In 2009, The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services convened a task force to review, and commissioned research to develop computer-simulated models comparing the expected outcomes under different screening scenarios.
Here they are, based on all that work:
Routine screening of average-risk women should begin at age 50, instead of age 40.
Routine screening should end at age 74.
Women 50 to 74 should get screening mammograms every two years instead of every year.
Women with risk factors should discuss personal schedules with their doctors.
Lumps should always be reported, although breast self-exams have little value, based on findings from several large studies.
The World Health Organization already had approximately these same guidelines.
The American Academy of Family Physicians adopted these guidelines shortly after they came out.
The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology has not adopted them.
The American Cancer Society did not change their guidelines and still says every year from 40 to 80.
Insurance companies didn't change their coverage of any doctor-referred mammogram.
Finishing lunch and peeking in. You all are reminding me that I really should schedule a check up this summer. It's been a long time since I've been to the dr.
((Lilac)) Prayers said. I imagine everyone is a little on edge.
I've been going from one thing to another all day. This will continue until after payroll.
- morning stuff done: s2s, self-care, check emails and web sites, respond to one email, gather things
- left house late at 8:30
- Trade Joes for coffee for moms group
- moms group: unloaded flower baskets for small group leaders + 3 of the child care staff, made coffee (dfriend had already set up), did upfront end of the year thank yous to all the leaders, participated in the rest of the meeting, helped get all the thank you cards to the child care staff signed and prepped - and to them, subbed in T2 class at the very end b/c one of the staff needed to leave early, did clean up, finally left at 12:15 and got home at 12:30.
- lunch
- small group email reminder sent
Next:
- prep for class
- leave at 2:00 to walk or stroll quickly to work. It is a beautiful day here! Sunny and not too hot.
- payroll
- home around 6/6:10 pm
- dinner: leftovers
- clean up
- family discussion re: Iceland options. Dd19 is doing some research on that right now.
Dd came and we visited. Then we walked her to the bus and walked down to the bagel shop for lunch. I continued on to the autoclub office and picked up maps and tour book for Newfoundland.
Walked back but it was much farther than I anticipated. Probably ended up walking over 3 miles and I'm exhausted and sore.
Posted my previous post while I was icing my knees.
Had the phone by me and called the nearest x-ray place. They closed at 4 but I had to sign in by 3:30. It was 3:20. I asked if they were busy and she said no-one was there. So I said "would you consider this my sign in and I'll be there in about 10 minutes?" She said as long as I got there by 3:45, I could have the x-rays done today. So I took off. Was back in my chair at home by 4:05. Cost me $2.50 in parking because I had to drive, not bike, but that task is done.
Once back in my chair I phoned the two local physio therapy places. The first couldn't see me until Wednesday, the second had a cancellation for tomorrow night at supper time (tomorrow is Friday before a long weekend here) so I have an appointment for my consultation.
The place I'm booked at is the closer of the two and a slightly better bike ride. Neither place has parking so I'll be walking or biking there.
So I'm feeling rather virtuous now, working hard on my Freedom 55 goal to become pain free.
Bleah! Just overwrote some code changes and had to redo them. Fortunately, the hard work of actually figuring out what the code changes should be was already done. Over lunch, I looked into Colorado Springs and Cimarron, NM as places to stay on the way to Denver. Lots of fun stuff both places. Need to find out from DD13 what she wants to do. Cave of the Winds has a couple of thrill rides that I would like to skip in favor of saving money. Especially since we will have 2 days at Elitch Gardens! She will probably want to do them. Maybe I should have her bring her own money for those! She will want to do the ghost tour in Cimarron and stay in the haunted hotel. Not sure how cost effective the hotel would be. I also need to find out how close these places are to the halfway point of our trip.
You, my dear friends, are some mighty powerful prayer warriors. Dh texted me at 2:21 that he was checked in at the drs. office. His appt was at 3:30. I was mowing and when I came in, he had texted at 3:04 that he was out of there. I called him and he said that they thought everything looked great. What everyone was thinking was infection is scar tissue. Anyway he is headed home. He may stay 2 1/2 hours from here if it is dark when he gets there. Otherwise he will head on home. He said he is so relieved to know that all that he is dealing with is scar tissue and normal.
The upstairs is clean and the yard mowed. Today is dd2s birthday. She will be busy tonight preparing for the party tomorrow night. I told her I would come and be her kitchen clean up person.
Better go. I might hose off the entry way area. Then I need to shower.
I took care of texting some info. off.
Defuzzed my legs getting a razor rash from that and had a challenge finding lotion that did not sting my sensitive skin.
My roast beef toe is purple I think I broke a blood a blood vessle stomping my foot to scare off a dog that thinks he owns the street on my walking route. Had the toddlerN and stroller not my walking stick. We have a leash law and these people do not use one and do not have a fence last year & one dog got ran over and died.
The weather is excellent today.
Summer work schedule is starting and construction zone are going up more on the roads even more so.
Good day at the local festival but oh my... A day outdoors in spring brings a night of allergy meds, eyedrops, and sniffles. I am really miserable right now and there are two more days to go!
Tidied up the dinner dishes, did the weekly kitchen chores, watered the plants, put out fresh towels, did a load of fine washables, took the garbage and recycle to the garbage room, started the dishwasher and the load of towels and have hung up the fine washables to dry. Also put the new stake in Pierre (our ficus) to encourage him to grow larger. It is about 6" too high.
My knee is sore again. But then again, I'm over 11K steps for the day so that's pretty much expected.
Work was good, but it feels like I've added more than 2 hours to the schedule -- probably because I don't get any kind of break. I took an energy bar to nibble between customers and that helped, but it isn't the same as sitting down for a meal. The bar was also rather dry, even though I drank a large glass of water with it.
I'm going to have to think about how to space out my meals better on days when I work the evening shift.
DH just informed me that he stopped on his way home to buy a new folding saw, and they made him show his ID so they could enter his birthdate in the register to prove he's over 18. Seriously?! Really, almost any tool can be used as a weapon, does that mean I'll have to show my driver's license to buy a hammer or screwdriver? What about a broom or mop, they could do some damage, right? These modern rules are weird.
