Harriet, could you use the planter your DGD made you for artificial flowers, if the edge is too harsh for real plants to cope with? That way she would see you were using it and enjoying it. Or maybe repurpose it -would it hold some sewing supplies perhaps? That way you would have it on your table, and would see it whenever you were sewing.
