I just got home from my dentist appointment (and a nice long walk around the mall). Freezing is still coming out. I only have one appointment left and I'll be all caught up with my dental needs. I had ignored my dentist for over 5 years other than emergencies.

Mike is now out the door to go deal with something he has to do.

Dd has called me to arrange the car handover tomorrow. She needs the car, but doesn't want to travel out of the city to pick it up. I don't want to drive to her place, but I will go to Yorkdale mall. We are meeting in the food court between 10 and 11. As in "text me when you get to the food court." I will buy her lunch and then take the bus home and relax and read a book.

The biggest suitcase weighs 48 pounds! The other 3 are waiting for stuff to go in. Saturday is fast approaching and then I will be gone for 3 weeks.

Yes, I agree that some fairy tales are dark.

Well... not nearly as much accomplished as I intended so far. Got sucked into the internet for waaaay longer than I intended... BUT...

(Times have not been announced. I did not want to be gone the first part of May, which was dh's first choice, I think. That would have put us away from home on the anniversary of ddad's death, and I just had a nagging feeling that I should be here for dmom at that time. DH probably thinks that's silly. DH -- and I -- are nervous about making plans like that anyway, b/c of fears that our schedule will conflict w/ds's and then ddil will be in a mess for babysitter... but you can't just drive into Atlanta on game day and get the hotel that is closest to the ballpark, you know. )

I read the classic fairy tales too - and then took a class on children's lit at the Uni and learned even more about them! I have collections - the standard ones we think of, mainly Perrault (French) from 1600s and Grimm Brothers who collected them in the 1800s??. Then, there is Hans Christian Andersen's - The Ugly Duckling, The Matchstick Girl, The Little Mermaid, and others. I think many, but not all, of the classics end with the good guys winning, though some pretty gruesome things happen in between. I've even heard that Grimms' fairy tales were originally not intended for children at all but were moralistic stories for adults. I believe Little Red Riding Hood originally did not have a happy ending, and yes, the Matchstick Girl is also a bit dark for small children (Imho) and Andersen's The Little Mermaid also has a rather unsatisfying ending where she ends up as sea foam on the ocean - not the Disney happy version at all!! I think that is why I tend to like Perrault's the most; I think they tend to be less gruesome? Maybe also b/c they also might include some romance - Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast. Snow White was Grimm Bros, though. Grimm Bros. did collect some of Perrault's too -- but Perrault was writing them down 200 years before they were collecting them. Perrault's were based on older versions, from Medieval times or maybe earlier?? I don't know that much about them. I don't know why I liked them so much as a kid. Maybe the darkness and magical events fascinated me. I also really like fantasy and sci fi, and movies/stories where everything is happy and neatly tied up together at the end can irritate me. .. . .though, too many French movies can be frustrating the other direction, iykwim. LOL! I've learned Flannery O'Connor was obsessed with fairy tales as a child, so that made me feel better. Her stories are also dark -- but on the surface. You can't read her stories literally; you have to be willing to dig deep to get to her symbolism and metaphors, which are amazingly rich and often theological!

--Well, I got carried away. . . I also have collections of fairy tales from some other countries, a book of Maori fairy tales from the time we lived in NZ on sabbatical (1970s), a book of Swedish fairy tales from my grandmother, whose background was Swedish. Maybe some others, I can't remember.

I'm (finally) home from temple. Left word that I want to come back tonight for the program, but might not because I've been there so much this week.

The sofer and the process was fascinating. He could tell us an approximate age and location of origin for each Torah we have, and gave me an "off the record" approximate valuation for each of the four Torahs. We'll get a written report next week. We've had the four Torahs insured for $5K each since the 1990s and it turns out their value is probably six or seven times that. And the Torah in our display case, which isn't insured at all could be worth $40K so we will get it appraised at a later date. He completely unrolled each torah and pointed out flaws, items needing attention, previous repairs and where a parchment was replaced within the roll. We found bandaids on two of our scrolls being used to reinforce joining sections where stitches were loose - he indicated that was a first for him. (Yikes, who would have done that?) Anyway, it was all quite interesting.

I think it was Lilac who asked - I will be done next April 30 as temple president. I'll continue on Exec committee for two years, but it won't be like it is now.

Trying to decide what to do next. A nap break might be in order.

Progress has been made - I have an appointment on Tuesday a.m. to see a specialist about my teeth grinding. Earlier this week I talked to a congregant who is a retired dentist, and this was who he suggested.

progress house nothing: dinner and meals for d family members outside my home: coming along.
I am trying to make things ahead of time so my main clean up is not in the evening. I have German Christmas music... the old songs with the bells at the beginning. no I am not German but I my mother had an album when I was young that started out with church bells ringing and this matches it.
I am still looking for classic french Christmas Albums.

Hello Dear Ladies,

Another cold, sunny but windy day here. Wood fire is going.

Cooked lunch and dishes are done.

Swept and mopped the kitchen and entryway. Mixing things up a bit this week.

Made an appointment with Doctor about my shoulder. It doesn't seem to get better and at times it is so bad, I can hardly stand it. Good to find out just what it is.

Good afternoon all...

Fairy tales...I liked all the classic tales I read while growing up. I had a book of Grimm's Fairy Tales and read it many times. Have also read some that are not well known.

OKay...Thinking good thoughts re: yesterday's good news. Hoping LO's sore throat is better.

Well, our little dinner party last night did not happen. We had meal ready by 5 pm and by 6 pm dcousin still had not arrived. I was worried that she or her dh might have gotten sick or been in a car accident on the way and not been able to let us know. So I called her --- boy was she embarrassed that she had forgotten they were to come! Turns our their a/c has been out from last Fri and they went out most of the day to stay in mall where it was cool, so was so distracted she didn't even think about dinner with us. I told her no worries, just come today. Told her it would be "left overs". (Dinner was ham, sweet potatoes, mixed vegetables and salad, all just as good the second time around!)

Talked to ds#3 last evening to wish him happy birthday.

I've had an easy day so far with just normal daily routine to do. Also wrote a few checks for bills due and put them out in mailbox. Our mail wasn't delivered yesterday until after 5 pm - and it was all ads and junk mail, so not even worth walking out there for.

Think I'll go set the table and make sure sink and counters are clean.
