiority, successfully repelling waves of infantry and the elite "Immortals."
The tide turned on the third day when a local Greek named Ephialtes betrayed his countrymen by showing the Persians a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Realizing they were being outflanked, Leonidas dismissed the bulk of the Greek army to save them for future battles. He remained at the pass with a rearguard of 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians, and 400 Thebans, choosing to fight to the death to cover the retreat and fulfill Spartan law, which forbade surrender.
While the Persians eventually won the battle and cleared the path to Athens, the Greek stand became a powerful symbol of heroic sacrifice. The delay bought the Greek city-states critical time to organize their navy, leading to a decisive victory at the Battle of Salamis later that year. Today, the battle is remembered as one of history's most famous examples of a brave "last stand" against impossible odds.

Fun tidbit of information:
Just before the battle, when a scout told the Spartan soldier Dienekes that the Persian archers were so numerous their arrows would "block out the sun," he reportedly replied: "Good, then we shall fight in the shade."
And I think this badass comment counts as a SHEM too!

◕‿◕ * * * Good Morning! * * * ◕‿◕
trissie, thanks for another very interesting start. I remember learning about that battle in high school. Then watching the movie, was it 15 years ago ? Hearing about Leonidas always makes me think about the brand of Belgian chocolates...
So glad you have an extra long weekend !
kittykatt, wishing you a good time at church. I hope the nurse is understanding about your health needs and I hope you feel serene explaning your needs.
I loved the Mark Twain quotes yesterday !
I'm home this morning, having an appt at hospital for my abscess at 2pm I decided not to spend the morning at payroll. I hope the Dr gives me a medical leave paper (name? sick note ?) to email to work, or else I will "lose" a day off from my yearly count of days off, and there are not many of them.
I'll use two hours of my morning to do some more cleaning, as DUncle S-- arrives tomorrow to spend the night, and the house is not excatly company-ready yet - but way better than it was.
Also glad to be able to walk the boys to school at the right time with the school gate open, instead of leaving them in front of the closed gate in the cold and dark 15 minutes early. No maternal guilt.
TADAs
morning rush, but easier than usual
walked kids to school and saw them through the school gate
emailed boss I wouldn't be at payroll today
TODOs
maybe 2 hours of cleaning - be easy on myself
make small list of things to buy, I still need two Easter chocolate items for the Sunday hunt
be at 2pm at hospital appt
hopefull manage to get a medical sick note

Re: Battle of Thermopylae Thursday @ TDD - C&C
No Easter break for your kids, Frenchie? Hoping the dr apt will take care of the absces, they can be both painful and dangerous. The movie must have been at least 15 years ago, as I remember seeing it at the movie theatre and we haven't done much movie going after the kids were born
kittykatt, I was thinking - if there's possibility of multi-bacterial infection of that bite you have, wouldn't wide spectrum antibiotics actually make more sense? You know, to cover all bases?
gma, hoping you will feel better and better!
Home from dropping of DBD at the train station. DS refused to go to the scout trip. He's almost 15, and he never liked the multi-day trips (he just likes his bed and his creature comforts and of course these days his computer and the wifi), so I didn't really pressure him. After all, we still have the twins at home, so no real respite from the kids! It was nice while it lasted but it's over, I guess.
I'm working from home, a quiet day with no real looming deadlines, just catching up on things. I desperately need days like these to tie all loose ends and get going on long term projects!
On home front, I need to get groceries, get the downstairs clean, and it would be lovely if we could go to the movies - the twins are old enough to be home for a couple hours and we're thinking that Project Hail Mary could be something that DS would enjoy too (it does kinda change the date night dynamics, but...

Re: Battle of Thermopylae Thursday @ TDD - C&C
trissie we have Easter Monday off. Then there is Spring break, at the end of next week, for 2 weeks. MrNG will be home most days then, and I will try and take 3 days off work. Just googled the movie, it must be an interesting one, even if you're not on a "date".
Alone at home while kids are at school - it brings back confused feelings of guilt, sadness, and questions about the meaning of life. Yes, I'm the kind of person who can't just enjoy quiet time on a sunny Spring day without wondering what is wrong.
TADAs
did an hour of cleaning, maybe more
relaxed a bit
leftover soup with cheese for lunch
TODOs
be at 2pm at hospital appt
hopefull manage to get a medical sick note
drive back, quick shopping trip
dinner prep and homework
shower + clean some more in the shower
last-minute cleaning before bed ?
