Hmmm... so I have two votes for the swing and two votes for the monitor.
Anyone else have an opinion?

Re: Indiana's reasons for the monitor... well, they never sit outside, as far as I can tell, only go out to walk the dog, and they would not do that and leave baby in house alone, anyway. When they are not at home, they are at her parents, and I think they'd all be in the same room there, too. Watching tv, doing laundry -- yes -- those are dh's reasons for getting the monitor, but I still think, how hard can it be to hear a baby in the very next room. Seriously. The only thing that separates the living room from the bedroom is a closet. From the couch to the bedroom door, it is probably 6-8 feet. Y'all just can't believe how tiny this house is... but remember, it was built for a widow who was living on Social Security.

Re: my reasons for the monitor... I'm thinking... oh my, what if I let ds/ddil talk me OUT of the monitor (I have to make the purchase for dmil) and then, Heaven forbid something DID happen to the baby that a monitor could have prevented.
Ddil said I was reading those reviews on Walmart.com and "freaking yourself out."

I don't think we'll go so far as to get one with the camera on it.

I had allergy doctor appt tomorrow morning, but allergy doctor's nurse called and said he was sick... so now I guess I can get an earlier start to the car doctor.

Ditto Sher's advice to Harmony:

You could start now planning something big and special for your 20th next year. And it wouldn't include 35 teenagers, in my humble opinion. LOL

I like the hockey sticks, too. We don't really HAVE to find out all the words we are & aren't allowed to say, do we?
It isn't like I've been having an uncontrollable urge to cuss here in the village....

DH & I usually leave notes on a dry-erase board that someone gave us one year for Christmas.
DH used to say my notes to ds were always too long. (Imagine that! Me? Long notes?)

WTG on the cleaning, Harriet & dstepdil!!! BIG WTG!!! Oh my, how I wish y'all could send some of your energy & motivation over here!!!

Indiana, we were watching the Cubs game this afternoon, and they were talking about the sudden change in temperatures! Doesn't sound much like summer, does it? Of course, it's kinda normal for Cubs games to be chilly, isn't it? DH says it's the wind off the lake.
When ds was little we went to Wrigley Field and (the old) Comiskey (sp?) park one summer. We really enjoyed that trip.

Oh my... now I've read far enough to see where "monitors are not without problems... make sure the cord is not within 3 feet of the baby... be sure the signal is secure; people often pick up neighbors on their monitors..."
* sigh * Maybe ds is right; they can survive without one.

Oh, we never had a johny jump up, but they always looked like so much darn fun for the baby!!

I've been working on getting dd14 registered for a field hockey weekly training session this summer. Had to first renew her membership in the national organization. I've also emailed ddad about photos for the anniversary party.

I keep adding to my li&t. I've let too many things slide for too long. . . . Ack!

Garbage and recycling is gathered and at the curb, thanks mostly to dkids and dh.

Kids are in bed. I'm following suit.

Well, thank you everybody. I was mad about the youth group here tonight when I first heard about it, but then I thought, we hardly ever go out anyway, and might not even on the date. But I guess I began to churn inside over it all... DYouth Paster tonight said if he'd known when they scheduled it he would have rescheduled. I did have to tell DH to quit teasing me about the present for the 19th year being fire.

We will be tied up this weekend, but next should be easier. Maybe we can go out, I still have another gift card to a restaurant.

Everyone went home around 10. Sometimes these things go on till 11 or later. I quietly started bringing stuff in and doing dishes about 9:30 so got most cleaned up earlier than usual. We all agreed it is getting too hot for this, and with rainy season coming, we won't do any more of this till Fall. It's a lot of work. It's always fun, but I won't miss it for a few months, that's for sure.

Oh, I vote for the monitor too. DD2 used hers all the time, even still brings it when she comes here. Her "baby" is 1 1/2 yrs! Her kids didn't use the swing very much, but DD2 used hers constantly with her kids. It was the only way she could get a couple of them to go to sleep. Remember, with the monitor, if they bring baby to your bigger house, it would come in handy there too. None of ours were cameras, just sound.Oh, the Johnny Jumpup was the only way DD1 could get a shower, by using it in the doorway of bathroom. Consider, though, the doorways have to have trim framing. Frameless doors have nowhere to hook the jumpup onto.

Lucy, I wouldn't have minded using either a monitor or swing --- didn't have either for any of my boys. First house we lived in was two story w/bedrooms on 2nd fl. Second house had one floor, but a long hallway to bedrooms, so a monitor would have been useful. What I did use a lot was a playpen. We had a regular large size for 2 older boys and a porta-crib for last one. Dkids didn't mind being in for a little while so I could do what I needed to without worrying what they were doing. The porta-crib was nice 'cause we could fold it up and take in the car when visiting someone.

Happy anniversary to Mr & Mrs Harmony.

I have finally been able to relax this evening.

Finished getting the sewing newsletter ready and took it to the post office late this afternoon. I didn't make it to the P.O. yesterday for stamps so had to buy them today and afix them while standing there at a side counter. IMHO, self-adhesive stamps are one of the greatest inventions of all time.

Then I had to do something about the flat tire. The little garage that DH likes apparently does not have a tire machine. They said the only place in Tiny Town that does anything with tires is the new car dealership.

Well ... they were able to repair the tire -- as far as I know, though I won't be confident until I see if it holds air over the next few days. On the positive side, they didn't try to claim that it couldn't be fixed so they could try to sell me new tires.

However, although they said they could work on it immediately, it took 1 1/2 hours, leaving me in a little waiting room with no air conditioning, no communication, and no way to see if they were even working on my car. The only reason I tolerated it so long was because I had a good book in my purse. The cost for the repair was reasonable.

Then I found out part of the long wait was they were doing an "inspection" which must be general policy because I certainly had not requested one. Nothing on the list the guy told me was urgent. It was already after 5 and I needed to get supper started cooking, so I didn't pay a lot of attention because I thought they would give me the written list.

When I got out to the car, I found that they'd put a few miles on the car in a test drive. They had rummaged around in the glove box (maybe looking for the manual?) which I deduced because they took stuff out and left it on the floor. Then I took another look at the paper he handed me after I paid, which I assumed was the inspection list. Nope, it was just a receipt for what I paid. With my name spelled incorrectly.

So I'm not really inclined to go back there. I'll call the place I usually go in The Big City and make appointments for a full inspection and repairs. I think I have a coupon from them, too.

Re: teenagers, attitude & language, one of the things I really enjoyed about the video Harriet posted awhile ago from Charlieissocoollike is that Charlie appears to be a very upbeat and positive young man. Contrasted to many current music videos where all of the young men seem so angry and violent. I watched several of Charlie's. Even on the rare occasions when he's complaining, he's being polite and funny. Very charming!
